Watching cosmic rays enter bubble cloud chambers is one of the more fascinating things I did in a physics lab in college. I literally sat there the entire lab period watching little streaks randomly fly through the cloud. Fascinating...
Took me an hour of waiting in line near Philadelphia. To the point where I was worried about being late for work. Got there just after 7 when they opened. My wife had a problem. Seems they registered her to vote here when we moved, then decided on a whim to move her out of the county. Then claimed they mailed us a letter asking us to confirm that she moved out. We we never got a letter nor did we move...
They allowed her to vote anyway after showing a driver's lisence and a utility bill with our current address on it.
Well the trick is to make your money and not be forced to live at work.
I work 40 hours a week as required to get paid and no more. I occasionally will work overtime when we are scrambling for releases but I always get paid for it (helps to work for a government contractor).
I work to make money to have fun. Software engineering is not that much fun, I do it because I am good at it and it makes me money. I then spend the rest of my time doing things I enjoy.
I eat meat with nearly every meal, and own a few leather jackets of varying weights for the different seasons. I do not have a problem with killing an animal to "use" it. Since life on earth seems to be structured this way, its fine with me. But if there is a way to honestly 'grow' leather and meat that didnt require killing an animal, I would be first in line. Assuming of course all the flavor of the meat is retained, and all the warmth, feel, smell of leather is still there.
Presumably this would free up land for other uses. The land previously used for raising cattle could be used as solar or wind evergy farms. This would be particularly necessary since we still would need to get energy from somewhere to do the growing of the 'meat'. Currently this energy is provided by the sun which grows the grass which grows the cows.
Growing the meat directly likely would save a lot of energy. It would also reduce pollution from manure that gets into the water and other chemicals that get used in the process of growing cows.
From a unrepentant consumer of animal's perspective, I see this as a very good thing if it can be scaled to production levels.
Forget snow. What if its -15C out but the roads and sidewalks are clear of snow? It certainly would be a bit dangerous to spend too much time outside, and attempting to ride a bicycle with enough layers on to keep warm would be a bit prohibitive.
There really is no point to double-clutching a car with syncros. Sure it saves wear on the syncros, but really who cares? A well built transmission should have syncros that last much longer than the transmission itself is expected to last.
The syncros are there to do exactly what double clutching does for you. Why not use the feature?
Last time I rented a UHaul truck I noticed I didnt need the key to start or shut it off. I just had to turn the ignition cylinder with my fingers and it would go just fine:)
Of course I was too nervous to actually drive without the key in the ignition so I stuck the key int here just in case.
It is a technique used by race car drivetrs but is useful on the street. In a manaul car it is a process to get your transmission into a lower gear in the shortest amoutn of time possible. As you approach a turn, you are breaking to slow down. The problem is you usually are coming down froma high rate of speed and thus a high gear.
Now you could just go through the curve in neutral, but thats slow since you arent applying throttle. You want to be in gear at all times really. TO do this, as you approach the turn-in point you push down the clutch as you start to down shift, and before you get the gear shift lever into the next lower gear you roll your right foot (which is still pushing on the brake) to touch the throttle. This raises the engine speed, so as you release the clucth you match the revs and the car is now in a lower gear, smoothly, all done WHILE you are slowing down for a turn.
Its not neccesary, of course, but its a nice skill to have, especially if you do any racing. I dont suggest anyone try it based on my description - I am sure I left out some things.
But the whole point is that you use your right foot to press the brake pedal and the gas pedal at the same time to facilitate a smooth rev-matched downshift.
They did this in the VW cars too. I cant heel-toe downshift my Golf and it bothers me. The gas pedal is too far away from the brake. Hell this this a *FEATURE* people. Sure most people never need to learn how to heel-toe downshift, so I guess its a good thing that they cant hit both pedals at the same time. But Audis are billed as "Drivers" cars. Meaning if you love to drive cars, then Audi is for you.
In an automatic I can see there being no use for being able to hit both pedals with the same foot, but why remove this feature from the manual cars? Especially with an Audi which is upscale already, anyone buying the manual is likely buying it because they want the manual, not because its cheaper.
I guess I am being a bit redundant bit its worth pointing out. The bolts were removed to allow a different satellite to be adapted to this TOC unit. The other satellite didnt have the same bolt pattern, so they removed the ones they didnt need (actually they would have been in the way). This is a regular occurance and is supposed to be documented.
Now, why the people mounting the original satellite didnt notice the missing bolts, I dont know. Screw ups on both teams caused the accident...
If there's literally so few nuts and bolts handy for the various projects going on that they feel the need to cannabalize other projects, that's a disaster waiting to happen.
Its not that they cannibalized the cart. They used the cart to turn a different satellite that had a different configuration of bolts to hold it on. They had to remove the bolts so the satellite would fit on the cart properly. The problem was they never documented that they removed the bolts like they were supposed to, and then never put them back on.
The satellite is scrap. Too many sensitive instruments inside were damaged.
I received an email from my boss about this (lockheed internal email) the day after it happened. It said "See what happens when we dont follow our procedures?"
Prohibition was repealed only about 75 years ago...
The rice in beer was started in WWII partially because barley was scares and rice was cheap. As another poster said, it would also appeal to the home-front female workers since it was "lighter". They just never switched back.
Did this happen in California recently? A special election was held to see if the population wanted to dump Davis. Sure enough they did, and then later elected the Governator...
There is a way to remove a president from office. Its not easy on purpose. It is quite a drastic thing to do to rip out the current president. Of course when it happens you get the vice president as president, and in many cases the people that wanted the president out of office wont be happier with his replacement.
YOu broke from your normal routine though. I find I can go long stretches of time without the internet if I am on vacation or something. But for me to be at home, going to work, living my life, etc, I have a very hard time looking over at my computer and NOT touching it. Its part of my daily routinie to be able to read slashdot and other news sites. Being cut off from it probably would drive me crazy.
Take for example graduating from college. Did you know that there are no "below average" college graduates? Proof: In order to graduate from college you must have a GPA equating to a C or better. A C is average, therefore there are no below average college graduates.
No. What you are saying is that all the above-average college STUDENTS graduate. The ones that are below average do not. However, then you have a new subset of people who are "college graduates". These people now have their own set of statistics, including "those who are below average". If you want to go by GPA, then you can figure out the average of the GPA of the graduates and you will have your answer of who is below average.
I *do* occasionally pay attention to the ads on my favorite sites. Ive clicked into and purchased things from Think Geek and other sites that advertise on slashdot. I also have purchased items from the "sponsors" of some other sites I go to alot.
However I have never clicked on an ad at cnn.com (for example) or anything of that nature. The ads there are all obnoxious and largely irrelevent. However, I also am opposed to tracking software that tells the advertiser what ads you want to see. I am more interested in seeing small unobtrusive banners on pages that are entierly relevant to the page they are on.
Nobody confuses "nose" and "noose", so what the hell is up with "lose" and "loose"?
I feel like an idiot responding to people's sigs but here I go.
The 'o' sound in "nose" is a hard 'o'. The word "noose" uses the long 'o sound. Everyone in first grade learns that the long 'o' sound is generally spelled with a double-o. So confusing "nose" and "noose" when typing it is rather hard since the words sound different.
In the "lose"/"loose" case, the words BOTH have a long 'o' sound. The 's', in this case is what changes sounds. "Lose" is an unsual word in that the typical "oo" rule doesnt apply. I can see how its easy to confuse the two since both use the long-o sound. IMO this doesn't excuse anyone from poor spelling, but it at least explains it.
Cant be any worse than flourescent lamps. I cant stand the things myself and hate having to be under them 8 hours/day.
Incandecent bulbs bay ultimatly be yellow in color but they *feel* better. In any case I bet there would eventually be LEDs that are capable of emitting full spectrum light, not just white...
The pay at the pump gas thing is great. The ATM concept shows through well there. One of my cars is a diesel, and not all diesel pumps have the credit card slot. It really is alot more of a pain to have to pay inside, tell the guy you want deisel, blah blah.
As far as the fast-checkin at the airport. Great! For business travelling I just walk up, swpie a card, hit a couple buttons and be on my way. This leaves the vacationers and longer-term business people (checking bags) to stand in their (now much shorter) lines. Everybopdy wins.
But the u-scan-it places at the grocery stores are a bit of a pain. It works well if you previously worked in retail, otherwise its damn slow. Whenever I try using it, I always think I could have been faster at a regular line unless I only have 1 or 2 items. My fiance on the other hand worked at a drug store when she was in high school and has the skills necessary to find bar codes and scan them through fast.
Yea but isnt a service agreement really a contract that you paid for and signed? Presumably you might not have purchased that plan had it not covered the screen?
Or was there wording in the plan you signed that says they reserve the right to do whatever they please? If not then you have a strong case for getting your way. If it did say they can change whatever they like, then the plan is enterly useless since they could just tell you they no longer cover whatever it was that broke....
This is only slightly behind getting a "+5, Troll" mod (Which I someday hope to achieve myself) :D

This is modded funny, but its not all that unlikely. Well at least the patent getting pushed through. Who knows what will happen then.

Its probably similar to Cafe Rica. I brought back a bottle of this from Costa Rica last month. Its quite good, much much better than Kahlua
