Windows allows devs to make stupid apps that don't conform, but if a dev wants to make a shitty app they should be allowed to.
Easily confused people might need the exact same thing in the exact same place in every program, but there's no helping some people.
Here is my beef though.. Microsoft think it's cool to issue a load of GUI design guidlelines and then... completely ignore them for their own apps !! This is to make them look unique and cool, but all it does is incentivise (?) all 3rd party devs to think "well hey *we* need to stand out as well, so *we* won't stick to the guidelines". It's like the prisoners dilemna, if you both "follow the rules" (ie don't grass) then you get out in 1 year... but if one of you decides to stitch up the other (ie make an "improved" GUI) you get out now (ie "look better to the public") !
That was a very insightful read. Although it was "obvious" from their public intentions and statements, it does help to read something like your post to identify exactly where they are going.
I'm developing a game for the Android platform and the amount of support and stuff needed from google to just get it done is phenomenal... and now I know the intention above it all makes sense.. Google will make $$$ from sales of the game.. so make it as easy as possible for people to write stuff - more cash for me is more cash for them....
I hope you don't get into trouble with your marketing department for your post though. I think it's very positive for the company as a whole.
I've been looking for a out of the box UAV project for some time now (or in fact just a land or water based one). The best I can find so far is : "paparazzi" at http://paparazzi.enac.fr/wiki/Main_Page - but it's still quite a bit of work to plug all the bits together (and right now I have very little spare tinkering time). Anybody got any other options ??
"The Technology Keeping Information Flowing in Iran". Is it just me or does this not scan at all ? I know the editors are bad but sheesh !! This place use to be great, went to "ok" and now... well.. see for yourself : http://www.google.com/trends?q=slashdot.org
So glad other people are noticing it too..... Something to do with this http://www.google.com/trends?q=slashdot.org perhaps ? Guess it's the beginning of the end then. Slashdot is dying, and google trends confirms it.
I have a collection of photographs. Not to go into too much detail, but they are good pics and are of me and a group of people from a few years back. I gave each member of that group a copy of those pics. One of them has now posted the best of those pics on his facebook account...
What happens next ?? If facebook decide to use them, do I have to "sue" facebook who will then countersue my friend has he didn't have license to publish them in the first place ?
Apologies - I could have modded that insightful but thought I'd comment instead to say what a good workflow that is (I probably wont use the altoids tin though)
Follow the money - manufacturer makes the phone, sells it for x to the network. If and only if network sees a potential to earn at least x/2 from services (internet / sms/mms etc etc ) will it then allow you to buy the phone for x/2...
If the OS was fully open, then there would be no incentive for the network to buy the phone and subsidize the price - i.e. if you want a truly open phone - you'll get it but at a price.
Shameless plug: I've got both the iphone sdk and the android sdk - I find the google sdk 20x easier to get stuff done and the marketplace puts your apps up *instantly* (upgrades and all). However, the marketplace is suffering from kids abusing the comment capability but when that's nailed (and of course the ability to actually charge for apps) I think we will see very high quality apps coming out for the google phone. Or at least I hope so - I'm writing a game in progress which I hope to earn a bit of cash. (Even more shameless plug : http://www.barcodebeasties.com/ )
Fancy a joint venture web site with all these details and perhaps some place for comments / resolutions etc etc ? I've no idea if there's money involved ( ie incoming ) but I don't mind hosting / maintaining a bit of design... Email me - richardagreen (squiggly a) gmail.com
so.... please let me know either at admin@scareports.com or at the website ( oblig. link : here ) . You can post anonymously as well if you want....
There's a few interesting ones, a few boring ones but I NEED MORE !!!
People - I am trying to collect airport related scary stories. I haven't got many yet but if you have some then please let me know - you can email me at admin@scareports.com or just visit the site (blatant pimping) here .
I'd like to hear more about any of your disasters at airports. I've no idea where I'm going with this but I thought it was a good idea at the time (oh and I wanted to learn django as well). Tell me here
Ladies and Gents - I am trying to collect incidents of security staff abuse (mainly at airports) in the vane hope that perhaps we can identify consistent transgressors of their authority and perhaps even send a message to the airlines that we are no longer going to give them our hard earned buckaroos if they don't put their (albeit indirectly employed) staff in line. I believe we can make a difference (as tacky as that sounds)
If you have a story, please either put it on the site or email it to me at admin@scareports.com . The site address is http://www.scareports.com/ . I apologise now for the rawness (I'm trialling django technology as well).
Can't be bothered to go into a long discussion of what when where and how but are there any other financial + technological slashdotians out there who would be interested in writing some software to create a futures market for these (i.e. Wow / SL / etc etc ) virtual worlds?
