  1. Re:Idiocy on Homeland Security To Scan Citizens Exiting US · · Score: 2, Interesting

    The incentives are straightforward:

The pilot program is only in select locations, so they cannot put people in jail/rooms. This is because the publicity surrounding detention would deter people from exiting the country in say, Detroit.

The pilot, and ultimately any partial coverage (i.e. less than 100% exits gathering prints), will rely on the cost/economics of traveler's inconvenience. People may be willing to drive 100 miles west to avoid being printed, but you can only get printed once (you only care once), and certain things like plane tickets are non-transferable.

Presumably when total coverage is reached, you simply won't be able to leave the country without giving the feds your prints. But, by then, assuming gradual increase of coverage, for the reasons above, it is very likely you already gave your prints anyways =).

There's really only one way to truly solve this idiocy: less federal power (i.e. transferred to states) and better education. Unfortunately these are two long term solutions, and better education requires removal of the public system, so sit back and enjoy the ride.

It is very easy to get your 360 (insert favorite console here) modded, and after that you can play burned games. PC games are already under assault by the console market, which sports lower development costs and higher unit sales. Come to think of it, crazy PC DRM is just another nail in PC games' coffin. Of course, good PC games will always exist. But as the market dwindles my selection will get worse and worse. Pretty soon I'll just be waiting around for the next blizzard game or iteration of Civilization. Oh wait I already am.

  16. Still have a long way to go on Adults Too Quick to Dismiss Educational Gaming? · · Score: 2, Insightful
As an a intern for a major game development company, I had an opportunity to sit in on a debate between a university professor and the company President (2006). The professor's area of specialization was in psychology and serious games; ie he was the 'Pro games in school' fellow. What I remember most from the debate was the President firmly shooting down the idea of ever producing any serious (educational) games. In his opinion there is no money in education.

So the point is we're at a standstill. Education authorities don't believe in the teaching power of games, and the games industry believes there is no money in education. It is no small wonder games aren't widely accepted in curricula yet given no one has bothered to throw a budget at the issue.

Me, I remember being an 12 year old kid trying to explain to my father how MUDding was extremely educational. I think in within 10 years someone will gamble on a high-budget education project and come out extremely profitable.
