    Amm ... a society with one child per family may not be sustainable. You are making the same mistake everybody that thinks that there is an obvious solution.
    Imagine in a few generations a single great grandchild will have to support his parents and their parents and considering life expectancy ... maybe some of his great grand parents.

    That would be 6-10 people plus him/her self.

    To add to that, it is western society that desperately needs more youth. Third world countries are having population problems.

    Finally the earth has ample resources to go on if only we where fair and efficient. Australia can support 200 million on the coast alone. 2 billion if you green the desert. You can green the deset if you have energy. You can get clean energy from nuclear fuel. This at the cost of the natural environment, but then the aboriginees changed that ahead of us as well.

    The above is oversimplifying it, but the solution will find us do not worry. We will probably damadge the environment before we do so ... but what's another expensive lesson between enemies (I mean cohabitants of this planet) ?

    PS: I may be guilty of what I accuse you ...

    Water ... why bother coming down to our gravity well, when they can just mine asteroids. Anything else ?

    Because it is not worth it.

    You may like it ... but not enough people care.
    Just because it is profitable, does not mean it is also useful.

    How likely is it that we will see shuttle launch code or software akin to medical devices ?

    On the other hand, MS has pored billions into Windows family as well as office,
    and it is not as comfortable as it would like to be ...

    Not only that but Linux is taking on multiple competitors from mobiles to mainframes at the same time

    How so ?

    Load of crap ?!?! There is no way you have a load of degrees. The people the excel at highly technical fields without having gotten degrees are extreme exceptions.

    This is a logical as saying, why should I study, Einstein couldn't even speak until he was 12. Buddy you're no Einstein. if you can't score a job after getting a bunch of degrees you occupy the other end of the spectrum. One with all that paper work and you are still a dunce.

    Are you kidding ... every time you get a bite in the ass, you will find a computer model somwhere because computers are used EVERYWHERE.

    The is no other way to design now days. You can go back to pre-70s and 60s designs but they are a lot less reliable. They only got reliable because of the guinea pig method of design. Buld it, fly it. Collect the bodies. Do an investigation. Improve it ...

    That doesn't cut it any more ...
