    It's not just the corn; it's the ethanol. Ethanol is a poor excuse for a bio-fuel: low energy and not well-suited for pipelines because it is corrosive and absorbs water.

    I get calls all the time (so much for Do Not Call) from companies that want to put solar panels on my roof at their expense and charge me for the power that I would use, at lower rates than the local electric utility charges. But I live 2 miles from the beach and don't have air conditioning, so I interrupt their sales pitch and point out that my monthly electric bill is only around $30, much less than their minimum of $100 or more. They go away immediately.

    I was on a jury once in a case of driving under the influence of Xanax, an anti-anxiety prescription drug. Two problems with the case: the driver was physically disabled, so he would have had trouble with the field sobriety test anyway; also, there is no legal standard (at least in California) for a minimum blood Xanax measurement that causes impairment.

    I was in a hospital ER recently that had several "atomic" clocks on the wall, and they showed times that were off by several minutes from each other and the correct time.

    "The way we think" is more fundamental than even the calculus level. Basic algebra and geometry bridge the gap between collections of memorized facts and a systematic way of formulating problems.

    My employer blocks the Firefox install and update sites. The want us to use only their outdated and crippled version, which is "approved" but not "supported".

    Same problem for me, and the gradients between the far, medium and near parts of the lens made too much of it blurry, which made it particularly tough to find the right view in dim light. My optometrist took them back and gave me lined trifocals. I also got a pair of bifocals with the medium and near focus that is great for computer use. I can sit at my desk and see most everything I need.
