IBM kicked Sun in head by dropping support for DB2 on Solaris so maybe McNealy wants to find out what it feels like when Oracle kicks them in the stomach as well. Very few people in the enterprise world trust MySQL or PostgreSQL for anything other then web apps so this isn't going to win Sun any new business.
Oracle is an amazingly vindictive company, they will put the screws to Sun if they feel even slightly threatened. This is bad for Open Source because it just gives IT managers one more reason to replace Unix based systems with WinNT. Convincing your boss to move from Unix based commercial OS to Linux or BSD is a lot easier then trying to get Linux or BSD into a Windows shop. So in the end this will be bad for Open Source.
The company behind the technology is kind of lame, it's insanely expensive and it would be pretty slow however I doubt the government could do much to stop an Iridium phone with the data kit.
This is very cool, between this and bluetooth dun I might consider a 650 for my next pda however I'm not really comfortable giving my money to a compnay that seems to make handhelds for the cell companes needs not the users.
Find someone who works in film lighting, they deal with stuff like this all the time. It's been 10 years since I changed career's so unfortunately no product names are coming to mind but I remember when I was a film electrician we had special ballast for fluorescents that solved 90% of the type of problems you're talking about. You can also look into "hospital grade" florescent ballasts that are tested to make sure they don't interface with monitoring equipment.
From personal experience I can tell you that Japanese ballasts produce a lot less interference (they have to made in Japan not just made by a Japanese company). The Japanese moved to fluorescents a lot earlier then anyone else and the ballast made for the Japanese market are supposed cause less interference.
The Ramones. They're not programmers; they might not even know how to use a computer but they created the "Do It Yourself" mentality that is the driving force of free software.
What I'm going to suggest sounds so simple that most people have trouble believing me. My doctor gave me this advice 5 years ago, if you follow what I suggest ALL THE TIME your carpel tunnel will stop getting worse and in most cases your symptoms will go away.
Here's what my doctor suggested:
Stop playing fast paced computer games with your mouse; this will screw up your wrist more then anything else.
Write in big letters on your monitor (just above the screen)
"Monday morning: move keyboard, mouse and chair"
Monday mornings before you do anything else do exactly what the note says. Every week I angle my keyboard to the left or right slightly, move my chair up or down a few inches, and move my mouse to a new location, etc. The only problem is that you have to stick with it, even when your wrists don't hurt.
I always thought it would be kind of cool to have myself preserved (maybe by being incased in Lucite) with some artifacts from this era. I'd like to imagine archeologist thousands of years from now finding me and being able to learn something about the 20th/21st century.
The problem with books like the Protocols of Zion is that the more you discredit it the more the dimmer elements of society think "it's all part of the conspiracy".
If you want to check out a really good take on The Protocols of Zion and other conspiracy craziness pick up a copy of "Men In Black" By Scott Spencer (has nothing to do with a similarly titled movie of the same name).
The reason IT jobs are going overseas is that you can get cheep labor. Stay in the US get a low paying job in order to get some experance, then if you're good or easy to work with you'll be able to move on to somthing better.
If you're having trouble getting invterviews hire someone to rewrite your resume. If you're having trouble landing a job go on interviews for jobs you don't want until you feel comfortable. Temp agancies are good for practice interviews since they're always looking for people and are usualy run by assholes.
I bought a cheep Samsung 1210 a little over a year ago and it's worked like a charm. I have a it conected to a SMC barracade (with a bulit in print server) networked to 2 Windows and 2 Linux boxes.
I've been downsized and also worked as part of a team of consultants brought in to help a company outsource most of their IT needs so I think I can tell you a bit of what goes on when you see "the consultants" show up.
What a consulting firm is supposed to do (discover problem, suggest solutions) and what the consultants really do (stay for a long time, find ways hire friends) are two different things.
Even if the consultants are honest and full of good intentions you will most likely find yourself either having to justify your job or released from employment. Think about this from the consultant's point of view. "Who has the best solution to any problem? The guys I work and partner with! Who is a wildcard? The guys I don't know! Why that guy sitting next to the server room could destroy the whole company!"
Of course if the consultants aren't honest the situation is even worse.
When you see the consultants show up, don't panic. However don't ignore them either. This is the time when you get your resume updated and call friends with similar jobs "just to see if they heard of anything". Ask people you trust (who don't work with you) about recruiters they like. Compile a list of people who can help you if you find a new job fast.
The consultants might not effect you, but just in case view the situation as if your boss just told you that you have a 6 week warning before you're let go. Trust your gut (for lack of a better term) if you feel up against a wall then you probably are.
Now wait, do everything as you normally would. If the consultants leave and nothing happens you now have a updated resume (which you should have anyway). If you are let go, be pleasant thank everyone for the experience if you think you can get away with it ask for some kind of severance package (or if they could do better if you were offered one). Clean out your desk and never look back.
I realize this is not the "cool, connects to the internet, cost $30 but takes 4 months to build" solution favored by the/. crowd but the simple solution to your problem is to buy a bunch of Thermwell 12 Ft. Water Pipe Heat Cables then forget that this was ever a problem.
If you really think the RIAA is in the wrong, you should donate money to her family to pay off the settlement. If the money raised went over the 2,000 as I'm sure it would the remainder could be given to the EFF or put into some kind of fund for the girl. Image if just 5% of the/. Community donated $1.00. More important then the money it would send a clear message to the RIAA that suing minors is not in anyone's best interest.
From the little I know about law I know that every state in the US has different regulations regarding warranties. I live in New York State, if I buy a license I'd like to know what my rights would be regarding support and if I could take SCO to small claims court if they weren't willing to support their "product".
What would happen if thousands of Linux users did the same thing?
For the love god, what the hell is wrong with people.
Here's a suggestion for anyone who has thought about donating to this madness

Pick 3 or 4 distros and call their sales department. See what support package deals they're willing to make.

I just hope these "Homeland Security" guys never find out about New York City. They could shutdown all of Chinatown and most of the garment district.
When he did an in store apprearance in NYC he said he used vi or vim (I don't remember which) but NOT EMACS.

Wasn't this one of those comics that DC put out in the 70s based on characters they bought from bankrupt publishers?

Do the dishes still need to be the size of a car? Can you decrypt the signals? Just wondering.
If I can't get in I'll start my own friends network, but with gambling and hookers!!!
The problem is JACKASSES!!!!
