"God I hate working here. One IT person for every 10 proper workers - that can't be right.:p"
Try working here... One IT person for 50 employees. I am a busy man... Wait a second what am I doing on/.?
I love my Jeep. It is a true drivers car, not in the sense you are thinking. When you drive an old Jeep (Mine just turned 20) you have to drive it every second. If you don't you will find yourself parked in a ditch. I wouldn't trade any new car. In fact I sold my BMW 325i Convertible to make space for the Jeep.
I have found the best way is to do ALL your research before you walk into the store. (Most sales drones don't know anything anyway.) Walk into the store with a printout from their webstore of exactly what you want. Walk up to sales drone, hand them the printout and say "I want one of these."
When they try to sell you the extended warranty. Let them get through their spiel, then firmly but politely say "No."
I have only once had a pushy sales drone not respond to this system. I turned and walked up to the next sales person and asked if he wanted to sell me what I wanted. The look on the first drones face was priceless.
Now that I think of it, it wasn't a dumb term, it was an old X terminal, and I got it out of that same dumpster several years before. It was a fun project to get it working with my Linux box. Too slow to be really useful, but fun to do anyway.
Like most geeks, Computer hardware just seems to be magnetically attracted to me. When I bought my house, I decided I needed to get rid of a lot of my old useless hardware. In the end I threw out 15 desktops, 3 old craptops, and 1 dumb terminal. I put everything beside the dumpster. It was all gone by the next morning. I hope someone got a lot of use out of all that old hardware.
I am a trek fan and I am intrigued by the new movie.
I am a trek fan, but I probably won't be after the new movie.
The is a new movie?
Shattner is my God!
"The vast majority of the market is uninterested in Apple hardware."
You could be wrong there. Since Vista came out, I have found many people have decided to give this Apple thing a try. I did myself after many years of being an Apple hater. I bought a MacBook. My brother who is completely nontechnical and just wants to surf the net, do email, and sync his blackberry, just bought a MacBook. A good friend who does Java development bought a MacBook. My mother is thinking about buying an iMac. About half the people I work with have bought Macs. The list goes on and on.
How about we all stop thinking that we have better ideas than the guys who built these incredible pieces of machinery?
I mean the designers built two rovers that had to survive a launch from earth, months in deep space, a bouncy landing on another world, and then operate correctly with a 10 minute (Or longer) radio delay.
That is an incredible accomplishment! Then for it to continue to operate for YEARS! I am in awe of the designers.
Now here on/. we have a bunch of armchair engineers believing they could do better?
Do you honestly believe that the same people who built these incredible machines didn't think of a solar panel wiper? A can of compressed air? A fan? A compressor?
To the designers: If any of you are reading this. My hat is off to you. Well done!
I have a much more fun idea.
1. Walk in with a stack of knoppix cds, and some super glue. Have a friend distract the sales drone, and I think you can guess the rest.
2. ??????
3. Profit.
How about .txt

I thought that was how M$ created Windoze Vista.

No, more like the small American flags people but July 4th.
Like most things in Canada.
Signed, a proud Canadian.

I replaced all my ceilings with glass, and filled my attic with fireflies.
There is no money in fixing it.

I even saw a Zune once.
I think what the OP meant was Apple makes money on hardware. MS makes money on software.

Blah, Blah, blah.
I agree to do whatever the hell I want to do with this software.
Blah, blah, blah.
Agree?
Apples do NOT cost twice what an equivalent PC costs. Try doing the math some time. I did, then I bought my Macbook.
