I don't think you guys get it. The astronauts are sad because the entire thinking of the American elite is "do with less" - at least for the regular people. When I was younger I used to think: how did those guys build the Hoover dam back 1930's, how did they go to the moon in 1960's, how did they go to the bottom of the ocean (Mariana's Trench) in the 1960's, how did we build the tallest skyscrapers. Now we do none of that. There's no "can-do" attitude. There's only what can "I get for free from the government".
Oh knock it off countsodoku. I have many friends that served in the military and they love their personal guns and they don't shoot anybody. It's called a metaphor. Just words. And I'm a conservative that programs computers for a living. It's quite true that liberals are pretty poor on the second amendment. And it's people like you that help to inflame the public discussion. Where do liberals get off demonizing everybody that disagrees with them? It's obvious that the country is about half/half liberals vs conservative. And yet too many liberals truly, truly believe that conservatives don't have legitimate viewpoints. It's just unacceptable
Silly liberal slashdotters. Your flawed argument is that is a good thing to rachet up CAFE standards (Big Gov controls) because it forces us to become more efficient. Indeed it's a good thing that the price of oil is going up - for the same reason. But this hurts the automotive, airline, and trucking industries very much. Oh you don't care. Well maybe we should triple the price of computers - to discourage their use. And triple the price of your internet connection (all by gov fiat). By your logic this would be great. Discourage use, less footprint, save energy.
Why does Slashdot encourage these people (by modding them interesting) with the endless Bush-bashing and quips about terrorist activity. Just let one of their smart-aleck, pasty-face asses get hit by al-quieda and the boys and we'll see their stupid comments stop. And maybe they'll take defending this country a little more seriously...
Hooray Moryath. A voice of reason in the Slashdot universe. Exactly 100% correct. Teachers should teach. Period. Keep your leftist/communist views to yourself. No ones gives a crap. Stay out of my way and let me get to class. And keep your stupid flyers off my car. I don't give a damn about any of your stupid "causes". If you do care then they should be distributed in a non-aggressive way. On either side of the political/religious spectrum. So I applaud the universities. Their motto should be teach! teach !teach!
Right on l0ungeb0y. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has wondered why almost all movie and book futures (as well as the dreamy piece) are so bleak. It's so obvious that we are far better off in 2008 compared to 1908, 1808, 1708 etc. I can only conclude weakness and self-fear that manifests as pessimism and bleakness. A bunch of self-important lightweights. And a disproportionate amount of these personality types are writing the books and making the movies which helps to shape popular culture. What a shame. By my calculations the US GDP will be 250 trillion in 100 years (assuming 3% growth). If you can't build a happy culture with 250 trillion shame on you. You don't deserve to be happy...
The point is, especially for the scientific community, to report the truth. I don't care about your supposedly high moral stance. And your caring for people or children more than me. Or your ends justify your means for exaggerating the numbers. Frankly, I'm tired of it. All I want is the truth. Did 400 people die? 800? 10,000? Just tell me what the research shows and I will make up my own mind. I know that sounds scarey to a lot of left-wingers, but we can do it. We can ingest the facts, weigh them against other ills if we take a different course, and come to a conclusion.
Bravo. Absolutely correct. It's amazing to me that people have to keep making these arguments. It's basic economics 101. Well, at least it would be, if you had enough good teachers in this country that weren't so enamored with socialism. I have just one wrinkle to add. The above argument only applies to money and effeciency and not to 'total human happiness'. For example, can a person be happier by not always specializing - at least not one hundred percent of the time. Say by building their own house or furniture or sewing their own dresses. I believe they can. Bottom line: capitalism and specialization for the nation as a whole, with individuals stepping "off the grid" from time to time to become more generalist and rounded.
Say what you will about Murdoch (I like him - I'm a conservative), he's a helluva businessman. Although more needs to be done, he's thankfully changed the face of news in this country.
Pick and Universe also are organized like this. I've been programming them for 20 years and I agree with what you say, but nobody else does. The straight relational-database model just dominates - even object storage doesn't make a tiny dent in the market. I don't get it.
Wow are you a carbonocentric prick. I guarantee you there are hordes of silicon-based aliens shopping at wal-mart (when we're sleeping). How do you think they got so big...
Excellent analysis lexta2000. Especially with HRC leading the Dems. Half the country immediately dislikes her. Should be an 'upset' win for the R's. It's gonna have the MSM and euro-elites sulking. Ha Ha
It always makes sense to conserve, especially if you can do the same amount of work. What doesn't make sense is the obsession with solar-power. It simply isn't feasible to power our world economy without enormous advances in solar technology. Nice for the future maybe, but not here yet. Heck I love to run everything with unlimited fusion power - but it's not here yet either. This doesn't mean we shouldn't pursue both of these technologies, but we must be realistic. I would say pursue a three-pronged strategy:
Short-term: Develop more oil, clean-burning coal, conservation, and fission (next 10 years)
Mid-term: More solar and wind (next 20 years)
Long-term: Fusion (next 30 years)
Very eye-opening your experience in Japan. Seems like I remember many 'experts' going on and on in the early 90's about the dominance of the Japan economics model. Hogwash I thought at the time and I think that now. This credit-card stuff you commented on is just another example of the greatness of the American model. As usual, I don't think Americans appreciate this enough as I see endless griping on this site. I, for one, am glad I live here.
Bull, the chemistry sets were dumbed down long before 9-11. Anti-terrorism has nothing to do with it. It's all about chem-set manufacturers getting sued (by armies of trial lawyers) and the liberal nanny state "protecting" our kids.

Excellent, they should be deporting a lot more professors from the UK. Anti-English and anti-American cowards.

What's really known to be invalid is the WaPo and 60 minutes investigative journalism. :)

Vote Kucinich and drive them even nuttier!!!

Good will always triumph over evil because evil consumes itself...

And I can't remember the last time I didn't listen to a ClearChannel station. That's the point - obviously people have different tastes.
