  1. THE monitoring software on Student Given Detention For Using Firefox [UPDATED] · · Score: 1

Have you been to a school that doesn't monitor what you do online, or block certain sites? I would be happy to hear about it, but it would be far from the norm.

  2. I just ______ a GBA and am loving it... on Wii Shortages Costing Nintendo 'A Billion' In Sales · · Score: 1

You pay for the GBA? You do know you can just emulate it for free. Free for the system, free for the roms. The one reason I *might* buy myself a Wii or DS is the lack of working emulators.

Afraid/Morally Obligated to only use legal software? Go to GameHippo.com (or one of the other thousand or so freeware sites), there are tons of free games to download - many of which you can use to edit your own new levels.

Bought the GBA because its portable? Try getting some extra use out of your laptop (with such a low User ID, I would be surprised if you didn't have one). You'll get the extra benefit of looking like you're doing something important instead of just messing around with some kid game (because, really, how many adult-oriented games are there that aren't xxx-adult?).

  5. How about the possibility.. on Student Given Detention For Using Firefox [UPDATED] · · Score: 2, Interesting

I wonder if the teacher actually knew what the program was, but wasn't sure if the school's monitoring software would work with it.

If not, I'm sure the teacher could get in trouble for not making the kid use IE.

Not saying its right, just saying its a possibility.

The only thing managers/owners I've met were worried about was imprinting their brand on happy customers. Sure they think about how any decision will affect their type of "guest" and if it meshes with the place's current image, but that doesn't go as far as "will they eat more meat if I use a pink tablecloth vs a red one?"

  14. Selling My Soul, Ask Me How Much! on RIAA Argues That MP3s From CDs Are Unauthorized · · Score: 1

Great site, I've been on it constantly since BoingBoing showed it to me. I have a very broad taste in music, and am addicted to any site with "points" (half the reason I finally got a /. account was the ability to keep track of my comments so I could check how they did), so they basically had me at hello.

That being said, the parent forgot to point-whore himself for the site. May I profit from his mistakes! If any of you decide to sign up for TheSixtyOne, please please list "Become" as your referer.

For those of you who already play around on the site: how legal is it? Are the artists uploading their music, or am I just listening to illegal copies? Or is it, perhaps, legally safe because it is just some weird version of streaming internet radio?

Watch it - online gamboling (much like copying protected content or circumventing copy-protection) is massively illegal in the US!

My thoughts about this (and the tech where your personal info is embedded in your legal/bought copy of movies/music) as follows.

Would you have to actually remove the watermarks? If they are designed so that they don't corrupt the media enough for you to notice/care, it should be simple to write random white-noise over the watermarked sections. Hopefully the new data would also be of very little nuisance to the viewer, while their signal would be lost in the noise. Monitoring software is useless when it no longer recognizes the watermark.

Granted, I have no clue what I'm talking about. Enlighten me, is this viable?
