    Actually, there already are provisions for this.
    The SRV record, defined in rfc2782, is used to store a HOST:PORT pair

    When will browsers (or anything else for that matter) start supporting this???

    Here is a (possibly outdated) list of software that supports the SRV record.

    Sounds like you needed to modify your pre-sales techniques.

    Did your store only help people with gear bought from you? I doubt it.

    You should have given the information - to a point - other wise they start to feel they are "experts" and can do it all themselves.

    A person gets a used car. Goes to a mechanic. Talks about the problems. gets a quote. does the work themselves and it doesn't work. comes in for help. the repair of the repair will most likely cost more.
    Why?
    Because the mechanic must now clean up the problems that the owner did to their gear.

    Same for most other "mechanic" businesses.

    Be honest and upfront. Fix their problem. Tell them why it costs more from you than from wallmart or dell.

    The components can come from anywhere. They are not buying only components. They are buying reputation too.

    This technology, coupled with MAC address filtering could easily allow a store to restrict the users of their free access point to users within the store.

    So much for bringing your own food from home and parking outside the coffee shop for free wireless.

    My folks have a cabin in Maine with 100acres.
    Solar Electric for lights.
    Generator in summer to assist in refrigeration.

    However - the big money question - Internet access. I suppose if you are being paid well enough you could use a CellPhone. You better check cell coverage in your area.

    And I DONT mean by using their maps.
    They are a bogus marketing tool and not acurate worth a damn. Get the phone you will be using and survey the property.

    maybe the DVD made it look like crap.
    But that was what I saw... crap.
    They could have spent twice the time on the render and had it look at least twice as good.

    The fight scene with the kagillion AgentSmiths looked like a poor version of HalfLife.
    They were choppy, expressionless, flat images.

    I expected to see something like the first Matrix Movie. I guess that is the curse of success. They made the first movie too well forcing the next two to suck.

    However LotR may have broken that curse...

    You are telling me that a word macro that sends email would need to be written completely differently for the two versions of MSword?

    Are the two platform releases that different in their internal to the document maco capabilities?

    Did microsoft suddenly decide that since they were porting applications to a MAC that they should make them more secure than their more often used counterparts?

    Did microsoft also decide that they would stop undermining any threat to their monopoly? ( last I looked any UNIX that can run microsoft like products was a threat to them.)

    Their past actions *ARE* and indication of potential future performance. They must make me feel safe and by all accounts they have not.

    Thus, MAC+MS=bad mac.

    I therefore am looking for software - like the old FreeAltaVista client - that can be used for a WiFi link.

    If I research potential customers and send them an email to sell my services, am I a spammer?

    I claim that mass mailings would be spam however if I have taken the time to hunt down contact information for potential customers sending them my marketing information via published contact addresses (Phone, Post or Email) should all be viable methods.

    It is of course understood that the majority of spammers are based outside Europe. In fact, it is thought that the majority of serious commercial spammers are based in an area of the US called Boca Raton, in a few square miles and it is not common for UK business to contravene the expectations of common practice.

    Who would have thought we could just block BocaRaton. Also, looks like if I have a contest and tell people that register that they get additional entries for people that they refer - they are now breaking the law by spamming their friends.

    In my town we "conect the dots" to mark our selections on a paper ballot.

    That ballot is inserted into a machine that electronicly counts the votes and stores the physical ballot in a locked box.

    Done.

    Paper trail is present, no "hanging chads".
    simple elegent. and easier to complete than filling in your name on the SATs (those Damn bubbles ...)

    I agree with you.

    Unfortunately, it seems that these companies are hell bent on killing each other rather than on bettering themselves (which would accomplish the same goal and at the same time make the worls a better place for many).

    You all do realize that Microsoft is having the last laugh do you not?

    They are sitting back, proclaiming that OSS is dead and meanwhile the "big gins" are fighting amongst themselves.

    While attentions are diverted from Microsoft they are rebuilding. Once the dust of the present war ends Microsoft will step in, fully rested, and pick up where it left off however they will be fighting a tired and battle weary enemy.

    Divide and comquor.

    It strikes me that if the government, who wants this utility, would help fund a commercial entity to build it, they could contract to get the end result at a discount thus saving money over the long haul.

    At the same time they would be promoting a new company and potentially many more new companies that would spring up to make use of this network.
