I own about as many DVD's and still buy them. But I have started buying bluray discs but do not own anything that can play bluray discs.. I rip them and play them on my XBMC.
I have not watched a regular DVD in over 3 years now as well, any new DVD I buy we instantly rip it and put it on my home on demand system.
Why? because I dont have 20 minutes to waste for all the "must watch cant skip" crap in the beginning. I want to watch the movie not the commercials and you are a criminal videos..

Benefits - lower cost to you... cheaper car = lower payment. Lower insurance rates -- significantly lower due to parts being cheap. Lower fuel costs -- as gas goes up your savings goes up.
Makes the car very unattractive to thieves of all type. joyriders want a fast car, getaway car needs to be easy in out and fast. Strip it for parts need to have value.

Honestly if you want a fun cheap car... get a Honda Civic Si coupe. debage it or even put on it the "DX" baseline badge so nobody knows it has the desireable engine in it. you get a car that will not get stolen or even messed with and are quite fun to drive. the 2010 with the aftermarket turbo is a ton of fun.. and still cheaper than any of the midsized econo american cars.
Or an option for people who do not care about performance.
In a drag race the automatic tranny will utterly kick the ass of a manual transmission every time. At the race track the Auto guys are always spanking the Manual guys. their ET's are spooky consistent.

Yes they do. I have yet to see a Windows7 NAS. yet I see a LOT of people that own a NAS that suprisingly all run Linux. In fact I cant find one that does not run linux in one form or another.. and yes they all are horribly managed... no passwords, open 100%....
Plus most families have poorly managed linux routers and firewalls.. although many have changed to VXworks so those get all mismanaged as well.
There's more linux machines out there in the home than Windows machines... you Blu ray player, your TV, they all run linux.
nor does it stop the window link icon overflow that allows code to execute by simply viewing the contents of a folder in explorer.. That bug that has been in windows for over 10 years....

Actually I do expect that. During katrina the troops sent to the area were talking about the possibility of having to kill americans. They are fully ready to drop a minivan full civilians here in the states. And you are a fool if you believe that they wont. Military training does not include "Unless they are americans" clause.

Plus they dont sit there staring at the screen waiting for render to finish.. the only way to speed up render is a renderfarm.. I did this with 4 mac minis.. worked great.
Problem is increasing render speed is only useful if you have a job backlog.. I.E. if you cna render 40% faster so you can get the jobs into the work que faster.
99% of the time there is not a job waiting to be worked on. and even then it's cheaper to buy another older workstation to allow the editor to work on that machine during the 1st machine render..
My old P-4 3.6ghz overclocked and hyperthreading turned off desktop kicks the crud out of most of the quad cores out there for general stuff like internet and basic home use. my 2.6ghz quad core i7 kicks it's butt hard for encoding a bluray or video editing....
The problem is that core speeds still need to get up there. because 90% of the programmers out there are still writing everything single threaded.
Select a single pixle... mouse = easy trackpad = impossible. play a FPS... I'll own you hard on your trackpad. do a lot of pointer movement, photo retouching.... mouse or better yet a pen tablet uttery owns a trackpad....
using only one hand while doing nothing but surfing the net.... Ok the trackpad wins there.
A 12 core MAC is not for the rich uber-idiot that uses it for Facebook. It's for real Graphics work and Video editing. And those people ARE here on slashdot and Therefore the target demographic. Final Cut suite is the best video editing suite out there and giving it 12 cores would make editing that damned abomination called AVCHD better than it is now. Problem is It's priced at a point that all the small guys (Less than $1.2m yearly sales) cant even think of affording it. I need to upgrade 3 editors and I'm not looking at apple. I cant get 3 screaming fast i7 dell pc's running windows 7 and the latest vegas 9 suite AND the adobe after effects for composting and CG.. It's less powerful and far slower workflow than Final Cut and Motion but I can pay for training, all new software + computers for 3 editors for the price of 1 12 core mac editor.
I dont want to switch, but apples pricing and their horrible nasty inefficient implementation of AVCHD in final cut makes switching to Vegas9 a no brainer choice. I hate Sony becauset hey created the AVCHD abortion... but it's what the industry is standardized on for broadcast HD right now that comes out of these cameras... The JVC cameras shoot MOV, but they utterly suck in video compared to the Panasonic and Sony cameras that networks like Discovery networks and even NBC uses.
I'm not the only one... Apple is pricing themselves out of the market right now.
I remember a colleague, who was quite adept at complex software tasks like writing scsi adapter drivers, telling me about how he 'invented' hashing. He was quite right, in the sense that he had never seen it before, and came up with it independently. I didn't have the heart to show him it had been well documented before he was born.
I loved showing people that most of what they "invented" was already done, mostly by telling them the book name that talks about what they did and suggesting they read it for even more ideas. Stroking egos is for the Management degrees not the CS degrees. Problem is Most CS teachers and classes dont even recommend you read "the art of computer programming" which I consider to be required.. It covers 98.7% of everything you will ever need to know.
Sounds like my first year a Michigan State University. I took classes that covered what I had in AP chemistry at my high school. Plus I took AP Trig and Calculus... Yet was forced to take Algebra because it was a required class...

Being able to read it and play it are two very different things.
The only way I have to play a bluray is by violating the DMCA.

I was full time student and a full time employee for the 4 years I went to school.
School 7:00am to 4:00pm work was 7:00pm to 10:00pm and then I worked 7-7 saturday and sunday.
It is very doable and what is required for the non rich kids to work their way through school on their own.
Did I get to binge drink and party like a fool? no, thats only for kids that daddy paid their way.

Most colleges dont like you to test out of "required" classes either. they make a lot less money off you when they do that.
