Pretty shit name. Pretty much the only worse name for a distro I can think of would be "Smegmux", which is horrific - except for the fact that Linpus is real.
Ironically, considering the lack of fragmentation of the FreeBSD platform, as well as the less restrictive BSD license, I'd imagine FreeBSD would be better suited towards commercial support/drivers. (And, on a more subjective note, its userbase and leadership - less feverish than Linux's and a fair bit more pragmatic - might mesh better with the business world's expectations.)
Personally, I'm of the opinion that if you're concerned about the ethics of what is to all intents and purposes computer code, to the point where you'll protest about it, you've got wayyyyy too much emotion invested in your computer. Seriously.
They already don't pay any licensing fees for Ogg or Theora or whatever, and the fees they pay for MP4/MP3/etc support won't change if Ogg support is added.
Very few users use Ogg Vorbis, to the point where it'd be a waste of time to add support for it - it may be technically better, but nobody really uses it outside of the FOSS community.
Encoding things for iPod or iPhone? There's Handbrake, iTunes itself, faac... just off the top of my head. All free software (if not in speech, then as in beer.) Barrier to entry? Pfft.
Hah, no. I have AS and I found your post funny as fuck. Certainly can imagine a few decent uses for "adsperger", where companies have grossly failed to comprehend who their market are and fucked up in that vein. McDonalds' advertising a burger with "I'd hit that" a while back springs to mind.
Yes, when I've been involuntarily committed for a mental illness where I see one of my greatest fears pouring out of every orifice, my first thought will be to have some snarky, anarchic fun too.
Kid A and Amnesiac may well be slightly "pretentious", but they're good experimental music albums. If you're willing to listen to what's basically Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, David Bowie's Low and Aphex Twin mashed up together, then they're a rewarding listen.
In Rainbows and Hail To The Thief however could hardly be considered pretentious, though. Hail To The Thief is, for the most part, straightforward alt rock (even if with some eclectic electronica in places) and In Rainbows is, as a sibling comment said, extremely accessible. The damn album has love songs on it, for christ's sake, and the last time they did one of those so straightforwardly was on Pablo Honey back in 1993.
To wit, a service is more valuable if more people use it, and a corresponding service is less valuable if less people use it.
There's also the whole thing about having photos, messaging, IM, public sharing, info sharing etc all under one roof. It's convenient, if nothing else.
It was triggered by a chain reaction of events that began with a magnitude 7.7 earthquake on the Fairweather Fault, which dislodged a rock fall of 40 million cubic yards, that fell 3,000 feet and splashed into the northwest end of Lituya Bay to generate the wave.
Well... yeah. If you buy the software, you get the first-sale rights; if you rent it, you don't. You may as well complain that Blockbuster take away your first sale rights by only renting DVDs to you.
AMSN is quite good, and is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. Considering what a piece of shit MS Messenger for Mac is, it's a breath of fresh air. Only downside is it looks quite clunky and doesn't really fit in with most any desktop environment.
Given that they have 9 Gbps of bandwidth dedicated to denial-of-service attacks against torrent trackers, all anyone needs to do is to trick them into attacking a hospital or government facility.
While it's a stupid thing to do (DDOSing random trackers that is), why the fuck would a government facility or hospital be running a torrent tracker?

Because "politically incorrect" is generally used to smear people?

Half-Life.
Yes, I know, "aliens", but fuck, I don't care.
I would like to nominate this as the most fantastic, most brilliantly understated put down on Slashdot ever.
Stupid semantic unfunny "LAWLZ fucking adults ROFL ive nevar done that lolz" jokes can die in fires.
Her introduction to the open source/geek culture is progressing well though.
Perhaps you should introduce her to something less deleterious to social lives first. Something like anorexia, or heroin.

I have yet to hear anybody answer that question with something that doesn't boil down to "everybody else is doing it". Hence the high school comment.
Network effect. Network effect. Network effect.

It's a Rube Goldberg disaster.
No, real geeks would avoid FLOSS, as with most other forms of dental hygiene.
You won't get Skype on it since Skype is completely proprietary (and why on earth would you want it?)
Because most people with VoIP on their computers use Skype.

Multi-line messages, and 'send to offline users' are the two features of ICQ that SHOULD have been copied by MSN, but wasn't.
It has both now, although you have to hold down either shift or control to insert a newline. Get your point though.
You and me both.
"Persecuting the motorist?" The ones that break the law, yes...
You forget one of the real biggies: Rockstar North (nee DMA Design) who created the Grand Theft Auto series.
It was also a lie.
They did try to test a Belkin one, but that one failed even before they'd subjected it to the particle accelerator.
Tell that to the people who worked at Chernobyl.
;)
Oh wait, you can't; they were all blowed up.
But why don't *they* let me install the only things I want during setup, hmm?
You can. At the very least you can disable the install of GarageBand, not sure about iChat though.
