  3. Re:Hmmm on Scientists Identify a Potentially Universal Mechanism of Aging · · Score: 1

1)Those normal signs of aging can be attributed to the ongoing damage. For example the DNA that you have now is probably not 100% the same as the one you were born with. Cells have mechanisms that can sometimes repair DNA damage, but this can't catch all problems. In some cells, DNA has been shown to degrade each time a cell is divided, like some sort of counter the number of cell division is not unlimited, that may be the reason why some animals live longer and some like dogs have shorter lives. 2)Some might say the accumulation of damage is important in evolution. Otherwise there would just be replicating molecules and no real life. I agree that it is probably advantageous for the ecosystem to constantly renew itself. An organism that can live 1000 years would probably need to formidable against an organism that can have millions of generations in 1000 years. Longetivity is probably not that big an advantage in the natural world.

I don't believe that the reason that women don't go into technical fields is because of lack of interest. Actually for hard science you find more women scientists than men. From my experience women are better at discerning unhealthy lifestyles and have better time management. One thing CS isn't is healthy, it's the type of career at an office where even when you're not working you're mind is always constantly going. For a lot of men, this is acceptable, for women, not so much. As for your example of nursing, nurses can leave work at work and go home and relax. Sure I can agree that maybe men and women have different interests but I think the main reason is that it's a lifestyle choice.

Feel free to ignore the second part. The success of bipedalism is evident in humans, four legged animals are obviously faster so human hunters can't compete in that way. But bipedal humans are able to maintain consistent speed for a long periods of time while quadrupeds are only able to maintain their high speeds for short bursts. Essentially humans are able to chase down animals and use their weapons on them. Wheels are great and efficient on flat and level surfaces, but I mountain bike and I can tell you that any incline or rough surfaces increases energy use substantially. Say you're standing on a pothole, on a wheeled vehicle you would need to generate enough force to lift the whole contraption in one go to get out of it. With a bipedal unit, all you need to do is shift your weight to one leg and generate enough force to lift the other and continue.
