Remember 10 years ago when we used to talk about net neutrality and make grim jokes about how the internet would lead to cable-like channelization?
"Oh, we're going to have to charge you an extra fee on your bill this month, as you didn't subscribe to the premium entertainment package". The door is now open:(
I dunno.. last name Jones. Isn't that about as close to John Doe as you can get? In fact, Jones often means "the person next door", keeping up with the Jonses, etc. I'm guessing its not his real last name.
I guess in this case, "keeping up with the jonses" would have a whole new meaning eh?
Obviously you've not played both doom and doom3. The first was fast and fun, while the second was slow and scary.
Yes, they both had guns. They were both first person. But that goes for a huge percentage of games out there.
More or less the same game is a huge mistruth - a lot of people would rate the original doom as far better gameplay, even with the graphics being so outdated today.
Imagine this:A boxing game. Keeping your firsts at your face/midesction to block punches, and then combing with your own flurry of blows when you see an opportunity. Could be the coolest thing ever.
Google hopes to attract more visitors to its Web site and spawn more searches that generate advertising revenue.
I, for one, am shocked. I never expected that Google would try to make money.
I'm also shocked that they are trying to attract more users to their website - thanks for this news. Until I read this, I was convinced that they were trying to keep themselves a secret.
You didn't make Slashdot with installing Back Orifice on a computer - instead you had to clean some desks. Boohoo. You also didn't have felony charges brought against you for what you did, did you?
These kids were threatened with just that, and then they were told they'd never get into college or find a good job, due to their upcoming felony case. Making kids think they are going to jail for using a password that was supplied with the computer is absurd.
On a final note - VNC was already alive and kicking back in 99 when you were using bo2k, and it was already a much better tool for remote administration. BO2K was buggy, leaked memory like mad, and was made more for fucking with people than actually being a useful tool. Were you just ignorant of VNC back then, or has your memory made your case a little bit more noble over the years?
Well, maybe the fact that most of the reviews are saying that it runs as fast as windows XP on comparable machines. Of course, that would mean that you'd have to RTFA.
On a side note - you can do a comparison of Tiger and Vista on the same hardware now. Apple just doesn't want this to become too well known...
Well - I'd spend a mod point on you modding you insightful, but one can't mod in a topic they have spoken in.
But yeah, I completely agree. Not to mention, if anyone preaches anything at me too heavily, it turns me off quickly. Seeing people quietly / happily / efficiently using linux to do what they want is a Far more powerful endorsement to me than a frothy-mouthed jabberjaw teetering on top of his soapbox. Especially if he is sputtering out half-true or simply wrong accusations.
These "articles" aren't helping linux - they aren't funny, they aren't informative, and they aren't going to sway any windows users to linux. It looks pathetic, and desperate. I am a linux user, but have a lot of family members and friends who use windows. You can be quite sure that they have never had to enter in to the registry to make system changes.
The fact is that anyone with a bit of knowledge can probably bring down their windows system, or their linux system. Its quite easy to delete or change important system files by thinking you know more than you do. An old systems guru, when I was just starting out in the world of IT but it to me this this: "It is ok to have no knowledge, and ti is ok to have a lot of knowledge. You can walk on either side of that road and be safe. If you walk down the middle of the road though, you will probably be hit by a truck." Is very true. Newbies generally won't destroy systems.. linux/windows/whatever... they just can't figure out how.
I'm not sure why CmdrTaco says that the article provokes some thought, as the article is shouting the same thing some of the lesser informed linux zealots have been for years.
I'd say that the most visable feature is interface, not storage. I thought that webmail was webmail was webmail until i started using gmail - I'm not that easily impressed, but its design blew me away - the threaded messages especially. The extra space is great, and i love that it keeps grownig.. but really - the first thing i think about when i think about Gmail is its incredibly well thought out interface.
Not to nitpick, but the way you say they have "lost their edge" in email for waiting so long time come in - well if they waited too long - they'd not have an edge to lose, would they? I'd say they are making huge leaps forward in it - since more and more of the people i send mail to, are using gmail adresses.
Are you sure about the audio thing? I read this morning that there are people out there already using not only audio, but video, through the Google Jabber server... something that the Google talk client doesn't support already.
I don't think google are trying to make friends. I think they are trying to run a business - knowing that a good way to run a business is to keep public opinion on their side (in this case by doing no evil).
If the lack of a Google chat client for you bothers you, write one. Jabber is an open protocol, as you know. If its good enough, maybe goole will buy it, as they have been known to. Or better yet maybe they'll hire you ad you'll experience the gourmet cooking and 50% wage increase that has the/. community talking.
Television gives away its products, relying on advertising. The advertising is valuable because the levelvision is so popular. Googles advertising is successful because google is immensely popular
You can't really say that "history" shows anything in this case. Histrorically speaking, the whole model of internet business is quite new, and no company has ever had such a profitable advertising strategy online.
yeah on gobal - and there were two shows... night drive, and night walk.
Confused the hell out of me, those shows.. night walk was mainly wandering the streets - and through weird hotel walkways - seeing slightly confused people in suits coming out of conference halls etc.
Heh - sorry that you think its real. Thinking its reals says that you beleive there are programs that for some reason slowly erase drives, counting from the highest to lowest "35% of files on your G drive are gone" counting down until he logs out. Its a dramatic effect leading to a punchline, but its not really how things work:)
Its a funny little fiction, written by someone who knows enough to know that 127.0.0.1 is a loopback, but who maybe doesn't know enough to make his story more plausible... if thats what he is going for. I don't think he really was, and its more meant as a good funny chunk of internet lore/fable, on a situation many of us common to IRC have seen.
I already get my VOIP from Primus in Toronto. I pay $40 a month for unlimited north american calling and ridiculously low overseas prices. With the regular phone companies charging over 50 dollars now for really simple service, this is a godsent.
I remember when Nullsoft got picked up by AOL: a mix of happiness in the community that they would finally be paid, and fear of what AOL would do to screw things up. This is worse than I think most had suspected.
Although, on the bright side, winamp has reached near perfection. Either 2.9x for the minimal side of things, or 5.x for the complete package. The sad thing is, every time we'd think that winamp had reached the status of the perfect audio player, Nullsoft would release an update and make perfection even better.
I guess we can be sure that team Nullsoft won't have any access to the Winamp codebase now, and if they do try to go about making the perfect audio player, they'll have to start from scratch:(
"It's more likely they've an odd mutant gene that by coincadence makes them immune to the virus"
Yes, and this is Exactly how genetics work. "odd mutant gene"s happen all the time - we all have a mutation or two, on some level, and some of these mutations become incredibly useful, allowing us to run faster, stay awake longer, think differently, or... resist HIV. Its not a case of genetics reacting to the HIV, but it is surely an example of why darwinism is so incredibly cool. If this mutation is significant enough to give the offsping a winning edge agasint others (meaning HIV would have to spread a lot more) we may see it propogate throughout futher generations.
Genetic evolution doesn't take place when it perceives a problem. Genetic evolution is blind, and "tries" variations at random. This is the whole beauty of it - it boils down to making an error while copying the genome. The errors that make something horrible happen, like causing a person to die instantly, don't propogate. The errors that enhance a person and give them an advantage over other people, do have a chance to propogate.

Illegal, you mean like it used to be for black people to go into white restaurants/washrooms?
I don't agree with piracy, but be careful about confusing the concepts of "illegal" with "immoral". "Illegal" doesn't always mean "wrong".

Two controllers will be there I'm quite sure.

I'd buy a revolution for that game alone.

This brings me back to when Microsoft decided that search engines were cool and launched their search engine/Google killer.
I wonder what ever happened to that Google company after that.
It wasn't CmdrTaco who wrote the article summary.
Yes, but it was CmdrTaco who gave it frontpage attention on Slashdot, wasn't it. And like I said in my starting post, he should know better.
Well - I'd spend a mod point on you modding you insightful, but one can't mod in a topic they have spoken in.

Sounds just like Star Trek, aside from the whole "profit" thing.
But since we're practicing it, Isn't that supposed to be lithp

No joking here - the 24th is my birthday. Being the superstitious type, this sounds like a very bad omen :(
