Working on an ISP helpdesk years ago we used to ask for passwords all the time to test connections. We found that most of the users gave the password out before we even asked. The alternative was to reset the users password and force them to change it anyway.
Users would give you a lot less grief if you just used theirs. Dealing with users who wouldn't give you their password and then complain they had to change it were just a pain in the arse.
I agree that Games won't attract people to Linux but it would help keep them there.
I have installed Linux quite a few times on second partitions and started to get used to using it. But the reason I have carried on using Windows is so I can fire up any of the latest games.
Linux has all the applications I need and works well. Windows has all the applications I need and full game compatibility.
I found this feature a powerful addition to my software DVD program. I was able to shave about 5 minutes of each episode of Buffy by speeding it up. Over an entire series this cut the time it took to watch by 2 hours.
I disagree. As a learner car driver I find one of the hardest things is keeping track of the road, speedo and side mirrors at the same time. After moving my head it takes a few seconds to refocus on the road (probably not actually that long but feels like).
When looking in the rearview mirror I just flick my eyes and my attention immediately reverts back to the road. I'm sure I would find it a lot easier if information like speed/revs was shown on a HUD on the windscreen.
So videophones never materialised? So what's this in my pocket?
Video mobile phones are around and on sale in at least the UK and Australia. I've got the NEC e808 which is a bit big but does have a Qwerty keyboard. See www.three.co.uk for more info.
I don't mind the idea of paying tax. It's just the idea of paying tax when you earn it, paying tax when you spend it and paying tax when you even save it.
Why can't we just get taxed once.
But the most evil tax has to be inheritance tax. Even when you die you end up paying tax.
The government are happy to jail someone who sells a piece of kit that allows people to copy games, whilst trying to pass laws that protect gun manufacturers from being sued if their guns are used in a crime.
Nice to see some consistency and sense of perspective there.
Great idea. And when you're completely plastered all they club has to do is throw you out on the street.
Then the taxi drivers can pick you up, scan the implant for a home address and then charge you for the ride home without you having to be concious.
And I don't know the anonymous coward, but I imagine him to be fat, bald, pedantic, and egotistical. Basically, a /. reader.

Great!. Two of the top three selling non-RIAA albums are by Hanson.
That's really going to make me support non-RIAA music.
Who says piracy kills games systems.
I remember copying games for my ZX Spectrum and that's still going strong!
Oh wait...
Remake Casablanca? Philistines! The one starring Mary Binglebat and Peter Beardsly is definitive!

Windows wins.
On XP all this does is remove the shortcuts on the desktop and in the start menu. It doesn't actually uninstall the software.
Can you do this on Tivo?

I thought you were going to say it was the basis for the current US Government's homeland policies.
Wouldn't it have been easier to use the signals for "A" and "T" and call it the "at"?
Because most of us don't have 40GB of music. My modest collection (about 200 albums) still only takes up about 10GB.
$270 is a lot less then $480.
$7 is a lot cheaper than the 200/GB I recently paid for an IBM Microdrive or $700/GB for the pen drives you quoted.

Maybe Google will be worth using again.
If I search for a review of an item I just get 50 links to shopping portals. Kelkoo seems to be the worst offender for co.uk.
But if I actually want to buy something I end up with 50 pages or portals all linking to the same article on amazon.
It's about time Google should add a -shops filter to automatically filter out retail sites.

Which country are you talking about? Because it sure isn't the UK.
Even the comments are the same...
That's better than then Animatrix - which was released on DVD a few weeks after Matrix Reloaded came out in the UK.
Because we also pay Income tax.

All three LOTR films were filmed at the same time so they have a consistent look and feel about them.
Unlike the other patents this does actually look like an original idea.
If you have paid tax on cd-r's for compensation to the artists, are you then allowed to copy the works? What is the legal standpoint here?
Are there any other industries where the government makes you pay for the crimes of others?
of course, if you don't have their proprietary software, you're screwed...
Which they quite happily provide for free.
