As demonstrated by simulated attacks on U.S. carrier fleets, swarm warfare is extremely effective against centralized, non swarm warfare. This is similar to the introduction of Blitzkrieg versus trench warfare.

The next war will include now-impossible sounding numbers of algorithm driven small vehicles.

Events such as the Super Bowl are particularly vulnerable, and despite the privacy and liberty intrusion, I lean to the FBI stance, in this instance.

I used to keep my cell phone in the only sane location I could think of, the front left pocket of my jeans. However, as the width of these phones has increased, this location became less tenable.

I've adopted the butt phone placement and broken a phone screen because of it. But I don't think I can go back, until we start having smaller screens again, or a technological feat that obviates this need.

Light comes in units of photons. Saying, "just a little bigger than a single photon," doesn't make sense. Was it two photons? Is this an artifact of averaging and poor journalism, where the target was really 1 photon, and sometimes more are released?

Both the plastic and system are being carried by the current. However, wind and waves propel only the system, as the floater sits just above the water surface, while the plastic is primarily just beneath it. The system thus moves faster than the plastic, allowing the plastic to be captured.

The system consists of a 600-meter-long floater that sits at the surface of the water and a tapered 3-meter-deep skirt attached below. The floater provides buoyancy to the system and prevents plastic from flowing over it, while the skirt stops debris from escaping underneath.

Manufacturing is a helluva lot more than assembling widgets.

Manufacturing requires a support apparatus of shipping, accountants, lawyers, fast foot joints to feed the workers, etc.

Loss of manufacturing means loss of these jobs. Further, industry follows industry. As an example -

The solvents manufacturer I worked for employed hundreds of engineers, scientists and other technical folk. Many of these jobs are now overseas, because of this network effect. Production of goods that used our solvents as raw materials migrated to Asia, and our customers demanded the cost savings associated with local production.
