  1. Un-Used Knowledge is Useless on Duke Scientists Map 'Silenced Genes' · · Score: 1

    Why concerned, but not ecstatic?

If you had no plan on applying genetic research, there would be no worldly reason to perform the research in the first place. Sure, Science for Science's sake is fun, but I'm sure a 1000x1000 grid Sudoku puzzle that used every known symbol would be just as consuming/fulfilling. More to the point, if you want further high-level research you need financial backing (Investors usually invest in projects that have a chance of a positive return).

You may have missed the point...

"'The sensors are all off-the-shelf parts,' Adelsberger says, making the system much cheaper than other motion-capture technology. It cost about $3,000 currently, but this could come down to a few hundred dollars, he says, if the sensors are mass-produced."

Forget about buying an already built commercial system, this is a MAKER's dream. Run it on a home-built laptop for extra points.

  8. Re:Imminent destruction! on Everyday Copyright Violations · · Score: 1

This was a decent discussion on BoingBoing not too long ago.

"Is it true that it's 'not infringement once fair use kicks in' ?

Fair use is a defense to infringement where you admit infringement but say it was justified, isn't it? You affirm the boundaries of copyright but justify crossing them, rather than arguing that the boundaries should be moved. This is why it's argued on a case-by-case basis.

This article suggests some good reasons to move the boundaries, I think."

Not sure if that's right (IANAL), but it sure sounds like it to this lay-person.

I'm hoping some +5 brilliant mind can tell me if the mess-up with the data collection on the star we use as a base line effects this study's findings, and exactly how.

I came to learn, not annoy.
