When I went to see Titanic the girl behind me nearly killed her boyfriend when he said "I hear the scene of the ship sinking is a whole hour long!" before the movie started. Her response, after hitting him really hard was "DAMMIT you ruined the movie for me! I didnt know it sinks!".
Then entire section of the theater around her started bawling from laughter and she was quite embarrased. I dont know if she ever figured out that one would presumably have known about the sinking thing many years before...like when one is in 2nd grade. It was worth watching that entire awful movie just to have seen that:D
I really do think "greed" is too strong of a word to use here. I wouldnt call the desire to make money "greed". And there are plenty of easier ways to get money, even if you are a wealthy investor.
I am just trying to say that I believe these guys arent trying to do this because they see $ signs in their eyes. Its a motivatinig factor obviously, but there has to be more to it. ROI for this venture wont be in the black for a very long time. There needs to be other motivations.
But yes, it would NEVER happen unless somehow, somewhere down the line there was a potential for a return on investment.
IIRC, there really is a church of the Jedi...Inspired of course by Star Wars...
I havent heard anything about it in many years though. I think they might have given up when none of them were able to move objects around the room at will, or make people say funny stuff at the wave of a hand...
I work at a large Lockheed plant as well and nothing built/designed here resembles anything like a weapon.
As the parent says, the majority of what we build doesnt kill people (I did say majority...yes we build some weapons, but its in fact not the company's focus). Anybody that honestly believes so is delusional (like those nutjob protestors that come out once/month to walk around the building with signs that say "Lockheed is killing your baby!")
Only problem with this is that now you dont have the memory of the experience so you wouldnt know what it was like. However you probabl;y do that the "thought pattern" in your mind that would lead you to ask this question, and thus repeat your actions.:)
But the video of the chat could easily have been fabricated. How do we really know that "horneyd00d24" is really the guy you are after and not a cop on a computer in the other room, posing as horneyd00d24, just so they have some "evidence"?
Not saying that sort of thing would happen, but its enough that a defense lawyer can say to the jury that there isnt a way to prove the authenticity of the evidence...
Yup, I am, for now, planning on just sticking through my lame job because my life otherwise is quite good. Maybe later on I will feel the need to change that too, but for now I am confortable, despite my lack of interest in the job.
I only call myself a "Software Engineer" because there is a distinction made here. We also have people with the title of "Software Developer" Those people do nothing but code...they are the code monkeys. Software Engineers here spend more time designing the software some system will run. As I said in a previous post, I spend only about 3 months/year coding. The rest is system design. Some projects which are entierly software based will have Engineers AND Developers. The project I am working on doesnt need that, and we just have the Engineers.
She doesnt require money in the traditional sense. I just find myself spending alot of money on things we do together. I am marrying her this summer and couldnt be happier. Its not often you encounter someone who is willing to marry you AND shares your love of racing, music and martial arts;)
Fortunatly (or unfortunatly?) my job has no chance of being exported since it has to do with, well, national security issues. The stuff I am developing is "interesting" on its own, but its nowhere near the cutting edge stuff I saw in the university setting.
I still do design and engineering work more than programming (we spend 3 months programming and 9 months designing in a year sometimes).
Actually its not my "stuff" that I need money for. Its a trade off for me. I can be unhappy (well, not quite unhappy, just bored senseless) at work, and very much enjoy the rest of my time. I use my money to do things I enjoy. I have plenty of hobbies and a female that require money. Between an obsession with high end audio, sports cars/weekend racing, photography, jujitsu, and a female, I come out flat broke at the end of each month;)
Or I could get a lower paying job, enjoy it more, but then not be able to enjoy my hobbies (I would still need money for the female). So at the moment this seems like a decent situation. Though the thought of getting back into a research environment has crossed my mind MANY times.
I used to be a big "geek". Was always interested in the latest processor, RAM technology, etc. Now, I couldnt give a shit.
I am a software engineer. My job is boring. I spend 8-10 hours/day staring at a computer screen. A friend asked me to help him buy a computer a while back. He asked me since I was a software guy, and was supposed to know about these things. I couldnt help him. I knew NOTHING about current computers, printers, monitors etc on the market.
So now I sit here coding in C++ and making pretty UML diagrams all day, but have absolutly no interest in it anymore. I do it because it pays well and I am reasonably good at it. I dont do it because I enjoy it. I would love to quit and do something I enjoy, but then I realize that I wouldnt have as much disposable cash for other things. So I am resigning myself to wasting 40+ hours/week of my life so I can enjoy the remaining 80 or so hours (sleep is important).
When I was in school I went to a research oriented university. There was some cutting edge stuff being developed that never ceased to hold my attention. Now I am designing software for systems that are nowhere near the level of sophistication as what I was used to at school. Its just all so bland now.
Regardless, hopefully if we were to revive some sort of aincient virus it wont be able to infect us. SInce it would likely have evolved long before humans, it might not know what to do with us.
A bacterium on the other hand very well might cause issues. Since bacteria dont normally try and make you sick. They just try and live their lives and sometimes happen to release toxins into you. SO aincient bacteria could very well cause us troubles (but its not really their fault).
Every living thing that we have discovered on thsi planet so far has DNA. Everything. "Modern" (Eukaryotic) multi-celled and many single eleed organisms keep their DNA in the cell nuclei. Most bacteria (but not all) are of the "non-modern" (Prokaryotic) type. Their DNA just floats around in their cells. However they ALL have DNA.
Even viruses, which are debatable as to their status as organisms keep DNA around (though a few are RNA based and known as retro viruses. HIV is an example)
Not to make this a religeous debate or anything, but isnt this why birth control, masturbation, etc are considered a sin to the Catholics? Since sperm are considered seeds of life, wasting them would be a sin.
(this doesnt say anything about the millions of sperm that never get to the egg, despite being used 'properly')
I refuse to give any money to comcast. Thier rates are way too high and I wont pay them. So I dont get cable TV. I dont need it really. I have DSL for my internet. Not to mention I did try setting up cable internet, but the Comcast folks were downright rude on the phone to me, not to mention blithering idiots. Earthlink was much nicer. The nicer company gets my money.
Maybe he doesnt realize that the CGI Slug looks like ass. Maybe he doesnt realize all that digital garbage in EP 1/2 looks like ass. Maybe he thinks that shit looks *GOOD*.
Its sad isnt it? I think he honestly believes his crappy CGI looks as good as lifelike puppets.
I have always liked puppeteering - it looks *real*. On a slight tangent: which looks better? ST:TNG that used models of the enterprise or babylon 5 which is CG...
I wish I had a mod point for you! Star Wars has to be my favorite story of all time (well, ep 4-6). But the only thing that can make it better, is a downright excellent parody of it!
Mel Brooks is a genious:) (and yes I have Space Balls on DVD...and it HASNT BEEN EDITED)
While I appreciate the story telling of Episodes 1-3 to tie in the original 4-6 trilogy, I will never buy them. 4-6 were my all time favorite movies (I horribly resent the special editions). I *will* buy those (hopefully I will have the option of the original versions) but I dont need the crappy Ep 1-3.
Its saying we are being cooked in exactly the same way a microwave oven cooks food. By vibrating the water molecules all over the place thereby generating heat...

Women? Come on now, we all know THAT is impossible.
I originally thought this was funny. But it gets a "+1 Informative" and that makes it even funnier!
Thanks for brightening my Friday!

That is why there is an imperitive form. The only way to explicitly inform someone that you desire them to do something is to directly say "Do this"
Instead of asking: "May I go to the bathroom", to which the answer might be "No", you would simply state "I am going to the bathroom".

Hah I am just reading the article summary. The one time I dont RTFA I say something dumb. BAH :)

Kinda scarey if its true...
