Security cameras can be useful in preventing crime and generally make people feel a lot safer. The UK is supposed to have more survellance cameras than any other country and most of the time I don't even notice them.
But if you're on the back of an empty train trying to make out with your girlfriend they sure are damn intrusive.
And trying to find an alley in London that's out of public view and not covered by CCTV is nigh on impossible (without resorting to tresspass).
You do need permission in the UK but I don't know where from:-(
A few years ago my friend bought a model Rocket from Beatties (a toy shop). We went down to a local park which was deserted. Just as we were about to set it up for the third launch we were approached by a local Bobby who told us to stop immediately.
Just found [a href="http://www.gbnet.net/orgs/staar/legal.html"> this. It says there are no laws in the UK fro mpreventing this (except not doing it within 5 miles of an airport), but there may be many byelaws preventing it.
But if you stop buying the CDs they think it's because we prefer to pirate them instead. Then they try to pass more laws to prevent legitimate hardware and software usage.
They win either way.

This article was posted just a few hours after I ordered a new hard drive.
Fortunately I ordered Seagate's ST380021A Barracuda IV which came out pretty respectably. The main concern I had was noise (as my computer is next to my bed and I can't sleep with it on) and performance. I wasn't worried about heat too much as I don't overclock my compter.
When I want to check things like my balances, purchase equipment, etc, I LOVE THE INTERNET. It's quick, it's easy, and I can do EXACTLY what I want, when I want
So do I. But when it goes tits up I much prefer a human on the end of the phone promising that things will get sorted, rather than leaving a message on a machine.
Maybe this can be applied to a plug-in for IE. Then it can constantly refresh the frontpage of/. and try and get first post whilst I'm off hunting down pictures of Natalie Portman.
A good place to get multi-region DVD in the UK is Techtronics. They sell many different players and are even chipped to avoid RCE - even the Sony players! Sony are some of the only players that don't have remote control hacks.
And a good place to buy region 1 DVDs is Play 247 who's prices are cheaper then the high street.
About a third of my collection is Region 1 and I bought both Pitch Black and Resident Evil before they came out in cinema here. But that hasn't stopped me from going to see the films in cinema after I saw them on DVD, and I recently payed to see both Blade Runner and Aliens in the cinema - both films I own on DVD already.

How will the elevator be funded?
The elevator can be funded privately, publicly, or with a combination of the two.
If you read the article he only got done for 2 counts of copyright violations. He also got done for four counts of selling unauthorized computer equipment which I presume were the chips in question.
It's just like out of Only Forward. Soon we could be walking down the street and the walls could be colour co-ordinating with our clothes as we walk by. That would be so cool.
Well, it's a new definition for "dark ages", that's for sure.
I was under the impression that the defining characteristics of the dark ages was ignorance, suppression, warfare, famine, strife -- you know, BAD STUFF.
Actually, the Dark Ages are called that because there is very very little information about what happened in that period.
I saw this news last night on teletext. So far I haven't heard what sites have been blocked and it appears to be restricted to Italian sites only.
At least Landover Babtist is still up and running. Warning: This site is very funny.
And you can still get your Cradle of Filth T-shirts here.
Does that mean there will be a Sim Natalie Portman?
What would be interesting to see are maps produced from the data in the photographs.
It would be useful to see a map of the local city and find out just how much is covered by CCTV.

I would like a server that can survive a slashdotting.
I think Santa should give one to the people at Scientific American as well.

Normally it's the UK that has the highest prices in Europe.
But the period they were fined for was only 1991-1998. That still leaves the past 4 years to be accounted for.
But then again Gamecube games are still a lot cheaper than X-box and PS2 games if you know where to shop so maybe they have learnt their lesson.
It is when you answer it and start giving a running commentary to the person on the other end.
Try most of the people who may be in an office at work. Major news stories don't just wait until you are home to happen.

Now I read that it makes so much more sense.
I can see why the SF and BBC articles didn't include any extra information. You would need a fields medal just to understand it.

In other words "We don't know".
I would love a GUI similar to the one used in Minority Report.
An alternative would be a simple OS interface similar which uses radial menus like those in Never Winter Nights.

I thought that where the mp3s are put.
I actually liked the product placement in Minority Report. It actually gave some real life continuity to it.
It gave a feel that "this is the real world in the future" rather then "this is pure Sci-Fi".
Maybe it's time for the Canadian government to step in. I'm sure they will have a better claim on the name Canadiam than Molson.

And for the follow up article he discusses how hard it is for a site to remain up after it's been slashdotted.
