buy a new dvd player (many new one are including hdcd support right out of the box). hook up the optical output (or whatever the highest quality ins'n'outs you have, however they might not be good enough...) to your fancy soundcards input. start recording. don't bother to encode to mp3 or ogg if you are truly concerned (ie if you are a diehard audiophile) with hifi sound as any lossy compression will degrade the quality.

couldn't microsoft also contain new code on newer xbox games that could update stuff like the bios, a bit of code in the cpu or gpu, or update something on the hard drive that could modify it enough to make it hard for modchippers? this way, people might be able to play those old games they have now, but newer games will look for something in the hardware and won't play. just a thought...
sounds like a laser alignment or focusing problem... you could try to clean the lens as it can't really get any worse... other than that, it would really require professional repair (or someone who has bought the repair manual and can get parts from philips/magnavox...

i dunno, but i think that you're not going to see too many rare fans fawning for xbox because of this... judging by how many people here are panning this in this forum alone, it doesn't look like a sound decision. guess we'll see.
i don't think it is in ibm's best interest to promote mysql in any way. i mean, they are trying to sell db2 and it comes in different flavors for their different systems that they sell, so they can market it from huge enterprises to smaller companies. mysql might be attractive to those smaller companies who aren't as interested in the 'robustness' as they are in getting a little something for nothing...

what about a solution like tightvnc (or one of its cousins) for remote stuff then? it does most (not all mind you) of what x does w/o all the crud that x brings w/ it, and it is very platform independent and w/ ssh you can make it very secure.
yeah the woodwright shop is a much better and more interesting show because he likes to talk about how the various tools were invented, their history and all. besides, you can't say that a guy who makes his own tools isn't cool.
i think it could be argued that first sale doctrine doesn't count when dealing with something that you have only purchased the rights to view, not the actual product (as in a movie, music, etc.). you do not inherintly have the right to do what you wish with these items as court cases have shown. when you buy a dvd you are merely buying the right to view it on a standard media. nothing more nothing less. this is how the laws are currently written, however this will hopefully change.
could'ves. i invented the energy saving monitor 3 years before there ever was one. my step father invented the minivan. do i live in a mansion or drive a porsche? nope. guess this is where that 'patenting for the little people' article comes in, huh? =)
your complaint about NDD is just that, a complaint about NDD, not OSX. if symantec would release a version that wasn't so buggy you wouldn't have those problems.
as for other issues, most software vendors are releasing newer versions of their software that are compatible w/ OSX. it's not apple's fault they can't get on the ball...
i know that he used to like dev'ing on next machines, as the original doom was done on that platform, as well as others i believe. in fact, id software auctioned the old next machines they used a few years ago (posted on slashdot)...
most hybrids look butt ugly, except for the honda civic hybrid which looks exactly like a civic. of course you may not like the civic's stylings either but it is a nice alternative.
...problem is the cost of two cpu's would probably make the pricing of such a system too high for most users (no apple jokes, please). perhaps a g4 type cpu imbedded in the same power64 core? it would probably run outrageously hot, and would be expensive to produce. on top of that it would add much more complexity and they might have a lower die yield. interesting problem to solve, for sure.

this is important cuz osx is similar to next programatically. developers who like next seem to be sweet on osx.

err... i meant to say pentium4 (or something akin to it), not power64. power64 should be able to run the same software w/o problem.
