yeah. the chance that a mod would be clued enough to get THAT referance is a bout the same as one of the mods knowing about correct microphone placement technics.
"Speaking as an official Propellerhead _and_ a/. reader: The reason we acted on the reborn project (which wasn't open source I think - just a Linux product) wasn't that it was too close in UI design. It was because it was our UI - they used our graphics. We told them we didn't mind competition, but that they'd have to make their own UI instead of stealing our bitmaps. Apparently they didn't feel like doing that and blamed us for shutting them down, which we never did./tage widsell propellerhead software"
this conversation from linux-audio-dev confirms this.
"is it too much to ask that closed source, Windows-only software be labelled as such in the story?"
Thats a good point.
(and the mac version is MacOS9)
"but is slashdot going to put every piece of Windows-only closed source freeware on the front page?"
rebirth in the electronic music scene is somewhat akeen to Doom in the gaming scene - this perticular software had an enormous effect both from a user interface and technological aspect on the shape of the computer virtual instrument sceene that developped.

yeah the mods are definetly a cool aspect of the program, some of them are frickin amazing. my favorite (and actually the reason I actually got the software) was the Pitch Black mod that came with the software. who needs those pesky 808 and 909s..
the mod aspect of rebirth is probably the best (and only) good use of skinning that I've encountered over the years (or have a recollection of now) - unlike most other skinnable software that are only eyecandy and add nothing to the software - the "skins" rebirth have actually added real value to the software.
propellerhead software originaly released the rebirth ISO as a download from thier site last week. the responce was much bigger then they anticipated and by saturday they pulled the software from the server, and replaced it with torrents..
"Not only are x86 going to be the same to more expensive they are going to be constantly out of date. Apple sticks to a six month at least update schedule. And not only are there hardware problems, Apple hideous graphics drivers are going to remain since switching the CPU is not going to change the way they are developed by Apple."
you may be right about the chip prices, but concider that now apple does not have to design and build a chip set, for example. the upgrade cycle point is valid - but it remains to be seen what apple does about that - this policy may change for componant system upgrade (rather then architectural changes) - also remember it's likely that apple will use intel's chipsets now, instead of developing the whole architeture in house.
and don't forget.. do not underestimate Apple's industrial-design-fu which is more powerfull the any of it's competitors.
Mac on X86 comes out. a lot of mac users buy the new systems.
the mac X86s cost about the same as dell machines (since apple does not pay OS tax to MS and other third party software vendors like dell does) a lot of linux users buy macs to run linux.
power windows geeks buy these macs to run mac and win via dual boot.
second stage (2007):
virtualization software like vmware or wine are ported to osx on mac - windows users start to buy these systems and use win on top of mac osX. many ipod users that hav'nt made the switch now do.
high optimization type application developers who have not developed for mac befor now have no reason not too (games, video, cad) and cross develop for macs.
third stage (this might happen early or it might happen too late)- microsoft wakes up - makes a virtual PC+vista version that is targeted twards X86 mac systems running osX. if MS doesn't do this in an elegant way, wine supercides windoes and locks MS out of that game.
fourth stage (2010) by this time there is no reason not to run a mac rather then windows since 99%+ of the applications are nativly coded for mac osX, those that don't (legacy apps) run via virtualization - people use WIN virtualization apps less and less.
now apple systems cost LESS then PC systems since apple buys such a large ammount of chips from intel that they can get a much lower price for componants then all the pc companies, including dell (don't laugh, look at the mp3 market, same thing - apple gets better prices for flash componant) at this point dell starts to lose money - unless they do something drastic. ms gets most of it's revenue from selling mac software.. and ported.net dev tools on mac.
steve jobs leave the CEO and remains chairman - runs for california GOV, and wins. a week later he declars war on washington state.
at this point apple sells more computers then dell and all the other companies combined. apple becomes a bigger company then MS. infact apple becomes larger then any other company in history.
stage five: the DOJ hits apple with a second monopoly charge (they'll hit apple with an ipod monopoly charge sometime in the next two years..).
(though by the time this happens steve is alwredy US president, changes the US political system and becomes dictator)
stage six: ummm.. donno the crystal ball is pretty hazy now.
there are many reasons apple failed to rule the PC world, mostly that apple was directed by short sighted non-technical buisnessmen from 1985 to 1996 (i think amillio was not as bad as his forrunners, though) - the big problem with apple was that the managment was content to have a profit margin of 50% on it's computers rather then having any strategic future planning initiatives - this has REALLY changed with Jobs (for example having an internal team compile ALL the software for a non-shipping CPU architecture for five year, before even announcing a switch..)
as for exponential.. I remember that.. I think DEC bought the patent rights when exp liquidated - and then intel bought the manufactuaring and chip R&D from digital (before they were bought by compaq, which was bought by HP which.. oh well). in the end my guess intel got it. not sure if they used it though (though they might have).
putting that asside.. the 704 IIRC was a 601ppc varient - with very little on board cache and a pittifull FPU - not sure it had much chance against the G3's - and when it was announced it was somewhat vaporious.. you can't really tell when it would have been really avaliable.
"On the flipside, if Dashboard's popularity made the Yahoo deal happen (which, come on, it probably did), then Konfabulator probably just made out better than they'd ever imagined"
Yup. sometime getting copied in the software business is a GOOD thing. I, for one, never heard of konfabulator untill apple announced dashboard.
My guess is that The deal will be a manufacturing deal.
intel might make chips for apple, but I doubt they are going to be X86 chips. It's probably going to be a powerpc variant. I don't think apple can afford to get all thier developers to port everything to a differant platform. again. all thier users to change all the hardware, again. this would be the 4th major development-architectural shift in 20 years. mot68K to PPC macos to OSX and now a move to X86?! no freaking way.
what will apple get out of this?
virtually Unlimited chip production - no more production hickups like there were with motorola and IBM. no more relience on IBM (who are more focused of microsoft+sony's gaming platforms) and cheaper prices for chips.
what will intel get out of this move?
experiance in the powerPC architecture, needed since MS moves into ppc usage maybe a way for a future x-box design win? apple as a client. maybe an inroad to apple's ipod architecture (the portalplayer chip is an arm varient, aswell as dec's strongar.. sorry, intel's Xscale.)
if you don't know what is a Tim Berners-Lee, you are on the wrong medium.
yeah. the chance that a mod would be clued enough to get THAT referance is a bout the same as one of the mods knowing about correct microphone placement technics.

develop ReClark. that might work.

the perant poster is wrong on OH so many levels...
the meaning of the announcemnt is that propellerheads have discontinued rebirth developemnt sales and support, and now are giving it for free.
the refill for reason is another differant thing entirly.. and it's not really free at all.. it's free if you paid 400$ for reason and registered..

and yes, it looks like ijet.
don't laugh...
Apple is actually selling liquid-cooled hardware (high end G5 systems).
Might be interesting to see if they try use that technology on the future intel based workstations...
they would use these as midi controllers, natrully.
it's that new patch to the linux kernel that states, in a kernel panic: "I think you ought to know I'm fealing very depressed".
an example of Malicious (to microsft) FSS code:
Firefox.
haha. your being sarcastic, right?

"for at least three years after the first Intel Mac ships (probably four) a tiny subset of the Mac market?"
I think you are REALLY misstaken with this prediction.
you assume, for some odd reason that the market for those intel macs will remain the 5%..
will apple announces a rather odd strategy shift on monday?

we'll see.
most of the article is spoilers.
basicly: it's very dark. not much fluff - a lot of evil - kevin loved it.
This personaly annoys me and I hear that argument a lot. it plain wrong.
it's very simple:
the mellotron did not record sound - therefor it was not a sampler.
a sampler records sounds, or at least allows the user to use his own samples.
the mellotron is not a sampler in the same sense as the korg M1, Roland D50 and all other rom based wave-table synths are not samplers.
arrgh!
ah, yes..
they probably don't think that was a failier, since they, probably, run thier postnuke on one.
you should be warned.
reread the post. the name "macintosh" is mentuned there..
well..
since he did make the best documentry I ever saw about the birth of the PC industry, I'd say he did do something. and he knows something to.
but that's just my opinion.
