When you purchase an OEM hard drive from an online retailer that claims "3 year manufacture warranty" be careful! Newegg.com did exactly this, and when my IBM 60gxPiece-of-crap starting making a loud whine-- I checked the IBM website for warranty status. THERE WAS NONE. I called IBM and they had nothing to do with the drive, looking closer at the drive, it was manufactured for DELL, and DELL should carry the warranty for it. Obviously Dell would laugh at you. So you're stuck with a ONE year warranty from newegg.com (in this case). Keep your eyes open people, get retail drives!
On the other hand, I ordered a Seagate SCSI drive, which is available OEM only, and it definitely has a 3-year warranty from seagate. Checked the serial #.
So, in ANY case-- when you get your new hardware, Check the warranty status! If something is wrong, demand a refund or replacement immediately.
My system $1430 shipped. I would consider it an entry level workstation, however it blows away the "entry" level workstations Dell, etc have to offer. I alread have debian on it, single processor for now until i mod my chips.

That's exactly what I do. I look for the lowest prices for components, and check each company with reseller ratings. The company with the best price/performace wins!
I did this test to see how badly my wd200bb drive was draggin down my raid. Not too bad, I think I'll keep it. Peace of mind is better than a few K/sec.:-)

I see people in my class shelling out 100 bucks for adobe illustrator, which they will use for 5 assignments and then let sit on a shelf. Yeah, I warezd the latest version so I could do my assignments (cartography map making) I'm not going to pay for crap just for one class.
I'd warez the books if I could:-P I won't get into that, because it's even more of a sham. My 2nd edition geology book has more information in it that the 7th edition that I had to pay 100 bucks for!
Or maybe give it away for free? Or bribe other companies to use it? Microsoft saw the big picture with Internet Explorer, losing millions of dollars just to steal the market. Of course they will do everything they need to do to maintain their monopoly. They'll be making their own railways and pipelines soons enough...
Why would Computer Manufacturers sue Microsoft over their hardware patents? Is this so that MS can start building their own PCs (xbox) in the future? Is there any market that MS doesn't plan to one day incorporate? What about Pork Bellies? Crude Oil? Lawnmowers?
very true actually. A thin enough layer would be transparent... "3M sells Neutral Series Scotchtint, a professionally applied coating that covers windows with a nearly transparent layer of metal. MSC Specialty Films offers a similar product." --not me
I don't think the humidity will affect it too much. Consider that most drives have an air-hole anyway (with a filter) and they all have those little bags of silicon dioxide crap to keep it dry.
Are there any transparent materials that have metal properties? How about those static shielding bags? Not completely see-through but they do have metal in them, I believe. IMO it would look hella cooler to have a coal-transparent cover, with a blue LED *inside* the drive to accentuate the parts...
I built a computer for a little old lady 50 miles outside of town. I thought XP would be perfect because it's SOOO reliable and all she really does is email and word. Got it all setup and it worked great, didn't need any drivers either.
2 days later her machine is locking up because she installed some old application that shows you the PHASE OF THE MOON in the taskbar.... who the hell cares about the moon? (btw she has a huge poster next to her computer that shows the stage of the moon for every day, for the next 100 years... go figure) But anyway I managed to get her to uninstall it, and I even found a new version of the software that works for XP (as the website claims) So she installs this and then her machine locks up even more. I get her to disable it in with msconfig (because the uninstaller wouldn't work) and fucking Windows XP constantly reminds you that your startup mode is not in "normal mode" THANKS! She really wanted this Lunabar program (and she was getting very dissappointed with windows xp) so I had to go to her house and Install Windows 98 for her.
WinXP sucks ass. So much shit doesn't work right.
On a side note I installed OFFICE XP on another ladies machine, I thought it would be just like Office 2000. Well-- She likes to go back and forth between Clarisworks and Office-- and OfficeXP wasn't reading the Clarisworks files correctly... SO she uninstalled OFficeXP and installed her own version of Office 2k-- and it's the GAY version where you have to CALL MS and get a serial number before you can install it..
OH and I just got an email from that first lady-- she was trying to copy stuff from her zip disks back to her computer and it makes her computer lock up completely when she tries this. I think her zip disk has errors on it but WHY THE FUCK does it have to lock up the machine!!??
One last thing-- I prepared myself by buring cd's with all the drivers that I would need-- because downloading drivers with a 56k modem sucks ass. But of course-- I CANT READ THEM IN WINDOWS. I burned these CD's in LINUX using Xcdroast. Standard mode ISO9660... I can read them just fine. what the HELL is wrong with windows??
Anyone who's owned a car KNOWS that it's only a matter of time before their cooling system springs a leak. Granted the conditions under the hood are quite a bit more demanding than inside a computer; but the fact remains the same-- IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME.
Im running the 2.5 kernel and it seems as snappy as the 2.4.blah with the preemptpbile kernel patch-- winamp doesnt skip even when burning cd's and starting mozilla... is there something different here? besides that i cant find the preemtpaible kernel patch for 2.5
I much prefer the feel of Half-life, and the numerous mods. For any fans of Rainbow Six, try FireArms Mod I haven't gotten Half life to work 100% in linux; I can play single play w/ OpenGL and it's very fast-- but the display screws up when i create a network game: The main menu get stuck there, so I can see my gun and walk around, shoot, but i just can't see in front of me... very annoying. If anyone has gotten halflife to work well, please post your details, command line options, etc. I used a cvs build of wine, latest nvidia drivers, debian unstable, etc.
Nice analogy... uhh... A cold winter would be better than a entire year of shitty XP headlines. moron.
Am I the only one who sees the irony in this? What kind of subliminal message will people get while playing this game?
"How do I join the terrorist side?"
"You can't, you are always a terrorist"
"But I look like a US Soldier?"
"There is no difference... "

Within a few months windows viruses and exploited holes will render the OS completely useless.
They'd sell the client for 5 bucks

One is a giant piece of shit... the other is an operating system for computers. Whats the deal?
Why is it emphasized or even mentioned that this patch is free? Has there ever been a MS patch that hasn't been?
