One of my former guild mates sold his account for over $1000. He's invested less than $1000 into playing WoW.

Assume that you have a guild of 10 people that are really good. You all know each other in real life. You could, in theory, open a new account, get guild mates to help power this character to level 80. Then you run 10-man raids that you can 9-man to get this character geared up. Turn around and sell this account that is -mostly- geared up to a certain level of raid content. Split the proceeds 10 way with everyone that helped gear that character out.

Account selling does make money, the question is how much is your character worth and if how much of your sunk costs you recover. A $1000 account usually requires BiS gear along with some rare stuff. On the other hand, I've not played actively in about 8 months. My current gear is on par for heroics version of the original content and 10-man Ulduar, but nothing better than that. I don't know how effective PUG raiding is, but gear wise I'm probably at the level of scrubs. I'd say I'd be lucky to get $100 for my account, it's still better than starting from scratch. I think for a new player, without friends, 4-6 months to get to where my character is would be a reasonable assessment. That would recover around 1/4 - 1/5 of what I've invested into monthly fees.

I'll be honest, the only place where I see the Russian military being a threat to the US military is in naval forces. I have no idea how good their attack subs are, and how much danger they would pose to our surface fleet. Their attacks subs would serve as a useful deterrent to us positioning our carrier forces off their shores, forcing us to rely on allied air bases and ground forces to take on Russia. Even so, the only way Russia would be able to win against a full-fledged US assault would be on logistics and interrupting supply lines. The Russian defense strategy can be summed up in two actions. Keep throwing men at the invaders until their supplies run out. It's why Napoleon failed, it's why Hitler failed.

China on the other hand lacks the naval fleet to challenge US carrier forces. That would allow the US to station their carrier fleets off the coast of China to attack most of their major manufacturing sites. We could stage longer range bombers from bases in S. Korea and Japan. Once China's anti-air defenses had been eradicated it would just be a matter of bombing them into submission. China's major threat in a conventional war is the sheer number of troops they can pull upon.

In the government's defense. NASA technically isn't enumerated under the powers of Congress. If the funding of NASA was delegated from defense budgets then that's a different story, but as a stand-alone program it's unconstitutional....

Of course, most spending falls outside of the enumerated powers, and before someone brings up the general welfare clause prior to the enumerated powers...

"If Congress can do whatever in their discretion can be done by money, and will promote the General Welfare, the Government is no longer a limited one, possessing enumerated powers, but an indefinite one, subject to particular exceptions."

There's essentially no point to enumerate the powers since the general welfare clause would include all the enumerated powers. The general welfare clause is no more than a statement of why the specific powers are enumerated and granted rather than a grant of power itself.

IMO, I would like to see a Constitutional amendment that adds the power to spend money on a Space Program.

  16. Re:Solution? on US Colleges Say Hiring US Students a Bad Deal · · Score: 1

The fair tax requires the repealing of the 16th Amendment, meaning no income tax. The flat tax sets EVERYONE at the same low tax rate. The fair tax relies entirely on companies collecting sales tax which reduces a lot of overhead caused by the withholding.

The fair tax becomes a lifestyle tax rather than an earnings/redistributive tax. So if I earn $1,000,000 a year with a 10% sales tax, but only live like someone who earns and spends $60,000 a year, I am taxed $6,000 just about equally with the person earning $60,000. With the flat tax of say 10%, if I earn $1,000,000 a year and live like I have $60,000, I will still be taxed $100,000 while the person earning $60,000 is taxed $6,000.

One nice thing about a fair tax is that welfare recipients would still contribute to their own welfare via sales tax on goods that they buy that are taxed. IE, you're using welfare to pay for non-essentials.

I've always been amazed by the German Shepherd breed for its intelligence. I heard a story about a week ago with regard to a German Shepherd attack dog that had gone through training a couple years previous to the incident. There were two shepherds going through exercises. The first one hadn't been through them in two years, the younger one was going through it for the first time.

The trainer was out in the dog bite suit, and told the owner to give the command to attack for the older dog. The owner did, the older dog went in front then stopped about 10 feet from the trainer and watched him. The owner was thinking what a crappy attack dog when the trainer told the owner to call the dog off. The owner called the dog off and the trainer came up to the owner and said he was impressed. This is when it started to click for me. The owner was confused, the dog had not gone and attacked the trainer, what was so impressive about that. The trainer explained that previously he had taught that very dog to only attack if the target moved. The dog remembered, despite not having reinforcing training in a while, that it's only supposed to attack if the target moves, and that it is supposed to keep the target still until the owner arrives.

I just wish I knew where my other favorite breed landed on the smart to dumb scale.
