Oh my god, shut up. You've clearly never had to write code to order, quickly. Yeah, just write your gui from scratch for every application. Roll your own socket server and communication protocol, too. Heck, if they want data analysis make sure you write your own stats package, too. Why do you want to reinvent the wheel on every project? I can understand bespoke suits, watches, cars. Heck, even Swiss watches aren't completely hand crafted. The movements are produced in factories custom designed to do nothing else. But anyway, software isn't decoration -- it's engineering. Your way is the stupid, expensive, error prone way.

People don't seem to understand it's not the Java language that matters, it's the JVM. The JVM has had over a decade of development by now; it's very stable, and very fast. A lot of great languages have been developed that require it. You may hate Java, but what about groovy? What about Scala? I don't want to see them go away.

Completely disagree. We run very large pg databases and the maintenance is minimal. Mysql is such an inferior product. As for Java, I don't care about the language per se, but there's a lot of good things written for the JVM that I would hate to see disappear. Can't IBM just put their balls to the wall and take over development of OpenJDK? They produced a great JIT long before Sun got around to it; they have the capability...

That's bullshit. Nothing was happening. The officer chose to "reach down" as it were and make an issue. It was the officer's actions in fact, that lead to people getting killed. It if would not be assault if it happened to a citizen walking the street, it cannot be assault simply because the officer says it is. Power tends to corrupt; here we see that is has corrupted. If you don't assert your rights, the police are certainly not going to do it for you.

The more likely it is that the desktop OS is dead, i.e. the desktop is used only for communicating with servers and data providers in one form or another, the MORE I want that OS to be linux. Because it doesn't dictate how I should do the communication. I can use whatever browser I like, modified the way I like it. I can use the freaking command line for christsake. As more power becomes available to me through the cloudwebclusterfuck, I want the ability to interact with it in powerful ways. And that means linux.
