I've lost count of the number of viruses that have been caught by AVG and missed by Norton... they only seem to push updates every few days which leave a huge propogation time for the viruses.
Just this week I had an instance of Norton physically corrupting a file.. Sometimes I wonder if they test their software at all.
I think you can't compare it to the original (IMO it should *not* have been called BSG) as it's a completely different story... apart from the blowing up of the worlds at the beginning (which wasn't even shown - they started after this) they have no common elements.
I really liked the old series... it was cheap trash, but it didn't try to take itself too seriously - it was just *fun* to watch.
Whilst I agree BG isn't really science fiction in the traditional sense, it's going a bit far to say that story lines should be an excuse for space battles.
A good story will always have depth... you'll empathise with the characters, maybe see a bit of yourself in them. The *point* of science fiction is the science of course, which is why it attracts the geek audience... we immerse ourselves in the world so much we can often work out how to solve the problem ourselves before the main characters do.
Never ending space battles would get a bit dull... you need other things like cool new tech, aliens with funny quirks, etc. - all the things that geeks are in to.
I think this is part of why I hated it so much. It seemed to be trying to play to an American audience with American president, elections, even 9/11 references. Those just switched me off... get enough of that on the news channels. I watch scifi to get away from politics, not to have my nose rubbed in it.
(Oops went against the slashdot groupthink... bye bye karma).
I disagree. Sci-Fi is about technology - it's what gives it its name.
Good writing is about people, but Sci-Fi is the setting... Some of us prefer people to be flying around in spaceships with things that go 'woosh' rather then on horses with pistols. That's why I don't watch westerns (which are also about people).
It could easily be doing both the first and third... the second really isn't a meaningful description of anything.
OTOH to be accelerating it'd require an input of force even if it was only changing direction. At that speed I doubt the gravitational force of the stars on the edge of the galaxy is enough to do much to it.
Sliders first series was an interesting concept, then they decided to start changing the cast. Now they've got rid of Quinn which is just stupid. Oh and they just *had* to bring in some badguys.
Didn't mind Andromeda at the start but I'm really not sure about the latest series... seems a little light on storyline (they've dumbed it down and it wasn't exactly university level plot in the first place!)
SG1 is on its way downhill and should be killed while it's still vaguely good... I'd hate to see it go the way of Star Trek (see!! I'm On-topic!!).
Can't stand BSG... It's so bad I just can't even stand to watch it. Maybe it's a US/European thing - we didn't 'get' Firefly or that other thing I forget the name of (the one with the muppets) over here either....
Atlantis is improving (at last) but nowhere near the peak that SG1 got to (it's gone downhill since).
The biggest problem with SGA is all the aliens speak perfect english, and they've not come up with a storyline to explain this.. in SG1 it was assumed that everyone was speaking gould unless they were on earth, so that's OK. In SGA they've gone to another galaxy and there's no excuse... few few people can speak ancient (and that's a dead language anyway so it's probably impossible to be fluent in it).
Electrical power isn't the issue - they have that even in the 3rd world (most of it anyway).
Internet could be an issue, as mobile phones are use mostly (it's not cost effective to dig a cable when mobile technology and microwave transmitters can do it much cheaper).
Which is why any lawyer will advise you to pretend patents don't exist until you're actually accused of infringing one.
If it can be proven that you knew a patent existed you get triple damages. Having a policy of actively avoiding finding out information about them is the only defense.
Seems relatively cheap too for a commercial app (which is MySql's problem - they charge 300 euros per client - which is about 10 times the current projected cost of the app in my case).
$1420 per developer seems fair... that's only $14 per customer if you sell 100 copies.
By default the mac only checks for security updates once a week... change it to daily at least. There's been 3 or 4 this week.
I'm just so disappointed that OSX is so unstable - I know of dozens of ways to lock it solid... took me less than 20 minutes after getting the mac to crash it so badly I had to power cycle. after reading slashdot (yeah I know) I'd assumed it was pretty good... I've even given up on the aiport and gone wired because it's basically useless for me - the wlan doesn't initialised until you've logged in, and all my users are remote - catch 22.
NAV isn't exactly the best AV out there...

As long as it's not company policy ie. each employee that uses it is installing it for personal use, it's free.
I worked for a company that refused to pay for AV, and we all had it on our desktops, except the managers.
They didn't run any of that in the UK.. they in fact started with episode 2, which I thought was a bit bizarre.

How is that a troll?
The camera work was so amateur it was distracting.
One of the major reasons I gave up on it (the incomprehsible script didn't help).

Except the star presumably has a huge amount of gravitational force, observation the surface of the star will be affected by that.
So you're probably right about the position, but it's a debatable point about the star itself.
No problems?
How about no drivers, which means VGA graphics, no network, PIO disk access...
Find if you're running dos edit on it. Sucks if you want it to do some real work.
Or maybe you're the lucky one that is running the exact same configuration as the MS developer so thinks it works fine?

No way in hell they'll get 3,000,000 people donating to this.
They'll be lucky to get 3,000.
There's a huge difference between the cost of a PC and $80 million.
That's the kind of money that could make a real difference. And they're going to spend it on a TV show.
I mean, WTF???

I have a set of lookup tables on my asterisk server which do this.
:)
Of course the cheapest route is always analogue, so it's not a great advert for VOIP
Not sure I'd want my mobile phone to link to it though.. that's a separate number that only a few trusted people know.

FFS it's a big barren rock. Who cares what gets done with it?
I've been called a treehugger myself in the past, but some people take the biscuit.

ActiveX is inherently insecure, so no sane browsers implement it.
It seems IDN is also inherently insecure. It should be ditched and a better standard developed (wtf is wrong with UTF8 anyway?)
It looks like gnome hasn't changed much since the 2.0 release when I abandoned it (lots of reasons... none of which have changed apparently).
What's with the Windows 3.1 look anyway?

Alan Cox celebrating?
I guess it *could* happen every day.. not sure he'd get much coding done though.
Ahh so it's an interactive porn device.
Why didn't they say so?
