    If I post a piece of paper on a telephone pole with the addresses of all banks in the city in which it is posted and someone uses that information to rob one of the banks on that list, am I guilty of 'facilitating' said robbery?
    If I leave a stack of CDs in a box by the sidewalk in front of my house with a sign that says' "Take one, leave one."; does that make me guilty of copyright infringement?

    This was 'passed' by a forum, not the UN General Assembly. It is a non-binding resolution, which is another way to say, "We think this is an idea." That's all, now move along.

    Get real.
    Every major manufacturer re-labels drives for inventory and warranty purposes. They also use custom firmware to identify the drives for the same reasons. Special grommets? If you have worked with ADMs you know those grommets are extremely thin, shred to bits if you try to reuse them -more likely you lose them taking the thing apart, and are there more to keep the screws from coming loose than anything else. I have replaced drives in ADM modules before with RE drives -because the drives were mirrored- and haven't had a problem. If you are going to replace the drive in a server -a piece of mission-critical equipment- with the cheapest bulk OEM drive you can find, you will have problems.

    So when you put your education information into a job application or in your CV, they know right away that you're a liar and they toss your application into the dustbin. The age-based discrimination has to be proven as the sole reason that you didn't get the job if you contest it. Also, smoking and drinking -unless you're doing a quart of Jack and/or Smirnoff and three packs of Marlboro Reds a day- has nothing to do with how you look. That's all genetics.

    Doing what? Surfing? Waiting tables? Cleaning pools? Reading /.? On 4chan?

    If you haven't been in IT for the last twelve years working your ass off somewhere in the 'real' world, your fancy 'book-learning' and 'college degree' is going to get you, at best, -especially in this 'down' economy- an entry level position in a cubicle doing TPS reports all day. You won't be coding on the 'big' project, you'll just be putting up with all the 'Lumberghs' in the office.

    If you do get a job, just get used to hearing, "You can just go ahead and move a little bit to the left. Yeah, that's it. Great."

    Since when is curtailing illegal activity a moral issue? This is contractual at best. Issue a notification to all subscribers of the change in TOS -with a definite implementation date- and just 'git 'er done'. Oh, and those of you who claim that P2P has 'legitimate' uses (other than downloading your favorite distro), cite examples of how you personally employ P2P for 'legitimate', personal, use.

    Which isn't entirely untrue. ACS (Automated Case System) which is their current case-management system, is woefully obsolete. The VCF (Virtual Case File) that was to be implemented as its replacement was a classic example of project management failure and was scrapped after spending $170 Million taxpayer dollars on it. Now they are developing the Sentinel system that was supposed to cost $450 Million and be completed by December 2009, but, best estimates now say that it won't be completed until 2012. The outgoing Bush administration shorted the funding for the current phase of the project by $56 Million so that puts a crimp in the schedule. Oh, well.

    Not to defend them, when they say they can't find it, they really can't.

    Your 'exclusive' term expires in five years. If you do not produce 'exclusive', derivative, works within the term of 'copyright', the work passes into the public domain to be exploited by those who can and you lose all claims to said 'copyright'. If you do, then you get a five year extension. It's (almost) the same thing as 'publish or perish'. Be productive while you are at the most productive stage of your career -and reap the rewards- instead of sitting on your laurels and stifling the innovation of those who come after you who possess greater intellectual capacity.

    If Hollywood made movies that were worth stealing, more people would be 'video-ing' movies. Most -if not all- of this stupidity takes place in markets where the videos are turned into cheap, flea-market quality, DVDs that are sold in locales where copyright means that it's alright to copy someone's work. Very few of the massive, high-budget, POSes that are being churned out by Hollywood these days are 'must sees' -let alone 'must buys' or 'must torrent'.

    It would affect any person charged with a similar 'crime' in any court in the U.S. because the case is being tried in a court of 'competent jurisdiction'. If Child's attorneys botch this and he goes down on these charges -and loses on appeal- the precedent that this would set could effectively screw a whole lot of people in the future.
