  1. The fish is the purpose on Glowing Fish are First Genetically Engineered Pets · · Score: 1
You know, this has gone too far. Genetic engineering just for the heck of it? What purpose do
    [sic] a glowing fish have?

I feel that you are being quite short-sighted by posing this question. To ask a question like this is akin to asking why people hang up Escher prints on their walls or why programmers go home after work and work on their own pet projects.

What purpose does a glow-in-the-dark pet have?

What purpose does a Siamese cat have? It's animal breeding just for the heck of it.

What purpose does a photograph exposition have? It's taking pictures just for the heck of it.

What purpose does a symphony have? It's music just for the heck of it.

This is exactly why Nintendo is, in my opinion, doing the right thing by staying away from on-line play. If only 1% of your potential install base is using the on-line capabilities for a game, why bother supporting it at all?

While I can appreciate console manufacturers trying to attract the PC gamer with the lure of online multiplay, I'd much rather sit down with three other friends (or more, if you rotate out people) and play Super Smash Bros.: Melee, or TimeSplitters 2, or even The Bouncer.

It could definitely happen, because the release of Final Fantasy VII gave the PlayStation a huge surge in market share, simply because people bought PSXs in order to play it. I'm not sure if it will happen this time, though. The odds of Square-Enix licensing their star franchise to a non-Japanese hardware console are next to none. Think of the backlash there would be!

Television shows, and more generally, companies are not, I repeat, NOT citizens!

I agree with you on the first point, but disagree on the second. An incorporated business has many of the rights that a citizen has: it can own property, hold a bank account, and can sue (or be sued) as its directors see fit.

You're completely ignoring the reality of the situation: Percy knew that he had Round-Up Ready crop, and he willfully continued to propagate it even though he didn't ever buy the seeds. That's thievery, regardless of the draconian policies surrounding it.

If you don't agree to their terms and conditions, don't buy the product, yes. So when you find out the product is in your field, don't continue growing them.

  13. Re:Moot point on Fight Woodworking Piracy: Add EULA Restrictions · · Score: 1

This actually affects fewer people than you'd think. Most farmers purchase their own seed year after year in order to insure that they have pure breeding stock. Plant breeding on the user end is not an exact science, and homologous recombination happens quite often. It takes years and years to obtain a pure breeding stock through seed saving, and even then it's through the time-consuming process of selecting the plants with traits you want from a field of thousands.

Seed saving is generally only the norm in third world agricultural economies--like India and Africa--where the retention and sharing of seed is a part of the culture. Since Monsanto hasn't made real in-roads into this market yet, it is entirely possible that they may relax their policies with regard to seed saving.

  14. Re:One excellent design element on Sony Unveils PSX Details, Pricing · · Score: 1

I agree with you: despite Sony's attempt at making it more consumer-driven, there's no good reason why the controllers should plug into the back of the unit. Surely there's enough room in the front for them, isn't there?

If they're worried about having an exposed socket (because you know it'll still only have two controller inputs), they could easily make a flip-up door to conceal it.

This is even worse than the Dreamcast controllers having the cord coming out of the side facing the user.

Two years ago I picked up a Sheaffer Prelude ballpoint pen at Staples, and I haven't looked back. It's relatively inexpensive ($30 Canadian), but mine has a very nice deep metallic blue colour that makes it really stand out. It also has a heft that I haven't been able to find in any other ballpoint pen. It's like writing with authority.
