This might be OK if it weren't for the unseemly trend that has these boards being increasingly comprised of other executives/CEOs. That having been said, the "best talent" argument is a myth. It's merely a way to justify the upwardly spiraling pressure that this group can continue to put on its own compensation.

Certainly not the government. Our "trust" has recently netted us one economic disaster, and one industrial catastrophe. I realize that the current method isn't optimal, but he who has the information, has the control. That having been said, I'd like to retain as much control as possible, especially when it comes to information that can be easily stored, profiled, shared, etc. One of *anything*, I'd argue, is a bad choice. I don't think this was missed at all. It's like any of the other "defects" that have showed up in Apple products. I'm tempted to believe that Apple knew quite well about this, but decided to go with it anyway because a) fixing it would involve removing some of the "sleek" factor and b) they knew that there would be such mass hysteria over acquiring the new product that it wouldn't matter - at first. It's all about taking calculated risks.

That having been said, it's precisely this attitude that destroyed my fan loyalty several years ago- I simply got tired of being bent over by Apple's marketing prowess. I still buy an Apple product every now and then, but the days of drooling all over myself at the mere mention of a new Apple product are LONG gone.

Speaker phones are a truly annoying mainstay of a modern office environment. I think part of the annoyance comes from the frequency range, since they often sound like loud transistor radios. Another part of the problem is that there is no volume normalization, so the phone is volume is often turned up to accommodate the softest voice - which means that the loudest voice is often VERY loud. Funny how they can compress the crap out of music audio (making it sound like crap), but they can't do jack with noise that comes from a phone (which sounds like crap anyway).

It's not just purchasing the movie that's at issue here. All of the movie's assets will also be available. Try to get something like that from Big Media, Inc. Other issues you haven't considered:

The projects undertaken by the Blender Foundation drive the development of Blender. The version 2.5 release that will accompany the Sintel movie features a complete overhaul of the UI and event system, as well as a host of new features.

There were at least three sprints that involved community participation - a request for a logo design, the creation of 3D content, and some refinement of the main characters. This is not something you will find with a commercial studio.

In summary, you're not just paying for "a movie" - you're supporting a different, completely open environment with respect to its creation.
