No, what happened to the Irish Lisbon Treaty vote was as follows:

    Original question sounded like:
Do you want to be part of an unaccountable superstate which is ruled by Brussels, after fighting for your independence for dozens of years?

The second vote (just voted on) forced onto the people sounded like:
Do you want lots of free money from the other sucker 26 European countries to prop-up your now basket case economy, and so save lots more jobs? You'll still be in the unaccountable superstate, but look, we're giving you all this money to buy your vote.

  5. Re:Good on "Windows 7 Compatible" PCs Must Be 64-bit · · Score: 2, Funny

I would like to sound real smug right now at how I run 64bit Firefox with 64bit Flash on my 64bit Linux machine, but the fact remains the same as for 32bit. Flash is badly written, is still an enormous CPU hog on a 64bit system, with an ability to grind a 64bit machine slower than ANY other heavyweight application I've used. The CPU usage of Flash even occasionally manages to beat how much CPU HD-Video (MPEG4 encoded) takes to play back.

After about 2 1/2 years Linux users finally have a new (beta) version of Skype*, but it's STILL not 64 bit. Google, when will they ever get a 64bit version out of GoogleEarth?

Whilst these major projects have waited for Windows to go 64bit, they could have used Linux as their "test bed", more knowledgeable users and a "free" testing base. Instead they choose to wait and wait for Windows.

    * Skype did not improve on the design or layout of the Linux version, despite KDE4 being out a long time now.

  6. Re:This is Sony we're talking about on PSP Go Debuts, Disappoints · · Score: 1

Whilst I HATE defending Sony, I will in the case of Minidisc. Mainly, the Minidisc came out before MP3 was anywhere in the market place. The recorder was proprietary, but it recorded high quality audio (although using ATRAC compression). If anyone had a portable audio DAT deck that died (I did), the Minidisc was the next best thing for recording high quality audio, and cheaper. As far as I recall, there were no Dolby-S equipped "Walkmans", let alone _portable_ Dolby-S consumer recorders.

Only a few years later (ie. today) do we have the ability to record straight to memory cards, uncompressed and higher sampling rate, and better than 16bits. Thankfully Sony do not lead in this field.

Next thing you know they will tell us that all that water usage at a Space Shuttle launch is not necessary for sound suppression, and it's perfectly safe to have yourself right next to the shuttle launch, your hearing won't be blasted to kingdom come.

All loud sounds are damaging, no matter how short the bust actually is. The hair follicles within the ear cannot grow back, once damaged that's it. That's why we have progressively worse hearing in old age.

  11. Re:What if...? on Sony Ericsson Develops Contact Headphones · · Score: 1

If you listen to music with one ear, then Sony assumes you are a pirate who is letting the music be shared with your friends, so they stop the music playback. It is thus their latest attempt at DRM. You can only listen to music yourself, not with your friends!

  14. Get stuffed BBC on BBC Wants DRM On HD Broadcasts · · Score: 3, Insightful

First the BBC expects me to put up with rubbish SD quality digital television called "Freeview", analogue TV picture and audio is being deliberately degraded to make Freeview look good before the analogue switch off. Then as soon as a few* people** watch the "test" transmission from satellite of some BBC content in HD, they want to cripple it.

Go f-off BBC, like others, I pay a huge amount in a compulsory BBC tax every year for a progressively worse service and worse programming content. Freeview (digital tv) being pushed by the BBC is rubbish, DAB (digital radio) also being pushed by the BBC is also rubbish, now you want to turn HD into cr@p.

BTW, we don't want the HD channel wasted with hundreds of hours of pointless Olympics in 2012, shove that cr@p on your Freeview instead.

    * Seriously, there can't be many with HD satellite in the UK....

** I got my Linux box to work with watching satellite HD. Ironically Windows is very problematic with HD and numerous flakey video watching / recording applications (even the paid stuff).
