Of course they don't get the same benefits. Contractors are mercenaries who go from job to job working for whatever company will pay them the most. Most contractors I know boast about how much more they get paid than full-time employees.

If they want the same benefits as the rest of the full time staff then they should show some loyalty for once and ask for a full time contract. The pay may be lower but I least they can wear the same colour badge.

It was mainly from when I was doing ISP phone support 5 years ago. The majority of calls were windows based and could be easily fix by editing a few files or reinstalling componants. If we got a mac call everyone used to shrug. Very little we could do apart from tell the customer to go back to the vendor.

  4. Re:Basic concept of news reporting on Photographer Fired For Digitally Altering Photo · · Score: 1, Interesting

A war photo that is altered so the depiction is inaccurate is unacceptable on any scale.

IAADP (I am a Digital Photographer) and I see nothing wrong with the photo. I quite often combine elements of different photographs from a shoot to create the image I'm looking for. Often it is an image I see through the lens and try to capture but just miss due to the subject moving. That doesn't mean that what the photo shows never took place.

Imagine trying to take a photograph of two people sitting on a bench. You take one photograph just as a bird flys past and blocks the face of the person on the right. You take a second photograph just as a bus drives past the person on the left. The two subjects then get up and leave before you have a chance of a third photo. Now if I took the left hand side of the first photo and the right hand side of the second photo I could create a new image of two people sitting on a bench. Just because I didn't capture it in one photo doesn't mean it didn't happen.

In this instance you can clearly see what was happening in the two individual photos. The soldier is telling people to move in the first photo and the second photo shows them moving. By combining the images he the photographer has been able to show all that is happening in one shot. This does not mean the photo is not a true representation of what the photographer saw.

  6. Good idea but not quite IMDB on An IMDb for Books · · Score: 5, Insightful

This is a good idea. I have often thought that IMDB is the best site on the internet since it was ran from Cardiff Uni (Despite the US-centric reporting and rampant commercialism on the frontpage).

The main think the IMDB has over a similar book site is the interconnectedness of movies. With actors often appearing in more than one movie, the IMDB is just as much a database for actors, crew, writers, producers and composers as it is for movies.

With books all you can really index are the titles and the authors - and crossovers are rare.
You could still list the characters appearing in a book but due to the majority being one of appearances it's usefulness is definately restricted.

No playing six degrees with books. and no thinking "I really like that character. What else have they been in?"

All in all it's a nice idea but I can't see it reaching the same level of usefullness of IMDB.

  10. Re:However... on Lupin III Coming to Hollywood · · Score: 3, Informative

Not based on an urban legend but actually based on truth.

The movie is based on a play by Alan Bennett called "The Madness of George III". The popular story in the UK is that the movie's title is different from that of the play because it was thought the American audience might mistake it for a sequel. While not wholly true, director Nicholas Hytner has confirmed that it was "not wholly untrue" and it is now widely held that this almost certainly did play a part in the titling of the film. In the UK it would be obvious to anyone that "George III" referred to King George III, but it was felt that elsewhere this might not be so clear and that adding "King" to the title might help. While this explains part of the title change, it glosses over the dropping of the "III", adding renewed weight to the original theory.

1988 The Last Temptaion of Christ beaten by Barry Levinson for Rain Man.
1980 Raging Bull beaten Robert Redford for Ordinary People.

  14. Re:overtime issues on Are Coders Exempt From California's Overtime Laws? · · Score: 3, Interesting

If you have need to work overtime then make sure it is logged and you claim for it.

If you are working overtime because the project needs to be finished, rather than because it needs to be done out-of-hours, log every hour you work, otherwise the situation deteriates into a vicious circle.

If a project is assigned 5 hours work and it takes 7 hours to finish, say it took 7 hours. If you say it took 5 hours and the client is billed for 5 hours it shows an unrealistic idea of how much work that can be done in a set time. Next time the client will want 14 hours worth of work done in 10 hours. And then the problem gets worse and worse. Eventually the programmers will be working 20 hours a day but only get paid for 8.

I've seen this happen at a company I used to work with. When I started everyone enjoyed working there and we used to go out for drinks every night. Six months later the programmers never came out anymore as they were working long hours for no overtime. Eventually a lot of them quit.

Check your contract. If it says you work 9-5 then work 9-5. Anything else they can pay for.
