  1. Re:Did your congressman do his duty? on Senate Passes 4-Year Re-Up of Patriot Act Provisions · · Score: 1

There was an article on Gizmodo earlier this week talking about why politicians lose sight of what is good and what those that voted for them want... it's just the way our brains work. All of us think we would make a great leader or politician, but once you have that POWER, that ALL ENGROSSING POWER!!! COURSING THROUGH YOUR VEINS!!! well, we have all seen what the power of the dark side does to everyone. It's a basic concept that many movies use, because it's true. When we become powerful in our own eyes, those that are not powerful become less important, or not important at all, and let's face it. The Patriot Act gives MORE POWER to the government... and politicians are the government. It's like lightning from your fingers... what sort of Sith lord would they be without lightning fingers? And they aren't going to give up this power either. See also, the Emperor coming to power over the Senate, then not giving that power up. Really, if you think of it, Star Wars is/was a satirical view of our government. Only instead of one Emperor, we vote a new Emperor in every 4-8 years. By the time they get to that point, the dark side has already corrupted them with power. So really, ickleberry is correct. It's in our nature to uncontrollably become the shiny new futuristic looking frying pan. It can't be helped.

How else are they going to get people's reactions to it if they don't face them with it? Just hating it for the sake of hating change isn't really good feedback to them. Don't just hate it because it's not what you are used to, respond with good criticism that they can use to make it better. Let's face it, as much as some people love them some Gnome or KDE, those desktop environments, even after all these years, just aren't as tight as Windows or OSX, and the desktop environment is a key ingredient in bringing an OS to the masses. We scream at the top of our lungs that we want Linux to become a mainstream OS for everyone to use (mainly so that hardware vendors will start writing drivers, and software companies will start supporting it with their software) but some major change has to happen before ordinary people are going to accept it. It's pretty obvious from the other operating systems mentioned, that the shiny sparkly animated desktop effects, and rounded, transparent, evenly spaced, colorful desktop environments are what the people first see and are attracted to. I think Ubuntu saw this, and they already had Unity for the netbook, and thought, "hrm, this desktop is much shinier and fancier than our desktop environment on the standard release, perhaps we should work on this as our main desktop environment across the board so we aren't maintaining multiple ones, and possibly release a more likeable look and feel to the masses." Let's face it, Gnome 3/Unity/OSX/Windows 7 are the way we are moving. You can only attract so many mice with an old piece of cheese.

I like it :o) It has its drawbacks, but aside from any bugs and issues with other parties' drivers, it seems pretty well put together, and I'd feel safe setting my parents free on it, yet if you know where to go, you can be a power user too. I think it's mainly aimed at the people who just want their daily apps available to them. I haven't seen this level of hatred at something that can easily be changed by the user, since Coke released New Coke... OMG! I know I can still buy Coke Classic, but I ****ing hate the whole company because they released this other product that isn't what I'm used to. What do you mean it's still early in development? I don't care! I don't like change!

And the Humble Bundle is more or less, children's games. Not knocking them at all, I've purchased all three, but I get them for my niece and nephew. They are not at all comparable to Half-Life 2, Battlefield (series) or any other ~$50 game available. I have yet to play the new Frozen bundle, but they just don't appear to be of the same high-dollar drawing game play caliber as the big companies put out. If you want a good comparison to the first two bundles, I'd go with Angry Birds, which we can see the average user is willing to pay $2.99 for...

For the greater good? If they can get Unity working smoothly by 12.04's LTS release, Ubuntu could be a great, solid platform for the every Joe user, and deep down inside, the Power user would also be able to do his work. I argued this with a friend who too is afraid of change because he's used to Gnome 2. He complained that they hid the "nuts and bolts" of the OS so that the power user functionality had to be hunted down. I argued that they hid it so that the normal user wouldn't be bothered with it, or presented with the complexity of it. Can you say Mac OS?

Well, the problem with presidents is that by the time they get to the stage where they can be president, they are corrupt, and really, do we have the power to vote a good president in, or are we basically stuck voting whichever president promises us candy, and which will then take it away once they are in office? The very lowest levels of politics are where most of our power is, to vote in good people, before they have become corrupted by the power of politics, but sadly, by the time they are in a position to do anything of any significant good, they will be swayed not to, or they will let their idealism of not necessarily what's right to do, but what can be done first, or what might shake up things, get in the way. And yes, I believe everyone can agree that the US is a Republic... We have a Senate, we have a high Chancellor... and there ARE "Sith lords" influencing things in Washington. I guess in the end though, we are starting to see some "transparency" in government. We are really getting to see how they like to play ball lately.
