i don't dual boot. my laptop has been linux only from the day i got it, and obviously server and routers are. windows is still on my desktop, but it's dead, and i'm currently 800 miles away from it and won't be able to use it for 2 months. so, i'd say, linux only club.
i can't say that i miss windows either. i've got jagged alliance 2, myth 2, doom, quake, maelstrom and emulator games. i'm not a big gamer anymore, so basicaly if i can't play it under linux, it doesn't really bother me.
i think this is a very good, and scary point. i'm fairly sure that if the cops sprayed us with their ray guns, and we sprayed them with ours, they'd pull out the old fashiond chemical powered lead projectile gun in self defence.
thats pretty much it yeah. i mean sure, i have divx files on my hard drive that are like 320x240 res, but they're shorts that my brother made of blowing things up. they'd play fine.
full length high quality 640x480 movies just aren't going to turn out well, and re-encoding is a bitch. divx doesn't even make it on my celeron 300 laptop. the lowest system i've watched divx movies on is a athlon 500. it's heavy on the cpu.
this is already really common. most everyone i know runs a website from their house. my apartment currently has 2 dsl lines, mine and my roomates. his has romhat.net, mine has truffula.net.
it's just not that hard to setup a linux box to do all my e-mail, and serve pages for my friends, and any other assorted projects.
apt-cache show stormpkg
in unstable, and maybe woody.
it's got quite a few gnome dependancies, aparently.
and a friend of mine makes a qt one called qaptivate
deb http://www.linuxmechanix.com/debian./
personally, i like the command line for it. but, i can see why some people wouldn't want that.
i deny that. i personally preffer debian's installer's to mandrakes. if you have a clue what you're doing, the debian install i find much faster, and easier to use to get a minimal system installed.
but, all personal preferance. i just thought i'd throw it out there that some of us like debian's installer.
you could not freak out... and just update your bios like i did, and everything works perfectly. i have had zero lockups on my system, and i've had it for about a year now.
for the time and cost that would take, why not buy a new hard drive?
doing multiple dd's to a drive is really the best method. i think DoD's standard is 7 rewrites. but, i could be wrong.
it's all the same stuff with a differnt name, and it has a couple different specific tools. all the configuration is more or less the same.
progeny or mandrake have good easy installers that it'd be really hard to screw up. personally, i think once you have a faint idea of what you're doing, the debian installer makes more sense to me than any pretty graphical mess.
this part is somthing that is always good to change. when there's an undisputed leader, they charge what they want, add new features when they want., do whatever they feel like... if they have competition they're forced to be a little more responsive.
not that a really expect gimp to compete with photoshop on a serious level anytime soon, if ever. but, for those who are just playing around, or can't or don't want to pay $600 for photoshop... it's a good option.
it might actually put some competition back.... err, wait. i'm not sure if i WANT war^H^H^H competition between aol and microsoft. i don't think even those of us who never touch their products would escape unscathed....
only one do it yourselfer? creepy. i've had 3 ibm thinkpads, 1 kiwi opennote laptop, and 4 desktop systems i built. can't imagine not wanting to build it...
personally, i think star office is pretty good. now, in this case i think it might especially be alright if the entire campus was going to be using it.
another way to look at this is... what about costs? and yes, there's the argument that linux costs more to support. i think thats a load of garbage. once linux is up and running and configured. it stays that way. you won't have to deal with your users breaking things all the time, or windows random failures. and really, showing someone how to copy and paste in SO is the same as in MSO. they'll still be just as clueless when you're done.

oh, but to do that, you'd have to be running a unix like OS. sorry.
