I see a lot of gaming companies trying to DRM their stuff. As much as i like halflife 2, portal, and team fortress 2... i just have that feeling that one day they aren't going to have steam and my games wont work anymore.

The reason is because they can't afford to buy healthy food, go to the doctor, insurance on property, etc. Why? B/c of two reasons.

    a. OK, they are scum and don't try to get by. They cheat the system.

    b. They try to work but are getting fucked by their company. Getting paid crap.

    c. They pay a relatively huge amount of taxes when they buy things than any rich person pays out of their money. I mean, think of it like this. You are poor, and you pay 10 percent tax on food. You have zero dollars saved at the end of the month, so this 10 percent hurts bad. Or you are mega rich, and you pay 1,000,000 dollars in tax a year. But you have 50 million stashed away. You don't even notice that 1 million being gone relative to the little guy.

Scary report http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d08957.pdf (i just started on it), but the gist seems to be:

Step 1: I'm going to start a company.
    Step 2: I make 100,000 dollars profit.
Step 3: I pay myself 100,000 dollars salary.
Step 4: I didn't make any profit, so I pay no taxes.

Obviously some of the steps are done in a sneaky fashion, but broken down that's what happens. A similar thing happened with one of those big financial bank type companies that just got bailed out here in the US... they paid a bunch of huge million dollar "bonuses" right before they went bankrupt. How fucking convenient. And the stock holders got screwed.

Companies will screw people over in most cases. I don't trust them. Never did.

But thankfully it's going to be really hard for this to ever work well on humans. Some reasons were mentioned earlier... memories are stored in different places, fragmented, etc. And I wonder just how easy it would be to have humans recall the memory they want to erase. Seriously, I'm a parent, and the only thing I really worry about them seeing are some commercials. After all, sex and violence on TV are (hopefully) not going to affect my kid too much... but I notice that advertising does sadly have an effect on lots of people. I mean, advertising and marketing is there for a reason. They don't portray their product as make believe (even though it is in a sense), instead they try to make it as real as possible.

I'm talking about junkfood, softdrinks, fast food, alcohol, prescription drugs, cheating on people/divorce being the norm (whoops, that's more TV shows than commercials), etc. etc. etc. I don't want my kid seeing much of this crap, and my options are pretty much throw away all TVs or let my kids be exposed to this stuff. Not that easy of a choice to be honest.

On the one hand I'd like to think my wife's and my influence would override some of the crap they see and that our kids will have enough sense to think for themselves. But the other side of me thinks that if America is in a state of everybody getting overweight, taking pills, and getting divorced more often than not... well... the odds are against any kid out there. And no offense to the ladies, but females seem to have a greater tendency to allow self-confidence issues cloud their thinking and believing the popular opinion, which is what commercials pretend to sell.
