I like when state run colleges, using state paid employees and facilities, get a million dollars to do research, and suddenly, we can't see/share the results of that research, because that company owns it. Students can download and install anything they want, browse to any sites they want, etc, and after the computer reboots, it is back to normal. Because of requirements at my school to use some software that required elevated priveleges to run, I had to reimage about 1/5 of our computers in our open lab every week, and go check out machines that were being unresponsive, printing problems, etc. probably a good 5 hours a week. After I installed the software, I spend a grand total of about 2 hours a month in that lab. No spyware, no crap laying around on the system from limewire, etc

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge advocate of opensource, and have been slowly transitioning to it in as many places as possible, but not becuase of cost to the school. I do it because we have lots of small businesses in the community. If our graduates are used to free alternatives, they will encourage their employers to switch, saving them money.

The nice thing about USB is that it is first and foremost a communication protocol. It would be very nice if when you plugged your device in, it got it's standard 500mA, and then requested from the charger the amount of power it actually needed to charge the quickest. The chargers could actually become smart, and do things like shut off power to ports when not in use, or turn the power way down when the device is charged.

Why would that be bad? It is the selective disruption of "certain" protocols and sites that is the biggest problem with Comcast. If they implemented some sort of FWQ (Fair-Weight Queuing) system like the one that is built into IOS, then it wouldn't care what the traffic was, just that you had emptied your bucket, (sent your allotted amount of packets) and had to wait until everyone else got to do the same until you went again.. That strikes me as being about as fair as you could be. The problem Comcast is going to run into is when they have oversubscribed their service, and users start complaining about they're downloads speeds not being what is advertised, and then moving to a competitor.

I would have no problem with this, just like I would not have a problem with a company saying "You have X you can download a month, then your limited to 512k/s" or something. At least they are not blocking, and at least they are honest, and you can plan for it.

Actually, your answer to why your car doesn't run on solar yet is rather simple. Because we haven't needed solar power to win a war yet. Nuclear got everything it needed to get off the ground, working, demonstrated, and dropped. It was needed to fight a war. Radio, space ships, etc? Same things. The US Military is just starting to come to the conclusion that half their vehicles exist solely to deliver fuel and supplies to the other half(the fighting half) and that there is a huge risk in running tankers full of Diesel and gas to forward areas, as they become very easy targets. Destroy the supply lines, and those 70Ton M1A tanks become very large, immobile targets. Add to that, the skyrocketing cost of fuel the military has to buy. (not to mention, the huge costs of keeping 50% of your peopled tied up in support roles).

THat is why the military is starting to look at things like solar, small nuclear plants, etc. They are looking at hybrid vehicles that work like a train, the whole powertrain is electric, powered by a generator. Some of these vehicles are pretty cool, they could sit there and idle at the forward CP, and you just plug all your radios and equipment into the truck. No need to lug a generator with you.

I have a feeling things are going to improve quite quickly over the next few years. Nothing improves technology like fat government contracts!
