I agree with your sentiments and I recently discovered a security flaw and I fear that if it is ever known that the type of counter measures that would be required would make the current silliness pale in comparison. It might help them to tighten up the security, but when did the lives of people who travel by plane become so important that it is necessary to spend millions to protect a few while many die for lack of proper disaster management. It is simply poor resource management and a vast over reaction. These security people must have a great lobbyist.
Great demonstration. I couldn't have -not- said it better myself. It is something that is true in other areas and the relation ship of two zeros does have an effect on the outcome == 8 or perhaps infinity.
The odd thing about this is that it doesn't apply to everybody. I have traveled for many different companies and I have learned who to contact. Surprisingly I have been at several borders where people have had their personal electronics confiscated while I am waved through with a trunk full. The people who make these laws travel with escort and arrangements in private planes and cars. It is more like economic feudalism than oppression. It is not sustainable, but neither was the British rule. I suppose it is a matter of when it becomes unbearable and that may be the gift we give to our children. No inconvenience upon others is too great for me to bear for my own protection. -- The king
It seems that if you wanted to change it's course by a continuous amount, that simply increasing it's mass by pushing other material into it's field would make the sun do the work. Just a random thought.
I am not sure that you can separate a person from their past that easily. This is not a simple person and the motives that drive Bill are likely to be well beyond characterization in simple terms. Much like everybody, they have their personal slant on life and I am sure that he curses open source. I think that if he really wanted to fix some problems, he could give his money to a proven winner like open source technology that benefits everybody. The goal of business is to make profit and that is not -always- the best thing for people in general.
The biggest problem is not that it might make it easier to enforce laws and protect rights of those who abide by the rules, it creeps to the point where a government can control dissent in the matters where they become corrupt and need to be disposed of. At the point when they have absolute control of the criminals, they have absolute control of those who might oppose a dictatorship or military coup. If you give somebody the right to stick their hand up your a** every time you go to the airport, don't be surprised what goes up there next.
I am pretty sure that I can go into debug and switch it in the code. I assume that would be considered committing a crime and so if I find the time to do that, I would post it anonymously. It seems that they could easily do that with the source and I agree with others that it does put their benchmark in a bad light.
mirv already exists and so does flack. You can't hit what you don't know is a target. There are always limits to energy per unit time per unit area and since we are already 10 trillion dollars in debt destroying things, perhaps that money would be better spent on a plan to grow some crops to eat.
I wonder if this software would detect a positive for suspicious activity if it observed a lobbyist for the firm entering the office of a congressman with a hooker and a briefcase. It would seem that it would select for people who fly into the radar and as a result the actual complex threats would be ignored.
I agree with that, I can't imagine sending something that far away and not testing it with every weird thing that you might find in a child's room like gum in hair, silly putty, slinkies, plastic peanuts, ice cream, cheese whiz, dry ice and on and on, It does seem a rather large oversight in testing. BTW the jokes were great and I assume that the article was somewhat of a setup for that. Now -that- is good planning, informative and easy jokes.
I have been using my own GPU to do this very same thing by automatically converting images to vertex format and use the GPU to scale, shade, etc and in this way I can have a shape recognition by simply measuring the closest match on the frame buffer. There are more complex ways to use the GPU to do pseudo computation in parallel, I still think that a commonly available CAM or near CAM would increase neural like computations by being essentially a completely parallel process. It would be better to allow more people to experiment with the methods because the greatest gain and cost is the software itself and specialized hardware for a single purpose allows better profit but limits innovation.
It is an interesting concept and if I have a mind controlled interface that links to a radio controlled helicopter then I could be search for weapons and none would be found, however I would still be able to call a helicopter strike on my assailant. Also, if I create a game program server and use the input from a radio controlled robot war machine and use that to create in world bot positions, then use the decisions of the players to wage war on anybody I choose without any effort or skill on my part.
Is the reason they hide it is to conceal the fact that it was originally open source code and they just copped it to use for this since they were not up to the task. Might sound conspiratorial but I have seen my work stolen to be incorporated into computers for the military and they even left my back doors in there. That is not some fantasy of mine. I have one of the battlefield computers with my code in it and it is because they went to mil. surplus and not destroyed like they were supposed to be. A military contractor can save money by stealing code from anybody and never worry about being sued for stealing it.
A person who does good deeds to increase their public image is called a politician or entertainer. I think that one of these two people is looking to be in a position to control everybody in a more global way than just software. I would have to have some kind of hard evidence to consider the possibility that grandma and the wolf had merged into a single kindly genetic organism. The more likely solution is that the wolf ate grandma. One of the nice things about free source is that I don't have to agree with anybody to be able to use the stuff.
I think that the lead in bullets is poisoning the land where too many people are being shot and more attention should be applied to having a bullet that doesn't use heavy metal./sarcasm
I think the lesson of the privacy of phone conversations is an example of what will happen. They will use the information first secretly and later pass a law to hold themselves harmless for doing so. It is strictly an issue of who controls life, me or someone I don't know. I trust my own motives. I would rather not spend 2 years in court trying to explain how someone stole my identity.
I agree on that, there are employees who like to do snooping too and it is the admin's job to know if they are doing it. If you don't understand how it is done, you can't stop it. I personally have worked in many situations where I have access to other people's personal information and it is a responsibility that you bear and when you run across something really icky, you have to consider what your level of trust will be with others if they know you did something about it. I have a very high threshold of what I would consider sharing. I repair a lot of people's systems and most people have no clue how much of what they do is kept in the computer. If an admin is digging around in stuff just for curiosities sake then they are probably not well focused on their job.
I have added fluorescent protein in the lab with e. Coli and it is very simple. There have been quite a few more unusual experiments that involve taking human brain cells and growing them in mice and adding human genes to animals. I think the door is already wide open as they can claim it is not human if it does not have 100% human genome. I wonder if this non human gene is in a human, then are they not human any more by this definition?
This is one area where I have worked a bit and there is tremendous potential for abuse of VMM and SMM when you combine it with users that trust a company to deliver binaries. I will not use a binary program, unless I have the source and can verify it is legitimate. A bit of social engineering and the right picture and an uninformed user will be flashing their BIOS while they wait for the security update they think they are getting. If it is done right, this type of program can remain dormant and use no CPU time to give itself away, until it is keyed to act in something like a bot net or some other purpose.
Isn't an indictment for a hate crime : 'likely to expose a person... to hatred or contempt'? Which states don't have this yet, you mean Russian states?

I could be a random resistance element that could be used as a random number seed. Or it could be the mythical room temperature non-conductor.

For some strange reason that is sadder than the failure itself that Scotty's ashes rode on a failure.

I guess it might be easier to get in to space on one of the Russian He3 mining ships to the moon.

They may have to develop a new recognition tool to blur things like that. Nice link.

I just came here to help support open source. The articles may not always be winners, but the tag lines and comments make up for that.
