or maybe Intel can apply for help to the US government. Remember... these are the same foks who allowd 500,000 Iraqi kids to die of starvation and disease
Yup... no involvement... wait a minute... weren't we Canadians fighting in Europe for a couple or three years whilst YOUR president's grandfather was selling the Nazis goods and services? Of course. And he paid a $5 mil fine for it too. But only after the US entered the war after being bombed by the Japanese... and only after the Germans declared war on YOU. Oh yeah... and the Japanese bombed you because you had blockaded their oil and other strategic goods. The same crap in WW I. We were in in 1914, you arrived in 1917. Get real.
We have uncapped wireless here in the Queen Charlotte Islands for $40 Canadian a month from a private, unsubsidized isp. There's no reason to not have it in the US... only excuses.
Exactly right. OS is about developers. I couldn't right a line fo code to save my soul, but i consider myself privileged to be able to use it and be a small part of the community by hosting a LUG.
That being said, I've waited a verrrry long time for Enlightenment 2.0
If you bother to check you'll find that none of the countries on your list have populations who support their governments in this.
The dude in Italy is up on corruption charges and the turkey in Spain is a real beauty... used to be a registered member of the Fascist Party and was a staunch supporter of the old Franco regime.
One suspects that there have been some fairly heavy bribes paid to get some of these idiots to sign on.
Years ago, while living in a foreign country, I took to carrying a pistol. A friend of mine suggested that "If you keep on carrying that thing, you're gonna use it one day." He was right. One day I had to.
While it can be argued that it was a good thing I had it and was able to defend myself, on thinking it over I realized that carrying a pistol encourages you to put yourself in the position that it will be needed.
We don't carry pistols here in Canada. We have 1/4 the gun violence you do in the US.
It seems reasonable to outlaw atomatic weapons and hand guns. They are not needed for home defence and are used exclusively to shoot people. Still... I guess it can be seen as a kind of population control, which might be a "good thing".
Jesus wept! Don't you folks read the newspapers? They're building software to put a firewall around YOU in the US of A. Naybe focus a little closer to home.
I use a small local ISP here in Canada that charges me $25 Canadian a month for 100 hours dial up. We are soon to go wireless which will cost $40 Canadian a month for unlimited bandwidth. The other day when they found out that I was running an international news site updated daily at (http://www.newsfromtheedge.org) as a public service/hobby, they got me the registered domain name and hosted my site for almost nothing in aid of what I was doing. Likely I would have gotten this gift from Telus, Bell, AT&T or Rogers. Yeah. Likely. Support your small, independent ISP. They're the only thing that will save us.
The best news sites are, of course, on the Net and so are transnational with no censorship. For a good international site updated daily try , although common dreams, buzzflash and alternet are very good too.
All that's left of the packard bell 486 that I originally bought with windows 3.11 is the floppy. It now runs SuSe 8. and has been rebuilt numerous times. I sure hope that packard bell doesn't sue me for modifying it.
You folks just had a case, in that bastion of democracy called Florida I believe, where the proprietary system running the newly purchased voting machines couldn't be inspected to tell if the vote was tampered with or not. No problem with OSS. Then there is the ancient rumour of the back door key to MS products held by NASA that prompted the German government to say that they might as well just have the CIA collect their mail for them as use their products. No problem again with OSS.
Would any of you USians be happy if your Guv was using a Chinese closed source proprietary system to run your Guv business? I think not. So why should the Chinese trust MS? We don't.
Make it mandatory for all Guv business to be OSS. MS can always OS their OS if they want to compete.
I admire Rasterman's work and run enlightenment as my wm. His opinions on anything else are just that... his opinions.
We had better hope that his opinion on linux on the desktop is wrong however, as this is our only hope to keep knowledge freely available. The battle has been engaged and Microsoft and Mac are definitely on the dark side. The last available route to power for us ordinary folks is knowledge... wealth and force are becoming restricted to the oligarchy. If linux loses we are all in the soup and will remain there, simmering, for the next millenium. Make no mistake... this is a political battle, not an economic one. At the core of it lies our freedom or slavery. Geeks have the wherewithall to tip the balance in favour of freedom. All we have to do is organize. Information will free us and keep us free.
1812. The US attacked Canada and got the white house burned for their trouble. And may I add that the Pope was attacked and shot a number of years ago by Bulgarians. www.qcislands.net/peerless/
We have a TV society here in Queen Charlotte City, BC, Canada. Every year we vote on which channels we want to buy. Next meeting I will be agitating to ensure that we do NOT buy TBS. Kiss my ass TBS.
Lighten up, USians... this is great news for the rest of the world. Glad to see you folks are gonna bite the bullet and hoard all those great movies that Hollywodd churns out ad nauseum for yourselves. With your new copy protection the rest of us wopn't be able to watch them. I love it. Those brilliant folks in the US entertainment industry have done and are doing more to aid cultural industries in the rest of the world than either the Iron Curtain or the Great Wall of China. In the future if I want to watch one of Arnold's extravaganzas I'll have to cross the border.
Wait a minute... aren't they throwing visitors in the can down there and throwing away the key if they look suspicious? Maybe I'll just tune into CBC here at home.
Now if we can just get them to install this junk in the TV sets....
While they have it open it would be interesting to see how much of microsoft's "proprietary" code has been cut and pasted from other sources. I've always suspected that the most serious reason for microsoft to be so close with their code is that they've stolen much of it from other proprietary sources and the GPL, not to mention free bsd.
What WASN'T discussed inthe movie was the reason for the Somalis to go berserk... and the reason was... shortly before the helicopters were shot down the same helicopters had rocketed and machine gunned a house where Habib's tribal elders plus servants plus wives plus children plus grandchildren had assembled to discuss the US peace plan, resulting in the deaths of 90 unarmed civilians. Deliberate murder.
Were I a Somali you may be sure that I would have been in the streets that day to avenge my relatives.
US propaganda again spins an act of US murder into an heroic defense of demacracy.
A week ago I installed Mandrake 8.1 on the computer of a friend of mine and his wife. They are complete newbies as far as computers are concerned. After showing them where the browser and the mail program was and setting up their ISP account I turned them loose. They have been happily pointing and clicking with NO problems ever since. They agree that Linux is the best thing since the invention of beer.
Whovever says we're not ready for the desktop has their head stuck where the sun don't shine.
As large corporations rarely pay their fair share of taxes, why should they benefit from public money? As your humble os sofware writer pays his/her share then they SHOULD benefit. And so should the public at large.

It certainly looks like being this administration's mouthpiece is paying off for Murdoch

of Katz's rich fantasy life. However... when you're dreaming these gems up for us Katz, try to make it a little believable.
ergo... the Taliban was barely out of town when the dude and his friends were out in the chicken house digging up the floorboards...
Spare me. Most of the goddam HOUSES in Afghanistan don't have boards on the floor for chrissake.
Check out CNN agsin Katz... DESERT! ROCK! NO TREES! Sheesh! Geeks!
