The exact reason for the 5 mile radius has to do with the errors associated with radar and how far a plane can travel in the time it takes for the radar sweep to update. It's generally 3 mile radius/1000ft vertical near airports, 5 mile radius/1000ft vertical away from airports up to flight level 290, then 5 mile radius/2000ft vertical above that.
but yes, you're correct, it's generally a system that 'fails well'.
There are some regulations like that in both the airline industry and for air traffic controllers. The airlines bend over backwards to follow them even for mechanics and flight attendants, but air traffic controllers still get stuck with quick turn (8 hours off between shifts) and ironman (quick turn w/ 16 hours for the second shift) work schedules.
I am planning to become an air traffic controller, so it bugs me that flight attendants have stricter rules for work schedules than I will.
Good idea but probly wouldn't make a good movie. The reason zombies are scary is because humans generally don't chase down and eat other humans.
Dinosaurs don't need to be zombies to chase down and eat humans. If they were zombies, I suppose they would chase each other and eat members of the same species.
Wow, fighting zombie dinosaurs, maybe that would be an awesome movie.
"I suggested above that we might think of the ball in the soccer metaphor as a quasi-technology, as that site where multitudinous forces are catalyzed and converge. Neither subject nor object in the traditional sense, the ball acts much like language when we are sensitive to the ethico-rhetorical dimensions of linguistic performance."
Thanks for the suggestion but I'd rather not have my source of income vanish.
The odds of the FAA ever, ever getting an automated system off the ground are pretty much zero. Controllers are still using radars with "CAB" labels on them, even though the Civil Aeronautics Board was dissolved in 1958. Countless 'modernization' projects have been started and abandoned because the FAA can't seem to pull its head from its own ass. That cunt and a half Marion Blakey fucked things up to the point that we're virtually assured we won't see an automated system for several decades.
Even the most ambitious automated systems currently planned (Specifically 'Free Flight') would still require a controller at all times to fix potential conflicts and for liability issues.
How many stories have we seen about people being sued that didn't even own computers or were deceased?
I am not saying that is the case here, or that his son did not steal anything. What I am saying is that the RIAA is by no means an entity that does not make mistakes. Just because they say he's a thief does not mean he is.
Besides, I think it's about time we took a second look at this whole digital music thing and decide what actually constitutes thievery.
"California has very strong laws requiring schools to protect the privacy of students - and if there should be legal action would be compelled to act in protecting student privacy."
Maybe I'm missing something here, but what I get out of this is that California law requires that the school protect your son, but is choosing not too. Shouldn't this be a major concern in the overall case?
Just out of curiosity, has anyone on Slashdot been on the receiving end of an RIAA suit, or possibly a lawyer dealing with a client who has been? Or not even directly involved, but just know someone who's been through this ordeal?
Every time a story like this comes up I read as many comments as I can and think, "Well fuck, if it's this obvious to everyone here that what's happening is out of line and in some cases illegal, why can't that message be communicated more broadly?"
I have an extensive list of information I've been saving from Slashdot just on the off chance I ever get an RIAA letter in the mail (I d/l maybe an album per month, 90% of the time I buy it after listening). If I find myself facing one of these suits, I would immediately turn over to my lawyer everything I've compiled to be sure they're aware of what should be argued and what RIAA claims are total BS.
Is there an existing repository for information like this, or is it time people like us Slashdotters created one?
I wish I knew where this originally came from, I only heard it as a sound byte in the beginning of a song:
"The confrontation was not created by the police, the confrontation was created by the people who charged the police. Gentlemen, get the thing straight once and for all. The policeman isn't there to create disorder, the policemen is there to preserve disorder."
You know the scariest part of that whole movie? The damn colossus voice. They did an amazing job with that.
It could have been saying "I like bunnies and rainbows" and it still would have been fucking terrifying.
I could entertain myself for hours doing that. Greek is the best.
"Geja'soy, I am jim. I am student in the university Purdue I studying the management of aviation. I seek to become controller of enae'ras circulation in the way of a exchange. Appreciates the television games, more specifically maximum governor"
Apparently Supreme Commander in Greek is 'maximum governer'
Roger that. It's just that whenever I see that Google 2015 flash video I just imagine conspiracy theorists yelling out "Oh no!!! we must stop teh Google!!!"

There's a £55 bill? That's almost weirder than the $2 bill we used to have over here.
"a BBC account of a dad who traveled to Nigeria and brought back an XO laptop"
So...did he scam a Nigerian?

Unless you're planning to shower with acid, I don't foresee that dirt coming off anytime soon.

I'd go immediately, 4 to 1 is the best ratio I've ever seen.
All I will say is that the name 'NoPantsJim' was not given, it was earned.
COULD be made? Hell I made one myself just so I could find stuff faster.
You're kidding, right?

brb, gonna go patent the practice of modding separate parts of a single post.

damn, beat me to it. Good lord do I ever love that movie. Hopefully Ron Howard's remake can do it justice. http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=19966
Just how many maps and blueprints are in your porn collection?
...until you get eaten.

Makes me glad they still give anesthetics despite unconsciousness.
Motorcycle helmets aren't low budget. Ever see V for Vendetta? The soldiers at the end were all wearing paintball masks. Really shitty ones too.
I agree. Google/Yahoo, please start with my worthless web company.
