The online retailer spent $54 million on technology and content expenses in its third quarter, ended Sept. 30, compared with $71 million in the year-ago quarter, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The reduction was primarily because of Amazon's "migration to a Linux-based technology platform that utilizes a less-costly technology infrastructure, as well as general price reductions for data and telecommunication services due to market overcapacity," according to the statement. (Emphasis mine.)
So a lot of it was due to the move to Linux, but a significant portion of it was also due to their pipe(s) becoming much cheaper.
Tell me how I upgrade a whole network of machines without doing it by hand on each one if I use Windows Update? Answer: I can't.
BZZZT! Sorry, wrong answer.
If you have many machines that you want to update without using Windows Update through IE on each one, you can go to Corporate Windows Update to grab the appropriate updates, then push them out the next time the users of those machines log on using your group policy.
Jeezus! NTSC has 525 scanlines, PAL has 625 scanlines.
This page has the resolution specifications for damn-near every broadcast standard used today, with the notable exception of SECAM, which is really only used in France.
Not in quantity, it doesn't. Toshiba will happily sell you or I one for $400, but Apple's cost on them, in quantity, is much, much lower than that. That was my original point.
even though the hard drive that powers the iPod costs $400 all by itself
Bullshit. A year ago, I picked up a 20GB IBM Travelstar for under CAD$500 -- about US$325. I'd be surprised if 5GB notebook drives currently sell for more than US$150 at retail, never mind in volume for integration into a product like this!
Another nice thing is that hibernation is transparent since there is only the option for Standby, Shutdown, and Restart when you go to Start/Turn off Computer.
Actually, at the screen with those options, hold Shift and the Standby button turns into a Hibernate button. That's how you hibernate on XP.
What they didn't mention were a few interesting security fixes from bugs in 2.4.12, probably due to the self-imposed DMCA "gag order." Since I am not in the US, I will take the liberty of posting them here:
Wow, talk about waving the red flag in front of the bull!
You, my friend, must have balls the size of tank bearings. My hat is off to you!
I have an Inspiron 7000 with a 15" display, and the hinges started going wonky about 18 months after I got it. I'm not hard on it, either -- it's my baby, so I take good care of it.
Their warranty service is second-to-none, though, IMHO -- if I call them telling them the hinges are dying, they schedule an appointment for me and they're replaced.
About a year and three months ago I purchased a Porsche 944 off of ebay.
I have absolutely nothing against you (heck, I don't even know you), but that sentence alone tells me that you got what you had coming without even needing to read the rest of your post.
For purchases of that magnitude, one would have to be a few sandwiches short of a picnic, so to speak, to make such a purchase via an online auction (except, for example, if purchasing the vehicle from a manufacturer-authorized new-car dealership who was making the sale online).
In my opinion, anything purchased from an online auction site for over $100 should be paid for through a company like Tradenable to avoid being bent over and sodomized with an 80-grit sandpaper dildo by a dishonest seller!
The juxtaposition between this link above and goatse.cx is simply...gaping!
Isn't it just? Unfortunately, conhugeco.org hasn't updated that page since July, and I haven't bothered to change my sig. I assure you, pre-July, it was gaping indeed.

I signed up for a.NET Passport for use with Windows Messenger, using a non-Hotmail address that I hadn't provided to anyone else, ever.
Never had a single spam in it... until two days after I signed up for the Passport (being careful to uncheck the "share my information" boxes) and began using it (only to sign into Windows Messenger).
It has gone from 0 spam/day to 6-8 spam/day, in less than one week.
I've now blackholed that email address and cancelled the Passport. I've also created a new Passport with a poisoned address (passport@DOMAIN.TLD). If I receive spam to it, I'll know those whores sold it off, even though I specifically selected not to have that done.
Being a gearhead myself, especially interested in telecom, I've hunted high and low for a contact who knows his shit. I think you just might be that contact.
Please drop me an email at slashdotNO@SPAMalexburke.ca (remove the NO SPAM, obviously). You would enjoy the same privacy and confidentiality all my other technical contacts at major companies have.
This is an idea I never really thought about for single handed typing input. A very cool idea.
I'm sure that, being geeks, we can certainly appreciate the, umm, usability aspects of single-handed input. (Or single-handed output, depending how you look at the situation.)

I don't like Flash ads, and I don't imagine you do, either. Check out the ZDNet story here.

I think not p0rn... Didn't you notice the "retrieval can be arbitrarily slow" clause?
Well, perhaps it's geriatric porn, then!
John Carmack et al also read and post to Slashdot. :)
You may as well ask for a space shuttle that can fly to pluto in two minutes with no fuel.

HEY! RIAA!! I've Got 2000 MP3's that you can delete! Come and Get Em!! My IP address is 127.0.0.1!
Oh, please! Everyone knows that's loopback. Your real IP address is 127.63.174.221. Didn't think you'd really fool the RIAA, didja?!
At the referenced PDF, page 92 (PDF page 18), there is a duplication: codes 325 and 332. (See what I mean?)
You forgot the flux capacitor! How are you going to turn 1.21 gigawatts of power into time travel without it?!
I mean no disrespect to the creator(s) of SkyOS, but at least they should have been creative with their icon design. See what I mean?
