I found your comment to be quite interesting. Not trying to flamebait here, but the notion of the emperor's new clothes only being visible to superior beings got me thinking about religion... Could it be that many of the very religious are just trying very hard to convince themselves that they see the emperor's clothes? The resultant behaviour certainly is in line, specially the apparent atmosphere of holier than thou.
In the short run it has already brought amazing things to the common man. Like stated all over the article, we have space exploration to thank for things like miniaturization, satellites -> {gps, hugely improved weather forecasts} etc. In fact, I'm not sure we'd be having this online discussion without it.
I agree that a good programmer should be able to work with technologies that he/she is uncomfortable with.
However, voicing concerns is often recognizing that the tool is not so good for the job. For example, a few years ago there was blatant overuse of J2EE+XSLT - many complained but grudgingly used what was their companies norm. You're right that in some cases negativeness to technologies unknown can be an indicator of ignorance and imbalance, and I might add also of stubborness and and unwillingness to learn something, out of pure prejudice. Guess what I'm trying to say is that things in this matter aren't necessarily very clear cut.
Why is the parent poster modded troll? It's worth mentioning that both minix and the mach kernel are open source, and both being quite successful naturally inspires others (Microsoft included) to look in this direction.
We all carry lethal alleles? Speak for yourself buddy, I have none of those. Btw, no matter where I look on the interwebs, I simply cannot find a community for my kind. Wont someone please think of the zombies?
Oh come on now, his speaking out is a chance for us to unite in our disgust for someone! Really, there's always at least some defending of Microsoft/MAFIAA/Bush, but none for Jack Thompson. In his defense, I actually can't think of anything except that his theories will be much appreciated in the loony farm:p
While I agree with much of what you're saying, I still don't see any reason why a site like Slashdot couldn't validate xml/dtd correctness of the user input, and respond with a meaningful error description when that's the case. If the response says that the tag opened before some text is never closed, it wouldn't be that hard for your regular submitter to correct the error and resubmit.

I don't think that any large scale collapse will happen because of cheaper/better solutions. It only means that more people are able to accomplish more things, cheaper/faster/better. The same will happen when we'll finally get insanely cheap energy (hopefully within the next 3-5 decades so I'll be around to witness:). All the collapse that will happen is that antiquated business can't force-feed bad stuff down our throats any more imho.
Zombie survival guide? As an eternally uninformed underworld creature, could you please provide one with directions on where to find this sort of treasure?
And how come us zombies are never mentioned in these discussions on intelligent design and evolution? We are both more intelligently designed and more evolved than old homo sapiens (IMHO), you insensitive clods!
The man was mentally ill - not evil. Let's hope your mental health will always prevent you from saying regretful things.
Weed-killers? If these become too common, then, goodbye cruel world :(
Not entirely offtopic, but completely offcontinent!

Of course they're biased. But that means nothing if you can't argue against what those people said.

This is a Microsoft bashing thread. There's OLPC bashing in the article before this one, if you're interested.
New year's resolution: resist the urge to mod troll when begged for. Time now, 21:43. Woohoo - record time for resolution breaking.

Offtopic? From the bloody summary: "become a beginner again like making yourself shoot basketball left-handed".

This was actually modded +5: sad but true, in a parallel universe nearby
You're next incarnation will be as one of my kind. Be happy about it, zombies are the pinnacle of evolution!
Good riddance! They'll never want my rotten dark meat :p
Just wait until you send the first zombie to space, I'll be out of food in no time!
Ah, thank you. So many steps... But no: Step Nine: ??? Step Ten: Profit!!! Note to self: must not nibble on andphi, at least save him till last

So, you're tired of the topic. Was anyone forcing you to read this thread?

And what about us Zombies? Why, we have our undead consciousness too!
