  1. Re:Nope, sorry. on Microsoft To Pay People To Search · · Score: 1

I don't think cultural inertia plays such a big part on the internet and in IT in general.
Altavista, hotmail, infoseek were not saved by it, they died very quickly as soon as better services appeared. And these better services weren't that ridiculously better. While cultural intertia can carry social site far, this is not true for utility sites. Sites which provide tangible or measurable services.

I won't leave myspace for facebook, cause I have a lot of friends on myspace, but I will be quick to change search engines if it will provide me with better results. Cause I have not social or emotional ties to my homepage or search engine.

If someone came up with a better search engine tomorrow it would quickly spread I guarantee you. Within a month almost every IT professional would have switched to it. Within 6 months it would be true for every advanced computers user.

I can it's true for myself, if you told be there's a better search engine, I would be quick to change my homepage, and add it to the quicksearch in firefox.

Which cultral aspect would prevent me from doing so?

Mind you, the only two forums i am regular at are unmodarated. Granted they are quite uninformative, and there is certain kind of community policing.

But moderation is required, however as slashdot has proven a moderation mainly based on rewarding then punishing works much better.

I think slashdot is best example of moderation, if you think mods are unfair you can alway surf at -1 and see all the posts.

I think the problem here isn't the existence of 'free will' but with out definition and our perception of it. Just because a definition exists it doesn't mean it can't redefined or proclaimed as invalid.

So maybe the title should be 'Brain Study Calls current definition of Free will into question.', but that's not as sensational.

The industry has less cd's to distribute and print, and most of the distribution can be done via websites. Which once created and designed, require a relatively simple upload of a certain album/song which can be done by well trained cat and dog tandem.

maybe as a commercial model, but not as gaming experience. Using the same logic windows is the best operating system around Best music in late 90s and early 2000s was performed by Brittney Spears.

WoW has hit critical mass, and new players are not joining it because it's still the best game around, but because they want to know what's all the fuss about. If you never played an MMORPG, and you wanted to play one, which one would you pick? WoW, of course. But not because it IS the best game around but because it's the most played game around. You would use the 'well 10 million people can't be wrong' logic, in picking your first MMORPG.

That's classic example of herd mentality, not quality.

Is the death of newspapers, death of journalism? I appreciate the fact that the quality of average newspaper article far surpasses the quality of the average blog. In addition that a lot of news online directly and indirectly originates from newspaper articles.

However it is possible to have a website, that has the same quality writers and same quality articles as your favorite newspaper, with its investigative journalist and all. The real problem is, tab surfing. Internet surfers have shorter attention span (or div, hehe lame joke) then a TV watcher, let alone newspaper reader. Long articles are hard to read online, that's the real problem. Actually any text that has more then 200 words is bothersome to read online, I bet a lot of people thought, 'wow long reply I will skip this one', when they saw this reply.

In fact, speaking of internet killing the newspaper (internet killed the newspaper star), what about slashdot? While it doesn't have much original material it acts as a very good filter for geeky news, and that's how I see newspapers primarily as a filter. Slashdot has pretty much replaced my need for buying computer magazines. Although I still buy few magazines, but mainly for the columnist and not news.
