I prefer the way the Gnome 2/MATE main menu is laid out vs. Xfce, and I also prefer Gnome 2's panel (in particular, the customizing/reordering interface) to Xfce's, and its panel applets.
There's just something about how KDE's UI is laid out that rubs me the wrong way.
Long-time Gnome 2 user here, probably switching to MATE. Don't care for Xfce and LXDE is too basic for my taste, as are most of the standalone WMs. Window Maker is fugly.
My two favorite computer UIs today are Gnome 2.3x + Compiz and Windows 7 + Cygwin. They mostly just work, are good about staying out of my way, and have nice UI flourishes like live preview and Aero Snap.
I've been told more recently (within the past two years) that this isn't quite true any longer: the computer in his office doesn't have a password, but he has to use one for any other machine on campus.
In my experience Pulse will sometimes not work at all, and other times when you change the system volume it will lag on changing quite a bit or make the sound mute briefly.
I had a much better experience overall with ALSA and ESD.
Pretty much. This is a stupid question because what repressive government is going to admit that they're censoring something, and on top of that not make it some kind of crime for the service provider to let you know?
Nothing too odd about it. They've done the same thing with Gnome for the past six years: whichever is the most recently released version at the time of an LTS release gets the extra-long support, full stop.
They did the same for the just-getting-usable KDE 4.4 with the 10.04 LTS, though with 8.04 you could either stick with KDE 3.5 or try out 4.0.
Now if only this trojan could be targeted at certain prominent conservatives... say Limbaugh, Murdoch, et al. When it came out they'd gotten this on their computers, bet you the conservative media drumbeat changes.
And before someone younger than 26 comes in and says "I'm not careless!", the individual case is irrelevant; this is statistics, taking into account the tendencies of a large number of people.
Paying extra on your insurance if you think you're not careless sucks, but you're probably still not as careful as you will be in a few years.
PS: the worst group here is actually under-25 males.
It's not just in IT that companies don't want to pay a living wage. I live near Joplin, MO and the state Republicans want to overturn a law that requires construction, etc. companies to pay the area market prevailing wage, which would be awfully nice for people who've been underemployed for years until the tornado hit.
The very same individuals will turn around and bitch about the illegals coming in and taking American jobs away.
They can afford to because they've got the support of enough other senators, who can afford to because their voters either want this or don't care.
I have argued with people who see the patriot act and TSA as good things. It's soul-crushing.
The gripe about applets moving around with resolution changes is certainly true! I don't care for vertical panels so I've never run into that problem.
If someone has a patch to make the Xfce main menu look like Gnome 2's I'll consider that. It's a minor thing, but IMO it's a much better layout.
Herpaderp. I can't give your troll any more than 0/10; put some effort into it.

Is sir of the opinion that /. ever had standards?
Also there is still Yellow Dog Linux, which has always been exclusively for PowerPC systems.
I've got it in a VM now. It's obsolete (Gnome 2.22 & Linux 2.6.24) but they appear to be maintaining it - the kernel was last compiled on 26 May 2012.
I thought Gnewsense was abandoned - no updates since September '09. Not so?

The locals in Petersburg haven't forgotten the siege, huh? Should have let them know the war was over.

...if you can say that Eric Cantor isn't a crackpot, anyhow. That's disputed.
One wonders if Adobe will revisit that decision if Mozilla changes their minds. Bet you they would.
Hah, good catch. I've got our old Office 2003 volume license key memorized.
No, the saying is "all hardware sucks. All software sucks."
Also: down, not across.

Are you of the opinion that Linus isn't a grownup? He posted a rant about SuSE on his G+ page a few months back:

I fucking love the Internet.
