  1. Re:Comparisons... on Expand Your Galactic Civilizations For Free · · Score: 2, Informative

The gameplay is very similar to the OS/2 version, in that you still colonize planets, and fight pretty much the same people. The combat system is still pretty much the same, as well.

The diplomacy system is completely redone, and you can make any offer at any time, instead of going through a list of predefined offers. In addition, you also fight to control galactic resources, which provide bonuses to your entire civilization.

Of course, the tech tree, ships and planetary improvements are changed somewhat.

Wow, that's great. Slack has the same thing, and you can do it with just your PC. So, I don't see that as making a huge difference, especially since a dreamcast (out of the box) lacks stuff like a keyboard, and a hard drive, a mouse, etc.

  10. Re:This is a bit silly on "Fastest Browser On Earth" Cuts Crud · · Score: 1

I'm all for making the browser more standards-compliant, but 'fastest browser on earth' is a completely useless claim.

In fact, the claim may be entirely counter-productive. The average user isn't really going to understand that the network is the bottleneck, anyway. So, when they hear the claim "fastest browser on earth," they'll probably have the expectation that Opera will turn their crappy 56K line into a faster line, and that they'll get faster downloads somehow.

So, when it takes just as long to download the pages that they want to view, they'll think that the Opera people are a bunch of lying bastards and go back to IE or whatever it is that AOL comes with.

  11. Sound and computing on Does Your Debugger Sing to You? · · Score: 1

The work may eventually give sound a bigger role in computing.

Sound already has an important role in computing: drowning out office noise. I'd hate to stop the flow of music as I program and let in office noise, and then still try to pick out sounds from the debugger. Especially when the people in nearby cubes insist on playing god-awful pop.

However, if you're planning on playing on a laptop (which I guess the guy would be doing, since it IS on a plane), I would strongly suggest that you get an external keyboard or keypad.

Ten pages wouldn't do it. Would you drop another seven bucks for ten pages? Uh uh. What people would do then is read the book, then go over to the bookstore and read the last ten pages there. It only takes a couple of minutes, and looks like ordinary browsing. Also, for a lot of books, the last ten pages if past the most exciting part, and are just there to say that everything turned out A-OK.

Huge negative results, right? Britney is probably something that every college kid in a dorm has pirated by now, so no one would even bother. It's probably better to start fresh this way, with an artist that no one has pirated yet, and see what happens.

You know, a lot of people don't make special trips to go to the video store. On my way home from work, I pass by 3 or 4 video stores, any of which I could drop by really quickly to get a movie. That whole distance is pretty insignificant, especially when you consider that many video stores are right next to grocery stores, meaning that you can get groceries AND videos at the same time. That further reduces the amount of fuel spent exclusively for a DVD.

The University of Utah does not control, monitor or guarantee the information contained in these sites or information contained in links to other external web sites, and does not endorse any views expressed or products or services offered therein.
The University has already disclaimed any liability for the content of the site, and has specifically said that it does not endorse any views. This seems to be a pretty fair indicator that the University is not censoring ITSELF, since these were not the official viewpoints of the university.
