    it's john, not jon. john had nothing to do with unreal, except perhaps he inspired it. john may be great at making computer games, but you can't say that he'd necessarily be great at solving the worlds problems. playing violent games doesn't necessarily make you violent. i would imagine living in a totally violent environment may, but that is another matter altogether.

    oh and by the way, you are full of crap, troll...

    i wish that nintendo would ask sega, neogeo, atari, williams, snk, etc. to rerelease some of their older big titles from consoles and arcade systems past to the gba or ds. there are far too many great games that i'd love to play again...

    i am curious, if say id were to make a 64bit compiled version of doom3 would it run in win2k or xp? for instance, apparently you can run 64bit apps on osx even though the os isn't 64bit itself. is this possible?

    you know, the same thing you said could be said about the ps2 at launch. it's launch titles were pretty piss poor (certainly not taking advantage of the possibilities for a while), but somehow it got to where it is today. i think with enough developer support and backward compatibility it will see the possibilities come to fruition in a short time after launch...

    looks to me like sony is overestimating the market for this thing. i have a feeling that unless it becomes thinner and lighter it will disappear into the history of consumer electronics as an 'interesting gadget before it's time (and reason to exist)'...

    well, keep in mind...

    ati does well in the directx area, but not as hot in the opengl area. doom3 is an opengl game...

    the real genius of id's games since wolf3d has not been that the games themselves are amazing (which they often are) it is that they have been able to push hardware to do things that folks haven't been able to do with it since.

    as i mentioned with wolf3d, you could run that game on a 286 computer and it ran pretty fast (i used to play it in highschool on our fastest pc, a 286-12mhz (ibm model 30 all-in-one unit, i think it was)...

    doom3 is the same here, they are pushing pixels with essentially "ordinary" hardware.

    it depends really... by doing doa the way they did, they essentially marketed themselves out of the female market, which may not be huge itself, but a volleyball game is the type of game girls might play.

    as pop3 access to gmail would be a nice addition (if they added native support instead of requiring folks to use 3rd party apps like pgtgm) i think a more interesting solution would be imap. it is a more logical extension of the idea to keep all your mail together on the server forever...

    i would imagine this to be the case, at least to a small degree. ever try loading windows 3.1 on a new machine and see the difference between it and win98 or 2000/xp? you'll see a similar example.

    os9, like win3.1 isn't nearly as complex as osx or nt. there will be some things that run faster, but as another user said, if you are doing lots of multitasking i suspect you would notice a large negative difference...
