i wouldn't say they are 'very much' against it, rather they just haven't made any attempts at drm or made any major announcements as to their future intentions regarding drm...
firstly, it is likely that the university will have fiber lines as well as their own phone switch which will pretty much negate the possibility of getting dsl to work in the first place.
secondly, campuses are starting to keep a closer eye on what you are using that connection for. this kid will be responsible for your actions. for example, if they have a no-filesharing rule or other such abuse policy restrictions, and you aren't aware of it you could get him in trouble...
a possible solution to the first problem would be to setup a wifi network, assuming that isn't against campus computer rules, and a nice antenna that can toss the signal far enough away, towards your house...
people that drive in boston aren't usually people that live in boston. most bostoners i know (quite a few people in my family and a lot of friends) use the public transit as it is quite nice...
not if you live in new york... they have a no cell phone while driving law and you are more likely to get that ticket... (i understand you were joking however =) )
however here's another example of vaporware that turned out to be a hoax as well. remember the florida guy who 'invented' the magic modem? the one that would 'revolutionize the telecom industry overnight'? the one that made him incredibly rich, quite famous, then disappears with the pile of money, and is ultimately arrested for drug and assault rifle possesion charges?
yeah, that was a pretty good story... too bad it was true.
Iinteresting that you mention 3DO and Trip Hawkins... Trip founded EA back in '82... EA became a successful busines while 3DO floundered into merely a brandname...
exactly. if someone is offering you a job interview they aren't going to go out of their way to contact you. especially in this job market. if they have to jump through hoops just to get an email through i can see them just not even bothering...
brett, i'm not quite sure what you mean by your post. i guess my question is, who is 'we' and how come my grandmother still gets 20 spams a day in her aol account? the article you linked are parts of a solution, but if my grandmother can't make it work on her machine, then they don't really matter in the long run because spam will continue to propogate right? i also think a few of the things mentioned in your presentation go about the problem in somewhat of a wrong way (imho). for instance rbl and blacklists have proven to be difficult solutions to the problem as they have blacklisted the wrong hosts and caused much grief to people...
that said, i've dug your articles for years. thanks:)
actually bowie has said in various interviews that he 1) has an ipod and 2) he has used filesharing systems. i think he's pretty attuned to what is going on in the world and how the technology is being used...
i would think that amazon would also stop selling certain things that weren't getting good ratings after a period of time. it would make business sense to do so.
instead of having 10 products and 2 of them are found to be crap, eliminate them altogether and have 8 great products.
it is my guess that amazon does this and that is partially why you don't see too many things that have been available for a long time with very low recommendations and rankings (or stars)...
yeah i remember the good old days back when the user count was below 2000. gee i wish it was those days again!
kidding aside, what/. is is what the users make it. most of the articles that are posted are from user submissions. a great deal of the same guys that were at/. early on are the same ones posting the submissions to this day. something to think about...
i always wanted a free kevin bumper sticker but i feared nobody would understand its meaning. especially since my first name is kevin...

nice idea but a few problems...

yeah, or give them free advertising...
/. has everyones best interests in mind...
not everyone that reads
to relate issue number 1, win95 on the same machine as win3.1 is slower... that issue is a stupid argument...
popfile, it won't end your woes but it will help your users out...
more of a hoax than vaporware i suppose...

I'm curious how many people remember this...
Trip Hawkins founded EA back in '82...
EA became a successful busines...
Trip founded 3DO back in '93...
3DO floundered into merely a brandname...
Guess one out of two isn't bad (actually there's more to it than that but that's another story). =)
Iinteresting that you mention 3DO and Trip Hawkins... Trip founded EA back in '82... EA became a successful busines while 3DO floundered into merely a brandname...
i wonder if my copy of adventure for trs80 on floppy with original manual (and a scrawled map of the game on graphing paper) is worth anything...
the problem with putting the cat back in the bag is the damned thing is breeding...
sounds like they misunderestimated your verbal linguistics.
