Running VMWare under Linux, not under Windows, could provide a needed security blanket for those people that aren't used to sudden change. If they weren't serious about the move they wouldn't be doing this transitional thing; remember that these are mainly office paper pushers, not computer geeks.
Does anyone here actually use Netscape as their default browser?
Netscape 4.75 on OpenBSD and SGI IRIX here. It's not the most feature crammed browser but we pipe through a Privoxy filter which loops back through a Squid cache so junk is filtered.
On the only Windows machine I use (a game box at home) I have Firebird (nee: Phoenix) running. Again, through a Privoxy/Squid dynamic duo.
Today we glamourize criminal behaviour the way they did for Bonnie & Clyde or Billy the Kid years earlier. Not to say downloading MP3s is tantamount to murder:)
"I'm only downloading $GOODIES that I own." or "I'm doing nothing wrong!" ? While I love these new features, it's an overt attempt at blocking the RIAA/MPAA. If the sharers really think they're doing nothing wrong then why use these new mods in the first place?
That said, I'm downloading the new KazaaLite to home.:)
I still have the privacy of my own home, which is the only place I really had privacy in the first place
Nonsense. Carnivore, sweeping line taps which net whole exchanges to listen to one line, Ashcroft promoting your neighbours to spy on you... Need I go on?
I'm a happy {Free|Open}BSD user after switching from Linux about 4 years ago. I haven't had to monkey with Alice's patches to Bob's kernel mods to run Charles' software since. This isn't a Linux slam but with the BSD family, once you have a stable system it just runs until the hardware dies. In fact I only reboot my OpenBSD boxes when there is a security hole (you know how often that is!) or big upgrade to the kernel/OS that I want, not just the Kernel du Jour.
Ahhh, the PBS one.. as opposed to Robert X. Cringely the nuclear physicist, Robert X. Cringely the investment banker or Robert X. Cringely the astronaut.
to impose fines on anyone selling games to minors depicting violence against 'law enforcement officers'
So it's legal to sell games where you blow away Ma and Pa Kettle but don't dare kill a cop in a game or it's illegal? Since when did law enforcement become some sort of sacred cow? Hmmm... I wonder if 3D Realms will have to re-do Duke Nukem 3D, recall that you could kill pigs in cop outfits in that game.
Alice: Damn these moquitos are eating me alive. Someone call me.
Bob: I would but I'm waiting for Carl across the table to call me first, I'm almost out of blood.
Carl: Just a sec Bob, I'm calling Dave.
Dave: ahhhh..
...they expect adoption of desktop Linux to increase over the next few years
At first glance that sounds terrible, almost like a death knell to Linux on the desktop. Virtually every person who will have a computer in a "few years" will already has one today. They won't be bringing in many new users, they'll be converting existing Windows users. That must keep Bill up at night.
Child: Daddy, what's that "Finding Nemo 2" about? Father: Let's look on our phone, son. >clicky click click Father: Hmm.. it appears to be about a man stretching his bottom wide open.
Any returns of C or C++ code might get SCO's law team on your ass..

They'll make a total mess of
That's good news. I was hoping to take a large tesla coil with me the next time I go flying.
Use lynx or w3m and search on google like the rest of us, ya Nancy-boys..
How can you compare the two?
Because this is Slashdot, silly!
In reality, comparison against another embedded/tiny OS would have made more sense; QNX for example.

NEO PEZ DISPENSER?
There is no Pez. If you watched the movie rather the girl 3 rows up you'd have known this.

Mr. Dick, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" was the basis for Blade Runner. What was your favourite, the original or the director's cut?
Ha! You can't answer because you're dead!
I think I better to go bed.
All Open Source developers eat at soup kitchens and sleep at the YMCA between welfare cheques. Well.. not all; Theo de Raadt is too cool for that.
"Darwin Awards Club" is more like it.

"C++ is to C as Lung Cancer is to Lung"
- a sig I read on slashdot
What does Alan C++0x think of this?
At $5 billion a pop, I can only imagine what a Beowulf cluster of these would be like..

Of course, we could put the Library of Congress holdings on it or 10,000 movies
10,000 movies? The MPAA would like to have a word with him..
That's just stupid.

You mean Chris Sontag isn't serious about wanting Linux to grow and prosper? That greedy son of a bitch!

Oh this would be such fun to hack..
