But what if I'm riding in a car? Do I need a driver's license? Do I need one to ride on a bus or train? Ride my bike? Walk to the next town?
There is a difference between needing a license to drive a car (licensed to operate a motor vehicle), and needing it to travel by any mode (travel documents). People are worried that if you have a 'national ID', movement will be tracked or restricted.
Then all you have to do is make sure you download it within the state. The sales tax isn't your responsibility, and the use tax doesn't apply. Loophole!
When did the 'buyer' become responsible for paying sales tax to the government? I thought that the seller collected the sales tax from the buyer to give to the government. Are they going to come after me for the sales tax on a CD I bought at a local store if the seller doesn't send in the tax?
One major factor why whites do better on standardized tests is that those tests are written by other white people who share a common fund of experiences.
What does 12X12 compute to for a black person? Something besides 144? What is the black capitol of Oregon? It's not Salem for black people? What year did the black Pearl Harbor bombing occur on? Did Japan attack blacks on a date that wasn't December 7th, 1941?
I always hear this "Oh, the test are written by whites, so minorities won't relate well to the test." excuse. Too bad it is completely refuted by the fact that Asians do better on SAT/ACT scores than whites.
Because the entire speech was on the topic of the history of the court, which is that of a group of white males, versus her own experiences, which are that of a Latina woman?
Yes, that was the topic of her speech, but are you saying that so as long as the speech is about race, she can say whatever racists things she wants? Great! I'm going to try it as well:
"Historically, standardized test scores have shown that blacks perform worse than whites. I would hope that a white person with the richness of their experiences would more often than not score higher on a standardized test than a black person who hasn't lived that life."
Thanks for giving me a loophole to make racist statements. The fact that my statement is clearly racist is so staggeringly obvious.
Then why say "Latina woman" and "White male" in that statement? If the context is about your upbringing and such, then why mention race/gender? She just as easily could have said:
"I would hope that a wise person who grew up poor with the richness of their experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion [as a judge] than a person who hasn't lived that life."
And yet she decide to include race/gender in the statement, and clearly pointed out that one race/gender would come to a better conclusion than another. She is clearly a sexist racist. If I ever said that "A white guy would come to a better conclusion than a latina woman", I'd be (rightly) called a racist sexist. And my wife would slap me. And if a white male up for appointment to the Supreme Court ever said it, his nomination would be withdrawn in five seconds flat.
Brave Homeland Security Officer: Place your thumb here. Traveler: Ok. *Presses thumb to scanner* Brave Homeland Security Officer: Ah-ha! This says that you are in this country illegally! I've got you now! Traveler/Illegal immigrant: Sooooo... since I'm not allowed to be in this country, do you want me to get on my plane and leave, or what? Brave Homeland Security Officer: Yes! And, um, never come back! That'll teach you! Traveler/Illegal immigrant: Yes, this punishment of being delayed from my flight for 30 seconds has surely made me so uncomfortable that I won't ever sneak back into this country. You win.
How the hell did trash disposal get so mobbed up? Did the first conversation go something like this:
Mob Boss: Ya know, it's great being in the booze, gambling, and beating the crap out of people business, but you know what I've always wanted to get a piece of...? Mob Lackey: What's dat, boss? Mob Boss:...garbage collection. There's nuthin' more glamorous than telling people you work in garbage. Mob Lackey (fearful for his life): Uh... yeah, yeah, great idea boss!
While working for a factory that was switching over to SAP, I noticed that anyone outside of the SAP world (users) pronounces it 'Sap' (like from a tree). While everyone in the SAP world (consultants, etc) is very careful to pronounce it S-A-P (sounding out each letter). And they are quick to tell people that pronounce it 'Sap' that it should be pronounced S-A-P.
The software sucked so badly, and I hated it so much, that whenever I was around our SAP consultants, I made a conscience effort to say 'Sap' instead of S-A-P every chance I got.:-)
Damn, CAFE is so stupid. What does the average consumer care what the CAFE standard is? How does it affect the person actually using gas? It doesn't. All the user sees is a car that gets X MPG.
If the Feds want people to use less gas... RAISE THE F@#$!ING FEDERAL GAS TAX! You change one number somewhere, and you're done. You can even raise it incrementally, if you like. And as a plus, you get more tax dollars to improve the roads (or maybe waste on some pork project, but one can always hope). Look at what happened when gas broke $4.00/gal. People started buying more fuel efficient cars and driving less. They made these decisions even though the CAFE standard never changed. So what is the point of CAFE?
Insurance will probably cost you at least 1.5-2k a year.
I only pay $700/year for well covered insurance, so you're wrong there.
And maintaining a car, including washes, new tires, changing the oil, etc., can easily add up to multiple thousands per year.
Lets see: 1 wash a week at $15 each: $780 1 new set of tires every year (which is overkill) $600 4 oil changes at $30 each: $120 Total: $1500 So you're wrong there as well.
That's almost 90,000 miles per year assuming $2/gallon and a 25 mpg car. Which is about 330 miles per work day.
Here's a hint: move closer.
plus insurance and car payments add up to more than $20k/year
Unless you are getting ripped off, insurance shouldn't be more than 1k, which should leave you more than enough to buy the car in one year. What the heck were you driving?
Bill Clinton (D): Signed into law the "Defense of Marriage Act - 9/21/96 George W. Bush (R): "Today, I call upon the Congress to promptly pass and to send to the states for ratification an amendment to our Constitution defining and protecting marriage as a union of a man and woman as husband and wife. " - 2/24/04 Barack Obama (D): "And so, although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition, and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman."
Tax rates on the wealthy? They differ.
Bill Clinton (D): 39.6% tax rate George W. Bush (R): 35% tax rate Barack Obama (D): plans to reset back to 39.6% Wow, 4.6% difference.
Most foreign policy matters? They differ.
George Bush Sr. (R): Attacked Iraq Bill Clinton (D): Bombed Iraq repeatedly, also bombed Yugoslavia George W. Bush (R): Invaded Iraq and Afghanistan Barack Obama (D): Is sending even more troops into Afghanistan
I could go on and on, but the point is that they create a perception of difference, but the results are always the same no mater who gets into office.
Only someone completely ignorant of US politics would try to claim that they're the same.
Only someone completely ignorant of US politics would try to claim that they're different.
Learn to grow up a little. These people are rightly pointing out that there is not difference between the R's and the D's. Don't like it? It doesn't mesh with your view that Obama is the best thing ever? Tough.
Did the US and Russians ever fight side by side? Weren't US forces driving from western Europe into Germany, while the Russians moved from eastern Europe into Germany?
all this guy said was "Do you really think there are $90,000 worth of parts and labor"
...During the discussion of "Are higher priced things perceived to be better than they really are?". He was implying (wrongly) that the Mercedes is only perceived to be a high quality car due to it's high price tag, and I pointed out that you can quantify the "betterness" (yeah, made up word) of the components used in the car. I only used the Festiva as an example of poor quality/performance relative to the Mercedes.
Try to keep up on what we are talking about, Skippy.
Do you really think there are $90,000 worth of parts and labor in an S-Class Mercedes...
For someone that likes to call others stupid, you don't know anything about cars, do you? You really think that a Ford Festiva and a Mercedes have the same performance and quality of parts? This isn't a case of "I THINK my car has better parts/performance". You can actually buy mechanical parts that have higher tolerances, better engineering and longer lasting materials. And you can prove it with testing methods.
When you are traveling 55-65, and encounter a 'driver' putting along at 45 MPH, they have to:
a. Keep driving at 55-65 and ram them, or
b. Slow down, thus causing every car behind them to also slow down in a chain reaction causing a huge traffic snarl
I'll give you a few minutes to decide your answer.
Hint: It has nothing to do with tailgating.
Nice job saving yourself some gas. Too bad you wasted the gas of hundreds of drivers stuck in stop and go traffic behind you because you clogged up the road. Way to go!!
So, yeah, driver's licenses are travel documents.
But what if I'm riding in a car? Do I need a driver's license?
Do I need one to ride on a bus or train?
Ride my bike?
Walk to the next town?

I'll let you handle both sides of the discussion from here on out.
That's probably a good idea.
Because the entire speech was on the topic of the history of the court, which is that of a group of white males, versus her own experiences, which are that of a Latina woman?

What if someone changes their stance on a major issue? Should they resign over that as well?
The voters elected a person, not a party. I wish we wouldn't even list the party of a candidate on the ballot.

Eh, last I checked, "American" isn't a race...
Nice job saving yourself some gas. Too bad you wasted the gas of hundreds of drivers stuck in stop and go traffic behind you because you clogged up the road. Way to go!!
...hate and / or violence...
Why do you lump the two together? I can hate something and not wish violence against it.
Example: I hate Al Sharpton. But I've never had the urge to hit him.
...as long as you dont point to people who are part of it.
I can't call John Travolta stupid for following scientology?
