I think this would be seen in a completely different light than a Game Genie. For a game genie to have those effects on a game, you would have to go to the store, buy a game genie, place it in your console, then place the cartridge onto the console, not exactly something that could happen without the end user knowing about it. However, with this, most users will have no idea that what they are seeing on the page isn't the original content intended by the authors of the page. It seems to me that the reason nintendo lost the game genie suit was because it was the customers actively going out and buying something to change the properties of the game, and not game genie sneaking into every house and installing a game genie without anyone's knowledge.

I won't argue that the gpl is viral, it's true, however, the gpl can't "infect" anything. Code doesn't get attacked by gpl commandoes and have gpl'd code inserted in it. It's just one open-source license of many, and no one is forcing anyone to start a project and license it under the GPL. If you don't like it, don't use it. It's as simple as that.

okay, I'll bite on your second trolling post of this thread.....

Any application that is running on Linux is utilizing the work of GPLd code, therefore should only GPLd code be legal to run on Linux? If you say no then tell me why: I'd love to hear the definition of what is acceptable use and what is not.

You can utilize GPL'd applications, you just can't directly link to it. This isn't a moral issue, it's a licensing issue, please don't make it more than it is.

This is the funniest irony of the GPL community: Somehow if someone uses GPLd code they have "stolen" it (despite the fact that their use of it in no way inhibits its freedom and accessibility), yet GPL fanatics will be the first to tell you that there is no such thing as Intellectual Property and that the etherial nature of code makes it free for the taking.

...more trolling, I'll bite again. If it wasn't for IP laws, we wouldn't need a GPL. Whether or not intellectual property is legitimate is not what is being discussed, the fact is we have intellectual property and licensing laws. Now, if i released my code under the BSD license, I wouldn't have any problem with a company taking and using my code, it's simply a license issue, if you don't like the license that code comes with, roll your own, don't whine and bitch about how you really want to use that code but the license it comes with is SOOOOO UNFAIR.

the rest of your post is so troll-like it's not worth my time. A little common sense would do you some good.

OK it seems the GPL'ed code is in .DLL form. OK, they can do that, link closed source code with a GPL'ed DLL, that's legal.

Actually, it isn't legal, you can not dynamically link (.so/.dll) to a GPL'd library from a closed source program, an LGPL'd library, yes, but just a GPL'd library, no.

Many people make the mistake of thinking nintendo -decided- to go with cartridges instead of cd's. While nintendo may want you to think that, the fact is that Nintendo was not allowed by a court order, in the case filed by sony, to make a CD based system until some time last year (1999). Yes Nintendo says "we use cartridges because of infinitecimal load times", but that's only because it sounds better to say that and have people disagree than to say "we weren't able to use CD's in the 64 because we screwed Sony over in our contract for the SNES cd system"

  24. Anomalous[sp?] Buchanan Votes on Statistics, Elections, Frustration · · Score: 1

Many people in both the media and on slashdot have been constantly bringing up the sharp difference between the votes buchanan got in Palm Beach county and votes he got in the rest of the state's counties. At first glance this seems to be a very strong argument, however a little more research shows that this argument holds very little, if any, water. The county of Palm Beach has 14,551 registered members of the reform party. Given that number, the 3500 or so votes receieved by Buchanan are not odd at all. Now if either candidate takes this to court, which Gore is quite likely to do if he loses, I'm buying the first plane ticket out of here, I do not want to be in a country where elections are overturned simply because one candidate found a friendly judge. Oh, and Gore's campaign manager is Florida's Attorney General yet will not recuse himself from the Florida Election Committee, like Jeb Bush has already done. I guess gore sees a chance to steal the election (literally)now that Bush stepped down to avoid any look of impropriety. On another related note, Florida's former Attorney General and the current Attorney General of the U.S., Janet Reno, is on her way down the Florida. I have absolutely no faith in this woman, she once arrested two men and ruined their lives for giving her evidence of democratic election fraud. She dragged them through the mud for 2 years, and the day before the trial, the day before her arguments would have to stand up in court, she dropped the charges. Her personal assistant was once caught falsifying absentee ballots. Yes, I have full faith and confidence in this woman to see to an honest election. One other thing the unwashed masses don't seem to understand, is that we are not a democracy, and for very good reason, we are a republic. This is done mainly to prevent mob rule by the majority from taking away all the rights of the minority. This was also a concession to the smaller states when the country was being formed. People seem to forget that the will of florida, california, new york, pennsylvania, michigan, wisconsin, minnesota, and texas, is not -supposed- to trump the will of 42 other states and DC. It must be remembered that during the time the constitution was made, there was great fear by the smaller states that they larger states would run over them, literally, there were fears that they would be invaded by a neighboring large state, of course this is back in the days when we were a true republic.
