That's right, in the world today, the only way not to be racist (or sexist, or homophobic) in movies, is to make sure all characters who aren't 100% completely without-a-doubt good, white (or male, or straight). Any other race (sex, orientation) for a character who isn't completely virtuous is racist (sexist, homophobic), and the intelligent public will see through this.

Boy, I'm glad we have such intelligence here on slashdot.

Your referrence to the american/soviet plane issue, seems to indicate that you are completely taken-aback by the fact that governments engage in propaganda. I can assure you that the Russian government/media was as apoplectic over the Americans shooting down the iranian plane as the americans were about the other. I can also assure you that the Russian media wasn't as harsh on the Russians for shooting down the korean plane. That's just the way the world works. Friends get protected, enemies get attacked, regardless, it's not right, but it's real. Pragmatism is more important to most people than Idealism.

I made that exact same transition, as my first installation was redhat, after a couple months, i just couldn't stand RH any more, then i moved to slack. Eventually when i had some hardware failures i decided to go with freebsd, that lasted about 8 hours, because i realized i couldn't get hardware accelerated openGL for my geforce2mx in freebsd. I'm not sure if this is still the case, hopefully it's not, as I would love to be able to use freebsd more, simply because i LOVE /usr/ports.

    > Or the groundbreaking Neon Genesis Evangelion?

the 'groundbreaking evangelion'? hah, while it was a good series for the first 3/4 of it, for some reason the series completely loses it's focus, or appears to, and moves from an interesting (and good) mech-like anime, to a really really crappy treatise on existence and the human condition. It would also have been nice if it would have had an ending.

On the whole though, I find that it's nice to be able to walk into more video/dvd stores now and be able to find some anime that at least might pique my interest, and even if none of it piques my interest, it's just kind of nice to see it there.

You simply misread. What's been on the local news around here is that the city will offer free email for all residents, and that many public computers will word processing programs installed onto them (MS Word I would assume), and those computers would be the same computers you always see people browsing the web on from the library.

  11. A serious problem on Stem Cell Patent Torpedoes Research · · Score: 2, Interesting

One of the most serious problems we have today with the patent office is this: the allowing of patenting of discoveries. Discoveries are not inventions, no one invented the stem cell, they simply found it. This is the same mindset that allows companies to patent parts of the human genetic code. I believe we have bigger issues to worry about with the patent office than software.
