>There's an upside to that: If you ignore them enough, they die off...unlike current marketing firms.
Great, that's even worse, only the ones you can't ignore will survive and keep getting harder and harder to ignore. I guess kindof
like real life marketeers.
This would possibly work for sites that
create thousands of low profit pages,
but many of the spam pages are not neccessarily
low profit. Many spammers are creating thousands of high profit pages.
For example, if the spammer charge
their customers.25/click for a top 10 listing
and get 5000 clicks a month, $10/year or.25/keyword/year isn't going to slow them
down much as they'll just target the high
traffic keywords and ignore the rest (which they pretty much do already anyways).
.25 per keyword per year. Yeah Right!! You obviously
aren't that familiar with the PPC (Pay
Per Click) industry. Google and overture(yahoo) both charge a minimum of.10 per keyword per click with some keywords costing upwards
of $7 PERCLICK. Search engine placement is
big money with many companies spending in
the 5 and 6 figures PER MONTH for placement.
So unless google/overture lower their rates low
enough to make it unprofitable for the search engine spammers (and likewise unprofitable for themselves), there will always be someone trying to sell placement cheaper than overture/google.
Note that dell's restocking fee is ONLY
for Software and Peripherals.
Hardware doesn't have a restocking fee.
I've returned systems AND parts to dell without
a fee. Besides, IMHO, a restocking fee is reasonable, but refusing to take it back is not.
Maybe so, but this still smells of BS.
It has tons of technobabble and a very
far out scenerio. In all honesty it sounds
like something my friends and I would think
up if we were bored and wanted to submit
an unbelievable story to slashdot just to see
what would happen. Even on the off chance that
it is true, this ranks right up there with
many of the "fix my specific problem" posts
that should be avoided. Maybe it's just me,
but shouldn't ask slashdot be about general
issues that affect more than a single person.
It looks like they are making a regular
three image coin and gold/silver
three-image coins, and If I'm reading the
site correctly, the regular three-image
coin will not be worth any more than a
regular 10 pound piece. Does anyone know
if the regular three-image coin is going to
be mass-produced for general circulation?
It's rare enough that I've never seen any, and I would personally pay a couple bucks to have
some just as a conversation piece if nothing else, so yes it would be worth something, regardless. My guess is that it would probably be worth quite a bit.
Does anyone have any experience with:
http://www.scanalert.com/, They apparently
check your system on a monthly basis for
security holes, etc... I have no idea how thorough they are, but at less than $200/month,
the price is right.
My experience has been just the opposite.
I never had any problems with my wrists
until I started using my laptop full time.
Since then I have not been able to do
anything to fix my tendonitis. I do believe
that touchpads are better for your wrists
than mice though, and in all honesty, I got the
laptop and started having problems when I switched from part time to full time programming, which is probably the real root of the problem.
I personally would be happy if they could
just make a dvd that was more durable.
I have had more problems with dvds than
I ever did with VHS. I've had skips, freezes,
audio and video getting out of sync, etc...
I would prefer a system that was the current
resolution, but included redundant data and
good error correcting and maybe a permanent
protective case. Something that would survive
a small child would be ideal. VHSs are far
superior to DVDs when it comes to durability.
Walmart and other retail stores have started selling phones that you can buy at the register. This might be the best bet for a short stay as you don't have to talk to the carrier, etc... It also has the added advantage of being more free/anonymous, as you don't have to sign anything.
Since when was $160 a "cheap bastard"? I personally don't know a single person in my circle of friends or extended family that spent more than $160 on a non-spouse this year.
It is fairly easy to upgrade a
mandrake system without taking it offline.
I have a system that went from mandrake 8.2
to mandrake 9.2 without going offline.
If you point urpmi to the newest distro
and do an urpmi --auto-select, it will
upgrade all the packages that have changed since
the last disto.
I do hope you realize that is a
satire site, even though personally
I would consider signing a petition like that.
Following the money is the only way to
solve the problem. Most US customers are
not going to mail cash to korea, but entering
a credit card number is easy (i'm not saying
it's smart). So the easiest way to block
spam is to force VISA/MASTERCARD to disable accounts used to bill for spam.
With hundreds of laws in multiple states/countries, what is the easiest way
to find out what is legal in all of them
and what is not legal. It would seem to me
that some large mailing lists (like slashdot's
mailing list) could easily exceed 10000 emails
in 24 hours.
What is the best way to play it safe without
having to read 50+ laws?
The biggest problem I see is what type of
software requires pretesting? If I include
javascript on my webpage do I need to get
my webpage preapproved? If you say webpages
are exempt, they what about full blown
web applications that are written in java and/or
javascript. It would be next to impossible
to decide when something switches from a "macro"
to a "program" because there are applications that cover the entire spectrum.
Actually, it doesn't even need to be
that complex. Most books include
the title on every page. For instance
do a search for "ender's game". And notice
that amazon convienently shows an extract
of every 5th page. +/- 5 pages gives you
the whole book with very little work.
imho, that is a bit of a problem.

Now, I could go for http://google.com/ going to mobile.google.com, but requiring everyone with a domain to buy a second domain would be idiotic.

A quick search on ebay shows that authentic bills are worth quite a bit with most selling for over $20, so yes, collectors do apparently want them.
