OK I admit I have a relative or two in the plumbers Union in Toledo (no less).
One item one of those people told me there are all types in the union. From raging right type to left types. They have a hard enough time voting for a president of the local, forget about national politics. My two people tell me that most union guys are working fairly hard quite a few projects. From a nuclear reactor to construction of various buildings. Right now the work is really good for the unions. It has not always been this way mind you as it is either feast or famine when it comes to union plumbers in and around Toledo. Finding one person that is willing to speak up for McCain is not that hard especially since a lot of the union types ever got past high school. Do not take this guy as representative if anything a minority.

In either case I do not see why an new computer cannot be assembled and loaded on earth and shipped up there and installed by an astronaut. *IF* the idiotic people did some hardwiring and it cannot be replaced then fire the developers (and include the people that wrote the OS while you are at it). I have no sympathies for people who design an environment(computer and OS) that cannot be unscrewed and popped out and a new unit be popped in and screwed back in. This environment should have been taken into consideration in the planning stage NOT at failure time.

I think the idea is generally OK *IF* companies do not violate the spirit of the law and that is the rub companies just see $$$$ savings. Even if they were caught the fine would be miniscule to what they save. The fine should be large enough and serious enough to make sure companies do not violate it.

Not a whole lot. The money that supports the drug trade (ie users) would still be there as you need money to buy drugs so money is part of the equation. If you were going to GIVE it away that opens a whole side issue of state supported drug houses that would swallow up any savings as there would be quite a few doctors to run it (read lots of $$). I honestly don't see any benefit from government selling/giving drugs away.
People are doubly endangered by state support drug programs. The weak will have even less incentive to not get into drugs. It is essentially a no way to win situation. Incarcerating people who do drugs just a way to throw tax payer dollars away.
